The Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation is the heavy droning improv incarnation of The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble. Crafted from a shared interest of the odd folk nature of Britain and the resultant dark strangeness, Throwing Snow and Augustus Ghost pool their individual inspirations, ideas and styles on ‘A Small Murmuration’, the first full-length album under their collaborative Snow Ghosts moniker.

Throwing Snow, aka Ross Tones, first started working with Augustus Ghost, aka Hannah Cartwright, after she first arrived in England five years ago. Hannah comes from a songwriting background, having previously collaborated with Phaeleh as well as singing in the band Masakichi, while Ross possesses more electronic influences – his work as Throwing Snow has gained plaudits from all sides, manifested most recently through invitations to support Bonobo on his forthcoming tour, as well as Thom Yorke’s Atoms For Peace project. Together, the pair shared a mutual influence of the shadowy elements of folk and metal, and it is through these reference points that Snow Ghosts began to take shape.

They first found an outlet for their music through Black Acre Records in 2011 on the ‘Lost At Sea’ EP, and the pair have spent the subsequent two years compiling their debut album through short bursts of writing. In that time everything was done together, from field recording (everything from desperately hanging a mic out the window to record a thunder storm on ‘And The World Was Gone’, to recording leaves rustling in Tower Hamlets graveyard, to an ancient zither and bowed fretless acoustic bass), to reading the same literature – Mark Z Danielewski’s ‘House of Leaves’ left a particularly strong impression on their shared head-space.
“‘A Small Murmuration’ is a shared world that we have created to encompass the middle ground between our love of darkness and the emotions that music can make you feel.” – Snow Ghosts
The music itself is brooding and at times imposing, yet sweepingly majestic throughout – Augustus Ghost’s rich vocals balance perfectly on Throwing Snow’s sombre sonic creations, as hints of industry and mechanism are married with the organic, natural world. The album’s title – ‘A Small Murmuration’ – combines Ross’ love of chaos theory and Hannah’s earthy propensity for nature. The theme is reflected in the imagery surrounding the album – the artwork and photographs come from Hannah’s grandfather in the 1930s, and form a special attachment to each of the tracks. Additional illustration was done by Matthew Ellwood, one of Ross’ oldest and closest friends, who also provided the art for the Black Acre EP. The album as a whole feels little need or desire to fit alongside any current trends, instead focusing on a fundamental formula: of close collaboration, shared interests, and strong friendship.

Left Blank return after a short hiatus with their first release of 2013 from Saa; a new project forged across borders between Asher Levitas of acclaimed shadowy London outfit Old Apparatus, and Norwegian avant-garde musician and vocalist Linn Carin Dirdal.

Taking cues from classic pop production of the 70’s and 80’s, the early 4AD sound of The Cocteau Twins et al, pastoral folk, along with contemporaries such as The Knife, Saa make gloriously intricate avant-pop, as exciting as it is unclassifiable.

Levitas’ high production values will come as no surprise to fans of the aforementioned Old Apparatus, and here his complex rhythm arrangements and delicate electronics perfectly support Dirdal’s layered vocals, which range from upfront and powerful to moments of choral beauty.

“There’s no improving upon the work of the Cameroonian polymath Francis Bebey, a journalist, novelist, and musician who mixed African and Latin styles with jazz and electronic music, sounding at times like some dream combination of Afrobeat and Kraftwerk. (Born Bad’s anthology of his work, African Electronic Music 1975-1982, was one of SPIN’s 10 Best Reissues of 2012; I also covered it in my Control Voltage column.) So you could, understandably, be suspicious of an attempt to remix the work of the late musician, who passed away in 2001. Fortunately, the artists commissioned here appear to have approached the source material with the respect it deserves (yet also, fortunately, without being too dainty about it). Pilooski — the French producer whose bootleg re-edit of Frankie Valli’s “Beggin'” ended up as a minor hit on a major label — keeps his intervention to a minimum in a rework of “Bissau.” The core of the song — mbira, flute, disco-funk bass line, quavering vocal harmonies, foghorn reeds — is all there in the original; Pilooski mainly busies himself with stretching and hammering elements of the track over drum machines and synths until it has the feel of a hand-soldered assemblage, a riot of spinning wheels and honking horns. I don’t know what the original of “Forest Whistle” sounds like, but Daphni’s edit manages to preserve the playful, slightly otherworldly spirit of Bebey’s music while sounding very much like himself, weaving drums and flute and contrapuntal voice and guitar parts around a rickety skeleton of no-frills rhythm box. But that makes sense, given how much of Dan Snaith’s work as Daphni is schooled in Bebey’s own futuristic roots music.

Now available from Experimedia.net.* “The long overdue reissue of Selbstporträt III/Reise durch Arcadien closes a gap in the Roedelius oeuvre which his followers have long since had their eyes on. Those who found the self-portrait series irresistible had to endure a lengthy, impatient wait for the Journey Through Arcadia. As on the other releases in this series, the pieces on Reise durch Arcadien are musical sketches, fleeting ideas and aphorisms of a musician whose exuberant imagination assumes tonal form in almost every moment of his life. Created between 1973 and 1978 and recorded with decidedly modest technical equipment, this music reflects Roedelius’ most intimate, wholly undisguised vision of humane music. Almost casually, Roedelius offers us as listeners direct access to his artistic riches. Neither seeking to impose himself upon us, nor setting out to impress, he simply wishes to share with us something he could barely put into words. Utterly detached from time, stylistically unique, these tracks could easily be contemporary creations. Only the questionable recording quality (common to the majority of the self-portrait pieces) hints at a bygone age. This in no way diminishes the musical quality, however. On the contrary, it serves to emphasize the spontaneity and authenticity of the sketches. Roedelius was not interested in creating smoothly polished, perfect electronic music productions. His artistry lies in capturing musical ideas which appear like flashes of lightning and developing them through improvisation. With this in mind, he always pressed record on his tape machine when he sat down at the keyboard, channeling his thoughts, feelings and moods into music. In such moments of inspiration, there was simply no space to consider sound quality, dynamics, tonal balance or special sound effects.
