In recent years there’s been an exchange of ideas between the sibling styles of techno and D&B. This week we’ve spotlighted 14 tracks by artists (many of them former D&B producers and rehabilitated junglists) who’ve applied mid-late ’90s D&B/Jungle structures, dynamics and production touches to the 125-135 bpm bracket with much success. Working under various pseudonyms, we find the likes of Velvit (dBridge) forging the hard-stepping techno of ‘The Act’ and Trevino (Marcus Intalex) joining the dots between Reese, Berghain and darker D&B rollige on ‘Doldrums’. There’s a noticeable seam of Bristol producers transposing the momentum and vibe of D&B and Jungle into house and techno tempo, too, just listen to Pev’s mighty roller, ‘Aztec Chant’ or the moody Metalheadz vibes of Hodge’s ‘Resolve’ for proof. And there’s those relative outsiders such as Italian techno producer Alan Backdrop, whose minimal, roiling ‘Honok’ picks up from where D&B-fiends, Monolake and T++ left off, or the stepping dub B-line and Source Direct-like atmosphere of Lee Gamble’s remix for former D&B type, Cosmin TRG, and South London Ordnance’s clinical, streamlined rollige on ‘Floating World’. In some respects it’s a continuation of the Autonomic aesthetic; in others it’s symptomatic of new producers attempting to toy with and loosen the strictures of house and techno. Either way, they’ve got us dancing.

Over the past five years, Ricardo Donoso has continually sharpened his vision and craft into a diamond point. Beginning with Progress Chance then into Assimilating the Shadow, and now As Iron Sharpens Iron, One Verse Sharpens Another, Donoso has pushed further and further into grid-like, trance-infused tracks. This new offering simultaneously closes the cycle Progress Chance began with perfection, and blows the possibilities for the future wide open. Split over two parts, As Iron Sharpens Iron, One Verse Sharpens Another is a treatise on duality and Donoso’s strongest statement to date.

Pressed on separate 45 RPM 12″ records, this album most heavily embraces the dancefloor undercurrents that past efforts only hinted at. Donoso’s ability to juggle multiple rhythms and plot them all together cohesively is in top form. As his darkest work to date, it’s hard to still consider this ‘morning music’ even if vague similarities still exist. With each subsequent album, he has further explored connections between the external and internal self. Ideas shrouded in shadow on the first two records finally become poignantly clear. In the end, everything here is uniquely his own.

Opener “Affirmation” creates the link to Assimilating the Shadow while still pulling the listener deeper into the darkened pyramid that Iron/Verse occupies. Donoso’s composition and production techniques have grown immensely since Progress Chance, and the pacing over the course of these 12″s is impeccable. Bleeding into “The Sphinx,” the focus is further dialed in. As the geometry that’s graced the covers of each album has become more acute, so has the music contained therein. “Diagonal Environment” is a nonstop pummeling of heady bass sequences and subtle leads while the “The Old Straight Track” mixes elements of blackened dub and burnt-out goa into something new and addictive. It’s as if Donoso is continually rubbing off the dullness and ambiguity of past efforts to create something sharper and more refined.

Ricardo Donoso has led listeners on an incredible journey through the sunkissed, post-rave morning in Rio through the black shadows of the pysche. With As Iron Sharpens Iron, One Verse Sharpens Another that entrancement ends. Next time the limits will be destroyed.

Active since the mid-’60s, Alvin Curran is one of America’s most courageous and outrageous musical mavericks. A true forefather to the Downtown scene, his music embraces the dialectics of composition/improvisation, tonality/atonality, minimalism/maximalism, electronic/acoustic and more. Alvin’s use of the Shofar in experimental music making goes as far back as 1988, and this long awaited release features several compositions for Shofar and electronics, ranging from meditative Ambient environments to flamboyant, fast moving collage.

Killer EBM/darkwave collab between NYC/Chicago’s 51717 and Svengalisghost for Ron Morelli’s L.I.E.S. Trust in Pain finds the duo side-stepping the dancefloor to a gloomier, more psychedelic headspace perhaps best consumed in dank basements and dingy bedsits. The combination of Lili Schulder aka 51717’s breathy incantations and Marquis Cooper’s slow-moving, sinuous sonic architectures hark back to classic SPK and Chris & Cosey as much as they remind us of recent exploits from HTRK or even Heinrich Mueller and co’s Zwishenwelt project—a magic union of seductive groove and atmospheric sensuality that begs us to crawl back into its blackened womb. Highly recommended!

Secret Boyfriend is the solo project of North Carolina’s Ryan Martin, who is also one half of Boyzone (not that Boyzone, unfortunately) and founder of the Hot Releases label – a catholic endeavour that has seen him release records from the cream of the contemporary N.C. underground as well as reissuing classic sides by the likes of Maurizio Bianchi, Ghedalia Tazartes and Ashrae Fax.

To date, Secret Boyfriend’s presence has been felt largely in the shape of live performances and short-run cassette releases (including Carved At Birth, Furnishing The Void and Skin On The Clock), as well as vinyl splits with Russian Tsarlag and Horaflora. This Is Always Where You’ve Lived is SB’s first LP release and unquestionably his most potent, fully realised work to date.

Twelve songs from under the floorboards: a heart-rending but hard-edged synthesis of downer folk, tape experiments, noise etudes and basement-mildewed pop for edgeland fuck-ups, loners and wanderers; recommended if you like Peter Jeffries, Flaming Tunes, Storm Bugs, etc. Arguably comes closer than any previous BEB release to articulating the “mesmerised suburban daydreams of our youth”.

After releasing two highly acclaimed remix 12″s earlier this year, Red Stars Over Tokyo now delivers the hauntingly beautiful Melody Attack album. A double gatefold, mastered to subtle perfection by Dubplates & Mastering in Berlin, RSOT delves even further into his own unique mix of the subtly trancey, emotionally driven and understated forward motion of his previous productions. As always, his tracks have an undeniable song quality, the emotions within referencing the small and mundane, whilst the inspiration behind often references a so-called bigger picture. The whole album fades in and out of focus and attention, giving its different parts room to breathe and develop. Somewhere in there, there’s a a downsized cover version of Fra Lippo Lippi’s song ‘Sense of Doubt’—its stylistic minimalism a perfect counterpart to RSOT’s ambitions. ‘Melody Attack’ is RSOT’s own dark, elegiac version of what, for sake of simplicity, could be called 90’s IDM or Ambient Techno. His is an appealing darkness that does not forbid the sun to shine through. Its sense of isolation is filled with compassion for the one isolated. This is post-dancefloor music for post-dancefloor use. An ambitious, purposely ambiguous musical stream of consciousness that never cuts ties with its past, but offers a new and intricately organized perspective that makes it modern to a tee.

The dub techno artist goes off-piste.

Rod Modell is an artist very firmly associated with a particular style, namely dub techno. Since the late ’90s, the Detroit native has mined this murky and atmospheric sound, whether on his own or with Steven Hitchell as Echospace and cv313. Though clearly inspired by Basic Channel and its related projects, Modell has always been committed to moving beyond dub techno’s old testament, creating something fresh and modern with each new release. These days Modell is moving faster than ever before. He splits his time between Amsterdam and Detroit, and seems completely uninterested in the past, especially when it comes to his own music. Deepchord’s latest album, the almost beatless 20 Electrostatic Soundfields, is his most experimental yet.

On RA.390 we see him at his most unhinged, weaving a strange and dreamlike bricolage that’s at once completely new and unmistakably Deepchord.

What have you been up to recently?

Just back to Michigan from Amsterdam. Will be here for a few months, then back to Holland after the holidays. For the past three to four years I’ve been splitting my time between Amsterdam and Michigan. In the studio lately I’ve been more obsessed with sound design in lieu of making songs. The sound design aspect seems more important at the moment. I think sound design in electronic music is 25 years behind. Everyone’s obsession with old analog synths is perpetuating this. Instead of focusing on up-to-date options, everyone is hoping for yet another incarnation of classic gear from the 1970s synthesizer graveyard. It’s retarding music.

How and where was the mix recorded?

Recorded in Michigan with a pair of DJ CD players, DJ mixer and outboard filters / FX.

Can you tell us about the idea behind the mix?

Lately, I find myself drifting farther and farther away from techno / dub music in favor of the stuff I liked 15 years ago. I haven’t bought a techno record in three years. Around my home, I listen to old 1940s/50s music and field recordings. Electronic music overall seems to be stagnating. I can’t remember the last truly innovative record that I’ve heard. Naturally there may be a few exceptions, but they are (too) few and far between. This mix was done in the midst of rediscovering a few boxes of old CDs that I packed away several years ago. They were boxed up when I moved from my last home to the current one (and I’ve been here for about nine years). Wasn’t anything pre­contrived, just my top tunes for the moment. Since rediscovering some of these old favorites, it’s becoming difficult to return to the current glut of mediocre, formulaic grid music.

You said that your latest album is full of quick “audio sculptures.” Could you expand on this?

The music on 20 Electrostatic Soundfields was never made with the intention of having it released. Over the years, I found myself dabbling in video a little, and I made music for these video experiments. This is the music on 20 Electrostatic Soundfields. It’s a collection of soundtracks. Generally, they were assembled quickly to fit the video. The dance floor was never a consideration. They are sound designs to infuse the visuals with a particular intended emotional vibe. They feel organic because they are primarily un­sequenced. It was liberating to sit in a room with an ultra-basic setup—pair of studio monitors, keyboard, looper, FX unit—and record into a two­track recorder (Alesis Masterlink). No computer. No multitracking. Total flow-of-consciousness style without over­thinking or overdubs. Come up with an idea in my head, practice playing it a few times, then press record and do it for real. Much of 20 Electrostatic was done like this.

The picture disc version of the album features some of your photography. What sort of things do you tend to focus on?

My primary goal with photography is to record a certain space that I like so that I can go back there anytime I want. I’ve done this since I got my first camera at age five. I hate photographing people or objects. I guess I’m more of a landscape photographer, but not of pretty / pastoral scenes. I’d rather capture dirtier, unusual, or metaphysically­charged places at 3 AM. Night seems to be a recurring thread in my photography. I rarely photograph during the day. I like the places where tourists rarely venture. I feel most comfortable / relaxed in these places. The tourist areas are generally staged for show and not a true representation of a place’s real vibe. Like a movie set. The new picture disc features the Amsterdam red light district (near my apartment) on one side, and the beach next to my house in Michigan on the other. Basically the two places where most of my friends reside, and where I feel most comfortable.

What are you up to next?

Trying to come up with an interesting perspective for new music. I never want to revisit something I’ve already done. It’s pointless and gets an artist stuck in a rut. The whole objective is to progress and develop. It would be easy to make another Coldest Season or Lumin (etc) over and over. No challenge in that. I think it’s vital to develop a new algorithm. Every second spent working with an old formula is a second wasted. I recently disconnected my studio and stored some main / favorite pieces, then reassembled things with some old equipment that I feel less comfortable with. We’ll see how this affects things. I’m trying to break from the familiar, get out of my comfort zone, and make new music that sounds nothing like Deepchord or Echospace.

TRANSFER is a collection of poetry guitar music pieces originally released as a series of four seven inch singles based around the themes of transportation and transition; side A constructed from real or factual information and material, side B from fiction and fantasy. Themes were taken more or less directly from news items or literature and film history, from Jules Verne’s “Around the World in 80 Days”, the death of princess Diana and Grace Kelly, major plane crashes throughout history, Leonardo da Vinci’s musings on aerodynamics, to Agatha Christies “Murder on the Orient Express”.
Andy Moor and Anne-James Chaton first began performing together in 2004 when Chaton joined the Ex onstage to perform one of their songs. They later started to collaborate as a duo, building the music and text for one of Chaton’s portrait series; the journalist which later resulted in their first CD “Le Journaliste”, also released with Unsounds. Since then Moor and Chaton have toured widely in Europe, Canada and Japan, always building, reconstructing and adjusting their set and performance using improvisation as a creative source. In more recent months they have included video projections to the performances. They combine guitar riffs and loops, abstract noise, live sampling, dark beats and the unmistakable voice of Chaton, very present and rhythmic.
