Killer EBM/darkwave collab between NYC/Chicago’s 51717 and Svengalisghost for Ron Morelli’s L.I.E.S. Trust in Pain finds the duo side-stepping the dancefloor to a gloomier, more psychedelic headspace perhaps best consumed in dank basements and dingy bedsits. The combination of Lili Schulder aka 51717’s breathy incantations and Marquis Cooper’s slow-moving, sinuous sonic architectures hark back to classic SPK and Chris & Cosey as much as they remind us of recent exploits from HTRK or even Heinrich Mueller and co’s Zwishenwelt project—a magic union of seductive groove and atmospheric sensuality that begs us to crawl back into its blackened womb.
