It’s a new Mr. Scruff album and you know what to expect, right? We widdle on about sexy potatoes and bouncy bacteria offering you a cup of tea, you have a little chuckle and actually make a brew, you stick on the album and… hold on. Because you see, quietly and without a lot of fuss (cos that’s not the way the Stockport Strepsil rolls) Mr. Scruff aka Andy Carthy has been evolving and developing his music.

So yeah, you can still count upon a shedload of gritty funk and stony soul (not sure where this metaphor’s going..?) but the new record displays a stripped back musicality, a depth that maybe hasn’t been there before. It’s been coming across his last few releases, but this is the most complete, sustained exploration of where his music is at right now. In Carthy’s own pithy words it’s “tougher, sparser, less samples, more bass. More vocals and collaborations and shorter tunes.”

If this record proves anything, it’s that there’s more, much more to the work of Andy Carthy than dancefloor grooves and funny cartoons.

Don’t worry though – it is still one sexy potato.

With ‘My Love Is A Bulldozer’, Venetian Snares first new album since 2010’s ‘My So-Called Life’, Aaron Funk surprises yet again, drawing on new ideas and on moods that have only been touched upon in his previous work.

The album seems to have a flowing sense of narrative, something akin to an opera, and unusually Aaron sings songs on it, which reinforces the sense of an emotional journey. Sonically he meshes together sometimes thunderous yet complex drum programming with delicate musical structures, creating, in places, a sense of haunted, atmospheric Jazziness, as well as spiky autumnal strings recalling the gothic orchestral beauty of his previous work.

Right from the start it’s clear we’re in new territory, with the distressed and violent ’10th Circle Of Winnipeg’, featuring a world weary jazz singer intoning deep emotional loss between crashing breaks and a corkscrewing bassline, giving us a sense of bewilderment and hurt, whereas ‘Deleted Poems’, all mournful strings and flamenco guitar, evokes empty desolation. ‘1000 Years’ is the first time we hear Aaron’s romantic singing with its orchestral accompaniment, coming across with a slightly medieval quality, cut up dramatically with angry fitful drum programming. On ‘Your Smiling Face’ Aaron’s voice is both lamenting and slightly manic over an empty downbeat drums and piano, switching quickly in mood to the cartoony rush of ‘Amazon’.

Title track ‘My Love Is A Bulldozer’ is as close as Snares gets to a pop song, with its gothic, self-deprecating vocals and dark synth melodies, but this is quickly splintered apart by rushing drumwork and metal stabs leaving you breathless. ‘She Runs’ sees things get warmer and more romantic, with epic chords and building, fidgety drums, rushing closer and closer in anticipation towards the end as if they’re speeding towards a destination. ‘Too Far Across’, drops back to sparse, lonely lyrics, the vocals yearning to see a distant lover, over sad plucked guitar.

‘Dear Poet’ is an epic track that starts by working up strings and brass into shivering shapes cut with violent stabs, before amens drop in and the orchestral work becomes a dramatic accompaniment, the melodies darting across the deftly programmed drums. ‘Your Blanket’ finishes off the album, cold, beatless and balletic, gently building some light into the string arrangements, before the track finally forms together with bombastic brass, suggesting a potentially positive end.

After making his debut on Jimpster’s Freerange imprint last year, deep house producer Kito Jempere has decided to strike out on his own, delivering a surprise debut album on his new Fata Morgana imprint. Objects is an intriguing debut, if truth be told, with Jempere delivering a string of off-kilter cuts variously influenced by deep house (the excellent “Gas Station”, jazz, electronica, dubwise downtempo beats (the moody “Conversation” with Larry Far), new age (the deliciously ambient “HW Whales”), and sparse Latin percussion (the Ninos Du Brasil style tropical pagan percussion jam “Jarvi”). The result is an intriguing and entertaining set bristling with imaginative ideas, alien melodies and left-of-centre textures.

Free USA is the first full-length album by Protect-U, the Washington, DC-based duo of Aaron Leitko and Future Times Records co-founder Mike Petillo.
The record was written, recorded, and mixed throughout 2013 at Protect-U’s home studio and mastered by Matt Colton at Alchemy Mastering. The tracks on Free USA were jammed into being and then laser-cut into exact shapes. On their two Future Times EPs – Double Rainbow and World Music – Leitko and Petillo poured layers of ambient drift onto nearly-steady house foundations, creating long and propulsive zone-outs. On Free USA, Protect-U doesn’t depart from this sound as much as they launch further and further out with it, specifically in the rhythm section, which pivots and lurches into unexpected places throughout the LP. Melodically, automation and humanity combine with dizzying, psychedelic grace, making the sound design sparkle with cool precision. From the bright, super-soaked opening track “Needs” to the boxed-in drum clunk and iced-out coda of “Down the Tubes,” Free USA showcases Protect-U’s constantly mutating strand of electronic music.

Formed in 2009, Protect-U has released music on Future Times, Planet Mu, Vibrations, No Pain in Pop, and done remixes for Awesome Tapes From Africa, Meakusma, and Public Possession. In 2013, they were invited to collaborate with Maxmillion Dunbar and Peaking Lights at Red Bull Music Academy’s “Pass the Gates: NYC in Dub” event.

Picking up right where the last track on the previous COH release RETRO-2038 left off, the new album is focused on the use of beats within the similar aesthetics. While most of the previous COH records openly shy away from accentuated beat structures and instead build up their rhythmical content by layering waves and pulses, every track on TO BEAT is padded with just that – beats. The music transition is illustrated in the album’s artwork, displaying transformation of a sine-wave, a tone, into a waveform which is “beat”. This mathematical progression is made audible in the album’s opening track WAVE TO BEAT. The rest of the album, however, steers clear from dull math and presents the beats in their more traditional context of what could be referred to as “adventurous dance music”, taking the listener through various examples of beat use with the sense of playfulness and joy. The final piece, BEAT TO WAVE, wraps it up by dissolving a simplistic post-techno piece into a tonal chord. This brings back the album’s main idea, where tone and beat are essentially one and the same, like vowels and consonants in a language, like Yin and Yang in music.
