“When I first began this project twenty eight months ago, I had no idea the end result would look the way it does today. I had obviously a goal in mind, goal which, I am proud to say, I have completely forgotten as the enterprise gained in importance. Nonetheless, I did feel as though I was making progress in some soon to be defined direction. At this level, it wasn’t necessary that my objective was clear. A gut. My gut was pushing me to spit out this… this…tape. Hence the name. Most of the time, I didn’t even know what was going on. The tape is a really nice tape to listen to while you’re, say, running in the park. Just put it in your cassette player and go run outside. You can run in your apartment too if it is big enough but you might as well go outside, if it’s nice enough. You can also listen to it when you are cooking or washing the dishes. Don’t play it, like, if you are a spa owner. That is bad publicity and I can sue for that. I will be very serious with that, don’t play it at your local spa please. Thank you.”

The last few years have seen Chicago Footwork rise to international success, and Traxman’s debut album – ‘The Mind of Traxman’ on Planet Mu – played no small part in that. It showcased Cornelius Ferguson’s brilliant ability to synthesise the beat digging of classic hip hop with the high-speed abstraction of Footwork’s house-derived beat science.

The selection of tracks on this second chapter show a slightly different take on Traxman’s abilities. Instead of bringing in concepts from other genres, he simply creates a wider variety of Footwork, made with a minimal, reduced palette. Often just one or two samples are selected and diced into brain-blurring cubist puzzles that bear little relation to their original sources, or anything else for that matter.

A number of the tracks here show off the high-speed micro-edited possibilities of Footwork, that end up bringing the sound closer to a faster, hands-on, mpc-punched version of micro-house, bringing out a jagged, fitful character that keeps you on your toes. Tracks like ‘Time Slip’ echo SND, but cut with hip hop breaks and flying snares, while ‘Blow Your Whistle (Tha Out Of Here Remixx)’ chops up a short vocal and whistle noise to ridiculously energetic effect. Other tracks pull on a techno edge, ‘Computer Getto’s galloping game of hide and seek with Kraftwerk, ‘Bubbles‘ electronic arcade game blips, or ‘Under Cover Jack‘s 303 groove, remind one of the house origins of this music, while ‘Can Nutin Hold Me Back’ has a leg in soul’s history, with its detached accapella chopped into twitchy choruses. Later on ‘15146’ cuts up barked numbers over sprightly woodwind while ‘Gone and Hit that Shit’ reduces words to rhythmic shapes, darting around meaning. ‘The Edge of Panic’ is an unexpected and incredibly aggressive detour into Footwork x Speed Metal that could be a micro-genre of its own. We catch our breath with ‘I Wanna Be High’ before the album ends with the gentle bass and chopped jazz drums of ‘U Got Me Running (Remixx)’. The mind of Traxman dazzles again.

Traxman, a.k.a. Corky Strong, real name Cornelius Ferguson, is a Chicago Footwork veteran whose discography also includes many classic Ghetto House and Juke releases going as far back as the mid ’90s with music on labels like the legendary Dance Mania. He’s worked as a DJ for over three decades and was a member of the Geto DJz and Ghetto Teknitianz crews alongside two other Footwork scene leaders, DJ Rashad and DJ Spinn. He describes his style as “funky, soulful and a bit eccentric.”

I am OK, reads the title of the new album by the Berlin-based producer, DJ and label-owner Oliver Koletzki. The heading0s ambiguity is, of course, deliberate: theres a deeper meaning hidden behind the humorous facade that is Chrisse Kunsts hand-drawn cover, which depicts an unadorned thirteen-year-old Oliver sporting nerd glasses and a striped jumper: I am Oliver Koletzki, raw and authentic. Because musically, on his fifth studio album, Oliver Koletzki looks towards the unaffected freshness of back in the day, and thus, consciously returns to his roots. The nine years that follow his breakthrough with Der Mückenschwarm, which was released in 2005 on Sven Väths legendary Cocoon imprint, see Oliver travel to 211 cities in 39 countries. Next to the worlds most renowned clubs, he plays the large festival stages at Timewarp, Rock am Ring, Rainbow Serpent or MELT!. During the week, however, hes locked in his studio. Thus, the successful long-players Großstadtmärchen (2009) and Großstadtmärchen 2 (2012), as well as his debut Get Wasted (2007), and Lovestoned (2010), a collaborative effort with the singer Fran, are born. Simultaneously, Oliver Koletzkis label Stil vor Talent has been setting new trends in electronic music since 2006 as it has evolved into a stepping-stone for hot newcomer talents. Whether its the discovery of David August, Sascha Braemer or HVOB: Olivers knack as an A&R is almost uncanny. He does, however, always remain faithful to his penchant for melodic and emotional house music. Over the course of eight years, Stil vor Talent thus grew from a small DIY-operation into a large independent label with an attached booking agency and fashion branch. In 2012, Oliver Koletzki founds a second label, Light my Fire, which is focused solely on the dance-floor. Similar to his philosophy as the head of two labels, the songs on I am OK exemplify the effortless balancing act that has become a Koletzki-trademark: a breath-taking symbiosis of groove and melody. After the more pop-oriented long-players of recent years, Oliver returns to the club, without every losing sight of his unique musicality, of course. Throughout its 13 tracks and eight collaborations, we encounter music for festival stages, basement venues, and radio stations alike. Nods to elevating disco, old-school hip-hop, electronic broken-beat, smooth soul, UK garage, dub techno, mellow deep house, and clever electro-pop merge within a beautifully produced house music framework. Things kick off with a bang Gravity. Best known for the chart-topping Materia / Miss Platnum collaboration Lila Wolken, the Berliner Yasha lends his inviting voice to an electrifying explosion of torrential rolling bleeps, fat bass-lines and subtle guitar licks, weaved into an instantly addictive result by Oliver. Next up, NÖRDs Leo Eisenach delivers emotional vocals on After All, which float through Oliver Koletzkis tight arrangement of heavy electronica beats, areal synths, creaking bass and nostalgic piano keys. Up in the Air featuring Fran takes a more organic approach, as it picks up where everyones favourite Hypnotized left off: feel-good sunshine boogie led by Frans extraordinarily iconic voice. Summer is on its way! A fact that is further emphasised by the following track, Bring Me Home. Helped along by a swaying groove, melancholic pads and soft piano melodies, this is an ode to the open-air season and all of its tender promises. Aided by German starlet Leslie Clio, Oliver Koletzki combines his love for 80s synthesizers with a satisfying bounce and the slightest hint of an Italo-bass-line on the stunning No Man No Cry. Oliver and HRRSN then impress on So Wrong, as the latters warm vocal chords and falsetto peaks compliment the formers piano- and guitar-driven funk instrumental, turning the albums sixth tracks into another stand-out. After a hip-hop breather, which offers itself in the form of the deliciously old-school Hommage to Olivers hometown of Brunswick together with local rap-legend MC Rene, I am OK takes another turn towards the floor. On Parachute, Oliver teams-up with SUOL darling Meggy, whose recognizable vox is backed by a stepping garage groove, accentuated by bright chords and enveloping bass drops. The following track, This Love, offers similar UK-vibes, yet swaps the full vocal against chopped-up samples: an energetic peak-time tool for the up-to-date DJ. With Streetknowledge, the albums most club-ready segment climaxes, as Oliver surprises with Basic Channel-esque dub techno chords that glide through a maze of tough bass-lines and razor-sharp percussion. Many a Stil vor Talent fans heart will no doubt skip a beat in anticipation of the collaboration between HVOB and Oliver Koletzki. On Bones, the pairing proofs to be a match made in heaven as Anna Müllers inimitable voice gets its most energetic outing to-date due to a trance-inducing progressive house foundation courtesy of Oliver. Thunder then introduces the penultimate track, Too Soon featuring NÖRD, which bedazzles with its cinematic scope, epic synth melodies and heartache lyrics. Lastly, the echoing piano rolls and spoken-word of Reality bid a gentle farewell, as Oliver quite literally walks us out of his unique musical world. I am OK Oliver Koletzki says modestly. In 2014, after 26 years as a musician, he clearly achieved what he set out to do. And his fifth album serves as testimony. Hypothetically he could have a bit of a rest. The energy of each new track here does emphasise, however, that he wont retire any time soon: Oliver Koletzki is just getting started.

We Have Band return this year with their third album MOVEMENTS, released on 28th April 2014, through Naive.
Movements is 11 songs conceived in their East London basement studio, produced by band member Tom Wegg-Prosser with additional glitter added by Tim Goldsworthy (DFA Records, LCD Soundsystem, Unkle, Mo’ Wax). It is music from the sweaty hearts of husband and wife Tom and Dede and band mate Darren Bancroft.
Movements celebrates the sacred union of beat and lyric. When Darren sings on ‘You Only’, “Your movements stayed with me all day long, your mind was always on mine” it is the Moog line working with the vocal melody that stays with you. Dede’s assertion on ‘Burning On My Lips’ that, “Standing in the line, first to lose my mind, don’t tell me that it’s wrong, this is where I belong” is delivered with a conviction that the kick drum stamps out with every pulse. It is that repetitious, powerful mantra that makes MOVEMENTS a record impossible not to feel, impossible not to move to. The record that the band always set out to make.

Occultsystem is Canadian producer Robert Squire’s first release on the LA label, and also marks a major return to music after moving to Montreal to open a barber shop. The one-time hip-hop producer formerly known as Sixtoo (and one member of Megasoid) has lived all around Canada, and he established the Prison Garde moniker while in Vancouver around 2011 as an outlet for house and boogie-influenced hardware jams. The imprint calls the tape “ten of his starkest greyscale technoid skeletons” made using “a TR-909, Moog Minitaur, Juno-60, Tetra synthesizer, 3630 Compressor, some pedals, and a mixing desk.” Montrealer Ango and Vancouverites Ace Decade and Kevin Eames also contributed to the release, which is out digitally today. Hidden Tapes is composed from old cassette tapes, with addition of some other sources from movies soundtracks and classical or liturgical music extracts which were retrieved in closets. These sound documents were accelerated or slowed down, layered and transformed with analog devices. No digital effect, no plugin. Computer was only used for editing and mixing. Composed on 2013.

Vincent Casanovas bouncy, stripped-down sound hints at summer. Muted bass notes and pleasant synth lines are accompanied by ethereal vocal samples and dancing rhythms. A dreamy optimism flows throughout the album, making it cohesive and easy on the ears. Some of the definitive aspects of this release are the engaging grooves, and charming melodies that complement the percussive structure. This latest release shows skill with space and lightness. As a counterpart to that lightness, ARCH106 features an Alicia remix that demonstrates dexterity with depth. Overall, Casanovas music is a combination of solid musical arrangement and artistic wit.
