After a string of mixtapes that announced them to the world, US duo 18+ follow up a 7″ single for Houndstooth with their debut album, weaving an enchanting tale of melancholic electronica across 14 rapid fire tracks. The production comes on simple and direct, using certain trap influences in the downtempo beats to ensure the focus is on the vocalists. The interplay between the boy-girl pair works a treat, adding to the moody sensuality of the music. Still they manage to keep a certain androgynous iciness in the mix, like all dark-tinged electronic music needs to cast its enchanting spell.

Breaking through this summer with their debut EP Glass Body, the cosmic wall-of-sound duo SAS now undergo some drastic remix treatments to the point the tracks are almost unrecognisable. The ethereal cries of “Halo Heart” are subverted into a mid 90s techno/prog roller by Lucy and the densely textured elements of “All Our Beasts” are underpinned by Gang Gang Dance’s quirky bleep breaks twist. Further on the muffled, barbed euphoria of “Glass Body” gets a complete acid attack from Gabe Gurnsey while “Black Birds” gets the subtlest reversion by Maria Minerva as the vocal is maintained as the centre stage focus, and the beats and loopy hook give the track more dancefloor appeal.

One of Techno’s slipperiest operators presents his debut album statement in the subtle but lush structures of ‘Suzi Ecto’ for Fabric/Rob Booth’s Houndstooth. Over the last four years the London-based musician has garnered the respect of everyone from PAN’s Bill Kouligas to Ben UFO and Objekt, exemplifying his artistic versatility and aptitude for transcending cerebral and club dimensions. With ‘Suzi Ecto’ he opens a lucidly gorgeous space between the ‘floor and our imagination, sweeping us thru eleven concisely detailed prisms refracting classic IDM and exotic 4th world ambient thru minimal techno and garage frameworks. It’s all got a very contrary English quality to it, contradicting sheer and prickly textures with blissful and melancholic emotions to discern a systemic sound that plays and feeds off its binaries, from the meld of glassy electronics, airborne jszz sax and mnml dancehall bump of ‘Sulu Sekou’ to the dank but brittle techno jag of ‘Hoax Eye’, and the gyroscopic, head-gone whorl of ‘Acephale I’. Most crucially he nails that balancing act of esoteric intent, and physical, tactile function, proving himself one of the most intangible, elusive – in terms of aesthetics – producers from the UK right now.

Snow Ghosts’ 3rd single from ‘A Small Murmuration’ features remixes of its most enigmatic highlight, ‘Secret Garden’ by none other than Richard Skelton and Matthew Herbert. Skelton’s re-working (is this his first ever remix?) is just fantastic – keeping the vocal intact but replacing the space previously occupied by the drums with a rolling soundscape of his trusted bowed strings and a synth drone that’s completely outside his musical comfort zone. It’s a striking juxtaposition that’s opened our eyes to what might happen if this amazing producer would reach outside his usual palette – and although the vocal is just too sweet for our liking, the production is genuinely mesmerising. By contrast, Matthew Herbert takes the same cut to the ‘floor with lithe, rolling drums and supple bass, also included as an instrumental, whilst ‘Covenant’ showcases Snow Ghosts’ diversity in other directions with darker trip hop tones and a Tricky-style vocal from Dahlia Black aka Kwesi Darko aka Blue Daisy. But anyway – get this for that Skelton mix!

2013 has been a pretty special year for Houndstooth. This time last year we were staring down the barrel of a daunting release schedule all giddy from the excitement of it but understandably nervous at the same time. It’s all the same energy though – nerves and excitement – and the artists we’ve worked with and released have done more to inspire us and stoke our sense of pride over these past 12 months than anyone or anything else. Crafted from a shared interest of the odd folk nature of Britain and the resultant dark strangeness, Throwing Snow and Augustus Ghost pool their individual inspirations, ideas and styles on ‘A Small Murmuration’, the first full-length album under their collaborative Snow Ghosts moniker.

Throwing Snow, aka Ross Tones, first started working with Augustus Ghost, aka Hannah Cartwright, after she first arrived in England five years ago. Hannah comes from a songwriting background, having previously collaborated with Phaeleh as well as singing in the band Masakichi, while Ross possesses more electronic influences – his work as Throwing Snow has gained plaudits from all sides, manifested most recently through invitations to support Bonobo on his forthcoming tour, as well as Thom Yorke’s Atoms For Peace project. Together, the pair shared a mutual influence of the shadowy elements of folk and metal, and it is through these reference points that Snow Ghosts began to take shape.

They first found an outlet for their music through Black Acre Records in 2011 on the ‘Lost At Sea’ EP, and the pair have spent the subsequent two years compiling their debut album through short bursts of writing. In that time everything was done together, from field recording (everything from desperately hanging a mic out the window to record a thunder storm on ‘And The World Was Gone’, to recording leaves rustling in Tower Hamlets graveyard, to an ancient zither and bowed fretless acoustic bass), to reading the same literature – Mark Z Danielewski’s ‘House of Leaves’ left a particularly strong impression on their shared head-space.

The music itself is brooding and at times imposing, yet sweepingly majestic throughout – Augustus Ghost’s rich vocals balance perfectly on Throwing Snow’s sombre sonic creations, as hints of industry and mechanism are married with the organic, natural world. The album’s title – ‘A Small Murmuration’ – combines Ross’ love of chaos theory and Hannah’s earthy propensity for nature. The theme is reflected in the imagery surrounding the album – the artwork and photographs come from Hannah’s grandfather in the 1930s, and form a special attachment to each of the tracks. Additional illustration was done by Matthew Ellwood, one of Ross’ oldest and closest friends, who also provided the art for the Black Acre EP. The album as a whole feels little need or desire to fit alongside any current trends, instead focusing on a fundamental formula: of close collaboration, shared interests, and strong friendship.
