Label head Gernot Bronsert stated recently: „It is very seldom that we receive a demo from a nearly unknown artist, that we sign right away for a 3 album deal.“

And indeed this is very seldom, maybe it is even a very first for the label and shows how strongly we believe in Alex Banks’ vision.His soundscapes are very emotional, but at the same time energetic and driving. Their intricate sound design and delicate layering make them seem new every time you play them.

The studied musician and multi-instrumentalist knows very well how to combine the complex and the pleasing, like his musical peers Nicolas Jaar, Jon Hopkins, Moderat or Bonobo. His well trained ear and his countless nights out as an enthusiastic clubgoer, make this album a feast for music lovers and dancefloor steppers alike.

In the making of “Illuminate” Alex has used his enormous synth library, stuffed with such mythical instruments as a Moog voyager, a SH 101 and an MS 10 (just to name a few), to its extent. The outcome is a beautiful album that might even be able to unite techno and dubstep lovers in their ever ongoing 4/4 versus breakbeat debate. But it would be very one sided to lean on the technical expertise that has led to “Illuminate”, there is also the unique vocal talent of Elizabeth Bernholz. Her voice lends the fragility of a Beth Gibbons paired with Björk´s otherworldly phrasing to the album´s first single „All You Could Do“ as well as to the album opener „Silent Embrace“ and the more balladeske shuffle of „ A Matter Of Time“. These songs have the potential to cross over into radio land without sounding “mainstream” in any way.

One of these things is not like the others. Jus Ed is in introspective mood on his latest full-length excursion into atmospheric deep house pastures. As the title suggests, it finds him musing – quite literally, given that he speaks over many of the tracks – on his role as a father and whether he’s a good role model to his offspring. It’s heartfelt stuff, without being overbearing or sickly-sweet, and sits nicely with the warm, rich, melodic and occasionally off-kilter deep house grooves that provide the headline attraction. While Father Feelings should perhaps be considered one CD-length concept piece, there are still notable highlights, with the Latin-tinged, string-laden rush of “Celebration of Sound” and late night, sub-heavy pulse of “Love Pressure” standing out.

MOON ZERO is the enigmatic and ethereal project of London-based Tim Garratt. Composed and recorded entirely in churches, Moon Zero’s compositions explore the harmonic chaos of competing frequencies. Denovali Records is pleased to announce the release of Moon Zero’s second EP ‘LOSS’ on vinyl and 2xCD, where the second CD will contain the first EP ‘TOMBS’ and remixes thereof, previously available only as a limited cassette release. This edition of ‘Tombs’ will also appear as a separate vinyl release.

‘TOMBS’ is, especially for a debut, a bold and confident musical statement, which reimagines the possibilities of processed organ and laptop sounds in a live context. The opener ‘Dalyan’ builds from slowly wavering layers of sound into a crumbling, decaying wall of fuzzed-out, peaking noise, which in turn builds again into ever-moving blocks of chopped loops and feedback, absorbing the listener completely into Moon Zero’s musical space. A remarkable listen.

‘LOSS’ is the result of a year spent working out how to play Moon Zero live and then going on to play concerts. Using a wide range of instrumentation such ad drawbar organ, bass synth, vocals, fx processors and guitar pedals, Loss was written & recorded over 2 days at St George in The East Church in London, October 2013.

Whereas ‘Tombs’ was more concerned with exploring melody in an ambient space, ‘Loss’ is looking at pulse and movement in sound. Indeed, Garratt states: “I wanted to create a soundscape that had a propulsion to it, a sense of rhythm but without drums. I like sounds which are dynamic in terms of both volume and frequency range, they need to have a life to them and breathe.”

Composing and recording in churches, the musical works of Moon Zero embody their character; the authentic space and depth to the sound. Some frequencies cause parts of the church to vibrate wildly. One can hear children playing outside and wind blowing through the gaps of the windows. It has life.

Garratt adds: “There is a sad solitude of being alone in a large room, and as an atheist I find no comfort in the doctrine that surrounds me.” Moon Zero’s compositions leave with that isolation on them, the setting is directly influencing the music. Indeed, Loss is inspired by dimming nostalgia and inevitability. Exploring ideas about the end and decay of life cycles, these four tracks constitute a staggering masterpiece.

The debut album „Alset“ by musician Giuseppe Fallacara aka “Glanko” tells the story of genius Nikola Tesla. Quite similar to the complexity of the topic, „Alset“ is a comprehensive mixture between hard-driving rhythms and tense harmonies in a hazy way. These components evolve into a kind of transparent energy created by analogue sound generators, sound filters and numerous sound effects. Alienated guitar parts dive into dynamic IDM beats and bring the songs alive. Nothing remembers of a classical guitar sound anymore. Peaceful parts transform into highly charged impulses again and again and reveal their complexity in every track of this album perfectly. It’s not overloaded with harmonies – “Alset” contains a multifarious sound catching the listener’s attention all the time.

Pinning down Sascha Dive as Cocoons deephouse wunderkind wouldn’t really hit the nail on the head however it isn’t far from truth. Compared to most other artists of this genre he can for sure be classified as a young gun but there is no soundproof for his age in his music at all. Sascha Dive’s music is loaded with a respectful amount of taste and house history you would normally find in the productions and DJ-sets of artists who started in the early 90s. And this is not unwanted: Dive admires and follows the big names of house and deep house and his musical efforts to pay respect to them brought him on par with his legends!

So it’s no wonder that Sascha Dive productions found their way to top notch labels like Tsuba, Freebase, Deep Labs (Balance US) or Raum…Musik. Not to forget his release for Ornaments and the Moodyman remix for “Deepest America”. Having in mind where Dive started with his first album “Restless Nights” and what he achieved until he received remix-honours from Mister Kenny Dixon Jr. one could think Sascha Dive scored all goals he wanted to score. However the journey didn’t stop here: Being a Cocoon artist and having played for some of the major Cocoon nights in Ibiza and around the globe Dive incorporated a decent amount of electronic soul and after-hour-madness to his music over the last years. He even admits that his current productions and DJ-sets are definitely influenced by current techno- and techno-house artists and this special feeling this music adds to a party.

And this progression is clearly audible in his new and upcoming album “Dark Shadow” which is a great example of the sound of Sascha Dive in the year 2013. His debut album “Restless Nights” was already an amazing collection of that typical deep vibed Dive sound but “Dark Shadow” opens up new fields of music and creativity for this (still) young man. “Dark Shadows” is not just a collection of tracks, it is a mad journey that has the potential to take you deeper and deeper underground and back to the top again. Lakker’s Ian McDonnell steps out with a full length album for Killekill, the Berlin-based label that’s been so supportive of the Irish production unit over the past four years. Spectre is the debut Eomac set but there’s a confidence to the manner in which McDonnell explores various angles of techno and the hardcore continuum within the eleven tracks that’s no doubt been cultivated over the course of his work with Lakker studio partner Dara Smith. The punishing half step crunch and dystopian atmospherics of open track “Su Riddim” sets the tone, as the Eomac universe is revealed to be a place of many tempos and styles. The tense face off between heavy duty basslines, brittle broken beats and heart wrenching melodic chimes on “Forest” and the lurching drama of the title track are immediate highlights but the more time you give Spectre, the more it feels like one of the techno albums of the year.
