Started by German duo Daniel Varga and Michael Kuebler in 2000, Rework added Sascha Hedgehog, front girl of French beat­punk band Les Quitriche, to the equation five years later. Despite having developed a strong relationship with Playhouse, who put out their first album, the trio will turn to Visionquest for their latest project. Following on from last year’s Touch EP, the album sees Varga and Kuebler try their hand at club-orientated grooves, complemented by Hedgehog’s musings on love (in both French and English). Across its 11 tracks, You Play moves between moments of bouncy synth-pop (“Perfect Gun”), dark deep house (“Your Play”) and the occasional flash of techno (“TheTwoSides”.)

Composed in the confines of a Toronto studio, the expansive sound of End Scene is based on decades of VHS-addled film music, new wave jams, weirdo library records, acid house bangers, selected ambient works, and warehouse jackers. Crafted for modern listening from the analog echoes of cybernetic dreams, End Scene reflects a cohesive vision for the Jokers of the Scene’s intensely eclectic sensibility. This is headphone music made to move bodies, at once familiar and confounding fresh.

From the ominous intro, “Umbilical Chords,” through the slow house of “Channels For Success” and the gritty sheen of “Industrial Blonde,” this collection builds on the Jokers’ strengths and successes. But the duo, comprised of Linus Booth and Chris Macintyre, defy expectation at every turn; moving from the cavernous percussion of “Home Video Is Wherever I’m With You” to the widescreen ecstasy of “Stoned In Death Valley” and the breakneck pace of “Hunk Of Punk.” The ambient vibes of the Jokers’ 2012 ” Lovely Sort of Death” (originally released in two parts by Scion on limited 7” vinyl) close out the album as a digital-only bonus.

Looking to do more than simply get End Scene into stores, Booth and Macintyre recruited Adam Marshall’s acclaimed New Kanada imprint and NYC’s underground powerhouse Throne Of Blood to create a collaborative label, Throne Of Kanada, to help realize their full vision for End Scene. In addition to the LP, JOTS are releasing a special cassette-only set of “bonus tracks” with LA’s Mount Analog and are working with New York based musician and artist Sean Dack to create the album artwork as well as a series of short films to accompany each track. Keeping with the duo’s notion of “casting” a dream team to realize End Scene, mastering was done by the likeminded musical iconoclast James Savage, from Glasgow’s inimitable Naum Gabo. Everything is immaculately crafted, right down to the titles – plays on words that show that even when they’re doling out dark slabs of drone and heady techno, these are Jokers at heart.

senko, who has also appeared as slew52, slam52 and .slam: is the aarhus / denmark based project of daniel kosenko. the manipulation of pure data into sound (or ‘klang’, as he designates it) has now become his main focus.

kosenko’s musical intention has always been of an explorative and experimental embouchure and for this release, senko’s aim was to develop ‘a system’ with a semi-generative approach to harmonics, in which synths and sounds ‘resolve’ each others harmonic ideas, and ‘talk’ to each other ‘forcing the hand of chance’. the process of developing ‘the system’ was inspired by such wide ranging artists as john coltrane, györgy ligeti and psychic tv. artists who always found a perfect balance between improvisation and elaborate concepts.

After more than a decade of releasing raw and emotional house music, Dutch producer and architect Aroy Dee is about to drop his debut album on his own M>O>S label.

Aroy Dee was on the receiving end of excitement in recent months thanks to his club owning remix of Design a Wave track on ‘#####’ released via Rush Hour’s No Label series. Aside from that cheeky release and his membership of R-A-G, the man has established himself as someone who creates misty analogue music that nods to a Chicago heyday at the same time as coming imbued with plenty of its own deep emotions, mystic melodies and jacking beats.

His M>O>S label has become a go-to outlet for fans of no nonsense house and that tradition continues on this full-length album. Incidentally, M>O>S stands for Muziek Over Steden – Dutch for ‘music about cities’ – because Dee has a close tie to buildings: during the day he works as an architect so has an unrivalled grasp of space, structure and urban environments that surely translates into his well built house music, and more specifically into this debut album. Made with the same hardware that defines the rest of his discography, including his first synth, the Poly 800, which he bought from his friend NWAQ, Sketches is a truly idiosyncratic project.

Says Aroy… “For me, my musical output and development feels like an on going history of my life. In this perspective I worked steadily over the last two years on my first full-length album, Sketches. It’s a very personal document, not intended to make anybody happy but myself, which is why it has taken so long. It’s like a diary or ghost-script written about a part of my life and my fascinations, honoring my biggest musical inspirations.”

Sketches has been made for home listening, thereby resisting the ever-changing trends of the dance floor. The album sets a continuous mood that slowly intensifies, evolves and unfolds, taking you through new sounds and scenes in coherent and considered ways. Opening with the blissful ambiance of ‘Night Sky’ it slowly roams through stretched out, atmospheric deep house on ‘Pure’, lazy electro on ‘Decay’ and sombre future city scapes on ‘Descent’.

‘City Of Others’ begins to jack and whip around more energetically but retains a serene sense of soul thanks to the smooth and seductive synths. The second half of the album picks up the pace a little, with icy hi hats, prickly basslines and careful percussive cacophonies jamming around the ever present synth patterns Dee so expertly paints.

A self contained work that combines that distinct Aroy Dee sound we know and love with the proper narrative arc any good album requires, Sketches has been a long time coming but proves most certainly worth the wait.

Loud Neighbor is the collaborative guise of Christina Steel aka STEEL5000, notably known for her Loving The Alien series, and sound engineer Martín García Blaya. The pair met on the dance floor of Madrid’s infamous Coppelia 101 club while Christina was in the country studying abroad for her third year at The School Of Art Institute Chicago, Martín had already been in the country for three years advancing his engineering career within the film industry. Now following a string of musical endeavors together, bouncing around different hemispheres and continents, the duo have their feet firmly on the ground with their Loud Neighbor project, delivering infectious, intricate and elegant sounds which flirt in the fields of dub, house, electro and techno. Road testing the pieces in underground warehouse events in Buenos Aires (Martín’s home turf), as well as Spain, Portugal, New York, Berlin and the Caribbean.

‘Escape Control’ as a whole sees the duo experiment with their live set-up, built around an amalgamation of analogue synthesizers, drum machines and digital tools. Classics such as the Korg Polysix, Roland SH-101 and the Yamaha CS20-M are prevalent in the compositions, while newcomers such as Dave Smith’s Tetra, Mopho and the MFB-522, add contemporary grit to brilliantly contrast the old and the new. Title track ‘Escape Control’ kicks things off, showcasing in style the prominent theme of the album, this being throbbing techno bass tones, STEEL5000’s sassy vocal styling’s, melancholic harmonies and raw synth lines. ‘Spineless’ and ‘Constant’ employ a more ethereal atmospheric approach, delving into dreamy synths and hypnotizing vocals, while ‘George’ and ‘Sandfly’ showcase the more direct and insistent side of the duo’s productions with their glitchy electronic synth hooks, raw rhythms and ever evolving dynamic.

Further highlights come in the shape of ‘The Fellonship’ with its smooth, airy ambience and classical inspired strings compositions. While ‘Black Clouds’ and ‘Train Daddy’ showcase the quirkier, tripped out aspects of the duo with dub touches, acid-tinged synths, menacing background atmospherics and a general spellbinding aesthetic. In conclusion Loud Neighbor deliver a stunning body of work here with ‘Escape Control’, they tell us ‘‘Each individual track has it’s own back story, but they all have the same root. Cracking debut album of Texan house from Gavin Guthrie aka TX Connect. Over the last 12 months Gavin’s established an enviable rep with sophisticated, jakked-up 12″s for the likes of Dixon Avenue Basement Jams and L.I.E.S., and this eponymous album introduction for Holland’s Creme Organization is set to spread his rep much further. Hailing from Texas, the birthplace of ecstasy use in clubs, it’s perhaps no wonder that his sound has a really tactile lushness; from the warm, swirling chords and swinging groove of ‘Soundtrack 909’ thru the eye-fluttering flux and kinky 727 patterns of ‘Palm Sunday’ to the trancing acid rush and DMT refractions of ‘Desmond’s Obsession’ his music brims with a utopian, futurist optimism that can’t be sniffed at and is bound to work wonders on the right ‘floors.

“Lo-tech homemade house and techno maneuvers out of British Columbia from D. Tiffany, whose recent relocation from Vancouver to her hometown of Nelson resulted in this debut collection of super raw and mesmeric experiments in home electronics. Inflected with some of the acid and much of the smoke from her 1080p split with Bobby Draino last year (under the Xophie Xweetland moniker), this self-titled release is as immersive as dissociative. Jittery, hypnogogic drifters like opener “Tranq Moon” are a mission statement for the smoked out and slinky grooves that emanate out of each of this release as a whole; loose but economical hybrids with a twisted sense of motion and genuinely weird sense of texture. “Fade Groove”’s nine minutes are a foggy yet glassy trip bumping with restless cowbell and a busted acid melody, a perfect example in both name and nature of her interest in deconstructing classic tempos into an indoors, escapist blur of brittle textures and subdued euphoria. D. Tiffany’s take on fantasy seems a specific one, a sort of burnt out flight of fancy thanks to a wild and fried imagination and just straight up cabin fever from the heavy Nelson winter. This deracinated take on house and techno ideals is built with blissed-out naivety and a super idiosyncratic set of frenetic rhythms and eye for comfy vibrations.”

LA’s Neil Reinalda aka Phork returns to NNA Tapes – home of his best gear – with another light-footed, bass-heavy flux of dub, hip hop, field recordings and electronic psychedelia. ‘High End’ feels like his most coherent long-player to date, following a cryptically Cageian sense of logic across its six songs and 30 minute playing time. ‘Wrecked’ sets a spare, ambiguous tone with doo wop-like vocal harmonies and sharp guitar licks contrasted against dank drips and sparse, percolating drum machines until a whining dial tone and crackling location recordings bleed thru into the darker, repeato refractions of ‘Work’, itself ending amidst abstract swirl of textured field sources. Likewise, ‘Contact’ continues this line of enquiry, crossing dimensions between evocative spaces and Afro-futurist rhythmelodies, conjuring the sensation of being two or three places at once. The discordant compisiton ‘Oof’ slowly deviates into a sealed airlock. preciptating the jagged pulses of ‘Contact’ and spooling stabs of ‘Debt’ to close, leaving us beguiled and running back to the start.
