Bank holiday carnival; we see ya! As tradition demands, we’ve rounded up some proper sound-system fiyah, rampin’ hottest Soca, Grime, Kuduro, Azonto, Kwaito, and the maddest riddims in between. From the inimitable South African twyst of Tshepang “Rambo” Ramoba’s remix for Penny Penny to the breakneck momentum of Mr One Hundred’s soca steamroller, the ‘HOW Riddim’, we bend slow to the Lisbon ghetto sound of DJ B Boy and Auntie Flo, go Azonto with Kush Arora & MC Zulu, bubble fast ‘n wicked with DJ Marfox and Strategy, and keep it UK with mutant strains of R&G, Bassline and jungle from Bok Bok, DJ Q & Flava D, Champion and Killjoy. Whatever you do this weekend folks, make some time for a wine.

We kick off our 2014 survey with 14 crucial mutations that twyst the lines of grime, trance and footwork to nexx level results. Lars T C F Holdhus proved to be one of this year’s most exciting, intriguing artists, and fronts this selection with the cryptography-inspired, gyroscopic post-hardstyle sweep of ’54 C6 …’ beside DJ B.Boy’s slo-mo bullet from Lisbon, ‘Moh Cota’ and a couple of other Latinate zingers from the brilliant NMO and Arca. Lorenzo Senni also made our year with his stunning ‘Superimpositions’ LP, from which we’ve included ‘PointillisticT’, alongside Matthewdavid’s heady soul spinner ‘In My World’. It was a vintage annum for instrumental grime, epitomised in Mumdance’s ridiculous ‘Don’t Get Lemon’ construction with Spyro for Rinse, and equally with Bloom’s shocking ‘Cld Grip’ or the staggered grime-techno of Air Max ’97. From Chicago, DJ Rashad (R.I.P) and DJ Earl’s footwork productions for Hyperdub knocked us sideways, and the uniquely incisive rhythm deconstructions of Ueno Masaaki, Gábor Lázár and Fis offer sharply contrasting, new rhythm solutions. Join us for part two next week where we’ll focus on other stylistic areas of excellence released over the last twelve months.

“14 tracks: e-grime:emirg-e”
Throughout 2014, the hyper-reflective electronic surfaces of instrumental grime have emerged as one of the year’s defining sounds. From the “weightless” projections of Mumdance, Logos and co, to the iridescent prisms of Visionist, Shriekin, Cyphr and Moleskin, via retro-futurisms from Filter Dread, Slackk and JT The Goon, the scene has never been more open-minded, quick-moving or eager. This selection, whilst by no means comprehensive – there’s obviously glaring omissions from the likes of Murlo, Kahn & Neek, Finn, to name a few – draws for those moodier, stranger, forward cuts that resonate with our tastes, stretching from the unconventional arrangements of Filter Dread to the darkside pressure of Ziro’s ‘Lost’ featuring Trim, taking in the stark, spectral geometries of Wen & Parris’ ‘Collide’ and Lukid’s ‘La Cucaracha’ alongside the exquisitely sharp sound designs of Her Records’, CYPHR, and JT The Goon’s dynamic sino-grime tang.

1. KAREEM : Ligeria (6:11)
2. CUB : CU – 1 (Original Mix) (6:43)
3. FISHERMEN : Black Haze (6:52)
4. SHIFTED : Burning Tyres (7:58)

13. TOLOUSE LOW TRAX : Vineland (6:46)
14. TAKAHIRO MUKAI : #122309 (4:40)

This week we scan slower strains of techno all working at sub 120bpm. All tracks are sequenced in roughly descending order on the tempo scale, plunging from the pendulous ‘Ligeria’ off Kareem’s sick new Zhark 12″ right down to the half-speed bounce of Takahiro Mukai’s mutant ‘#122309’ for Where To Now?. In between, you’ll find some of our favourite techno trax of recent years, fathoming CUB’s roiling killller ‘CU – 1’ and Fisherman’s stormy epic ‘Black Haze’ – available here as an exclusive download – plus the room-razing Silent Servant remix of ‘Ooze’ on Diagonal Records. Deeper down, there’s the furtive ‘Fear and Desire’ from Hamburg’s Yør, and the thrumming, wavey gait of Cliff Lothar’s ‘Ringleader’ and Peder Mannerfelt’s dry heaver. Berlin’s Positive Centre follows suit with the slow-style surge, ‘Field Of Tongues’ beside Millie & Andrea’s glaring ‘Back Down’ and the blinding intensity of ‘Low Jack’s ‘Flashes’, before we take it really slow with Chris Carter’s psychedelic remix of SLO and Tolouse Low Trax’s grinding ‘Vineland’. It’s not a new idea, doing sh*t slower, but these guys have really forged something unique and effective by inverting dancefloor perceptions and decelerating to darker, unusual spaces.

**Stunning new album from Milanese accelerationist Lorenzo Senni. Mastered by Giuseppe Ielasi** We’re more than a bit gassed to pop the cork on Lorenzo Senni’s thrilling, incisive new LP, the 10th release for Boomkat Editions. The conceptual sibling to his blinding ‘Quantum Jelly’ side for Editions Mego in 2012, ‘Superimpositions’ finds the Milan-based multi-disciplinary artist and owner of the brilliant Presto!? Records accelerating and evolving his idea of “Pointillistic Trance” – an ascetic, extreme approach to the aesthetics of ’90s-style trance/hard-trance – in a broader range of song structures, hyper-lucid moiré patterns, and tantric dancefloor arrangements. Again, he “plays” a computer-controlled JP8000 Roland Digital-Analog Modelled S-Source Synthesiser to juice the most potent, searing saw wave arpeggios and spiralling melodies, finding the biting point between real-time, hands-on, emotive human input, and the sleek tension of synthesis. From the serotonin-flooding rush of opener ‘Happic’ to the beautiful come down of ‘PointillistiC’, the album plays out a sisyphean struggle for deferred gratification, challenging limbic systems and our sense of equilibrioception thru the spine-tingling aerobic coefficients of ‘Elegant, And Never Tiring’ and the scything, strobing rhythmelody of the title track, to peak with the palpitating surge of ‘Forever Headline’ at its white hot core. It’s all more effective than a triple-barelled mitsi in the jacksy, and hasn’t been off our turntable all summer…

12. Fay – Coda ( 3:41)
13. Georgia – A Loving Grit ( 7:43)
14. Hands – Beelitz Heilstaetten, Pt. 11 (13:07)

Here’s a selection primed for long summer evenings, covering a spectrum of sticky, trippy pop and spaced-out dance music. They range from avant-pop diamonds by Islaja and Maria Minerva to sweeter soul mutations by London’s Throwing Shade and Fatima, thru breezy drum machine sways by Max Mara, Suzanne Kraft, and Noleian Reusse. There’s deepest house deviations by Heatsick, Kassem Mosse and Maxmillion Dunbar, and unusual ambient and dub excursions by Kyle Hall and Axel Willner’s (The Field) new project, Hands, plus off-road riddims from FAY and Georgia, all adding up to a dusky soundtrack ideal for those hours when hot days turn into hot nights.

13. Basic House – C Beat ( 9:59)
14. Mr Maxted – The Scale Of Things (11:40)

Trampling boundaries between Noise, Techno, Punk and the Avant-Garde, the unruly mongrels of this selection de-construct sonic perimeters much like their original No Wave counterparts of the late ’70s/early ’80s. They inject an atonal, repetitive vitality into well-worn templates and run amok with convention, forging genuinely new sounds and styles in the process. Some of them are old enough to know better, while younger operators strive for new forms, but they all share a taste for the messy thrills of new sonic alloys in formation. It’s a genre-not-genre, taking in Russell Haswell’s spattered ‘Scratchy (Freeze Dub)’ alongside the tetchy drums and electronics of Powell, S. English and N.M.O., the locked-in drum machine and synth rituals of Delroy Edwards, DJ Bookworms or Burial Hex, and the roiling technoid deviations of Lust For Youth, Regis, Basic House and Ron Morelli.

*Edition of 300 copies pressed on coloured vinyl, mastered and cut by Matt Colton* With only one release to her name so far, the excellent “Orz” tape for the Reckno label, plus a regular show on NTS, the producer who may or not be a pseudonym for visual artist Jason Kerley returns here with her first release pressed to wax, a 30-minute odyssey that glides into the hardcore continuum and re-shapes various forms and formulations of electronic music along the way. “sssssssss” is a 30 minute trip split into two continuous sides that run like a mixtape, coming to life on the frazzled low-end modulation “Fingerbang”, through the fractured, minimized UKG overhaul “Swoon”, the delicate, micrsocopic electronics of “Sex Smell” and the growling mentasm Grime of “No Liquid”. We can’t think of many records we’ve had through our doors that borrow as much from the UK techno/Artificial Inteligence espoused by the likes of the early 90’s Likemind label as they do from the frequency fuckery of Evol and Playstation engineered Grime and Garage – but Skyler manages it effortlessly. The standout moment of the album comes with “Langwellig”, conjuring the spirit of early rave with the barest ingredients, lost in a haze of ferric smoke that feeds into the next transition on this forever-shifting trip…

12. JAY DANIEL : Brainz
13. A MADE UP SOUND : After Hours
14. THE SUN GOD : Being Hieroglyphic

Once again split over four parts, our 2013 round-up commences with 14 unique pieces of electronic music you really need to know about. They range from mind-bending avant-garde systems to rugged house and clinical electro, taking in the cutting edge of UK grime, grid-dissolving Kiwi D&B and styles that haven’t been christened yet. Joane Skyler’s playfully fractal jungle jaunt, ‘Foam’, has provided us no end of fun this year, whilst the advanced structures of Rashad Becker’s ‘Traditional Music Of Notional Species Vol.1’ and the psychoacoustic techniques of Xopher Davidson & Zbigniew Karkowski have triggered the sort of rare sensations we return to over and again. Equally, artists such as Marina Rosenfeld, Wanda Group and Alex Gray’s D/P/I have deeply infected our listening habits with their intra-dimensional probings, and we’ve been very excited about the time-and-space-bending contortions of A Made Up Sound, FIS, Mordant Music and Logos, who’re all taking UK-rooted dance music to stranger, nexx levels. The emergent vapour trails of Everglade’s hyper-clean ‘Area Login’ have given us a tantalising glimpse of possible futures, whilst Dopplereffekt and Jay Daniel have kept that unique Detroit sound burning bright…
Part2

12. ROJ : Home Telescope Kit 3:00
13. EGYPTIAN SPORTS NETWORK : Jai Lai Space Jump 5:10
14. CARL CRAIG : Meditation 6 (Version)

The second of our 2013 round-ups intersects all manner of cosmic electronics, avant-pop and lustrous R&B. Rather than a definitive overview of this nebulous spectrum, we’d rather take this opportunity to highlight those pieces that might not end up on every end-of-year list, but rather quietly stood out as unique or affecting and stuck in the memory more than others. We’ve been smitten with Ensemble Economique’s epic, defocussed soft rock number ‘We Come Spinning Out Of Control’ off his amazing ‘Fever Logic’ album, and can’t help but return again and again to the breathtaking electronic denouement of The Stranger’s “Where Are Our Monsters Now, Where Are Our Friends?”. Solo female voices were strongly felt both metaphorically and literally, from Laura Groves’ heart-melting ‘Inky Sea’ to Jessy Lanza’s suggestive, Junior Boys-produced soul bomb, ‘Pull My Hair Back’ thru to the probing use of sound design and technique in Katie Gately’s hyper vivid eponymous debut for Public Information and the canny avant compositions of Lucrecia Dalt. At the further (upper) reaches of lo-fi cosmic imagination, the likes of Gnod’s Marlene Ribeiro aka Negra Branca, and Matt Mondanile (Ducktails) & Spencer Clark’s Egyptian Sports Network channelled beautifully free vibes for our benefit, whilst former Broadcast-er Roj offered a divergent yet equally well-schooled vision of stellar synth musics.
Part3

1. VISIONIST : M 5:42
2. OPTIC NERVE : Time Lapse (Time Displacement Mix) 5:31
3. MUMDANCE & LOGOS : In Reverse P.I.V 6:31
4. MSSINGNO : Xe2 5:28
5. RP BOO : Area 72 4:36
6. THE-DRUM : Sim Stem B 5:18
7. SOPHIE : BIPP 3:44
8. LIL JABBA : Serum 4:16
9. TRAXMAN : Manic 3:14
10. LOTIC : Sankofa 6:24
11. PEVERELIST : Aztec Chant 6:12
12. JOE : Maximum Busy Muscle 6:14
13. GOLDEN TEACHER : Sweat Bath With Saturn 4:47
14. SLACKK : Blue Forest

In 2013 the best dancefloors flexed a spectrum of futuristic, colourful and uniquely syncopated grooves that didn’t pander to the trend for beige tech house. As ever, the dynamos of Chicago and Detroit delivered deadly, advanced ideas, most notably in the kinetic energies of Footwork founder RP Boo on ‘Area 72’ or the twisted flux of Traxman’s ‘Manic’, and Optic Nerve repped the rarest Detroit sound with the breathtaking ‘Time Lapse (Time Displacement Mix)’ by-passing pretty much everyone. Related, but twisting in divergent directions, Lotic and Lil Jabba applied individual signatures with the fibrillating ‘Sankofa’ and body-bending triplets of ‘Serum’. Closer to home, the resurgence and mutation of instrumental grime was a joy to witness, especially in future-shocking anthems such as SOPHIE’s ‘Bipp’ or Mssingno’s ‘Xe2’, whilst Slackk and Visionist owned it with their incisive advances. Likewise the UK’s riddim engine worked like few others, turning out exceptional constructions such as Joe’s ‘Maximum Busy Muscle’ and the Mumdance & Logos epic, ‘In Reverse P.I.V.’, whereas the likes of Bristol’s Livity Sound and Glasgow’s Golden Teacher had forward-looking tribalism on lock, albeit with respectively idiosyncratic results.

14 tracks: D&B’s Techno Defection

Artist: VA
Title Of Album: 14 tracks: D&B’s Techno Defection
Year Of Release: 2013
Label: Boomkat / bundle_273
Genre: Techno, Experimental
Quality: MP3
Bitrate: 320 kbps
Total Time: 01:34:46
Total Size: 216 mb

In recent years there’s been an exchange of ideas between the sibling styles of techno and D&B. This week we’ve spotlighted 14 tracks by artists (many of them former D&B producers and rehabilitated junglists) who’ve applied mid-late ’90s D&B/Jungle structures, dynamics and production touches to the 125-135 bpm bracket with much success. Working under various pseudonyms, we find the likes of Velvit (dBridge) forging the hard-stepping techno of ‘The Act’ and Trevino (Marcus Intalex) joining the dots between Reese, Berghain and darker D&B rollige on ‘Doldrums’. There’s a noticeable seam of Bristol producers transposing the momentum and vibe of D&B and Jungle into house and techno tempo, too, just listen to Pev’s mighty roller, ‘Aztec Chant’ or the moody Metalheadz vibes of Hodge’s ‘Resolve’ for proof. And there’s those relative outsiders such as Italian techno producer Alan Backdrop, whose minimal, roiling ‘Honok’ picks up from where D&B-fiends, Monolake and T++ left off, or the stepping dub B-line and Source Direct-like atmosphere of Lee Gamble’s remix for former D&B type, Cosmin TRG, and South London Ordnance’s clinical, streamlined rollige on ‘Floating World’. In some respects it’s a continuation of the Autonomic aesthetic; in others it’s symptomatic of new producers attempting to toy with and loosen the strictures of house and techno. Either way, they’ve got us dancing.

Tracklist:
1. SOUTH LONDON ORDNANCE : Floating World (Original Mix) 8:15
2. ENDIAN : Birdhouse 4:41
3. TREVINO : Doldrums 4:38
