San Francisco-based artist Christopher Willits first came onto my radar with his video tutorials on Ableton Live — thanks Chris, those were super helpful. From those clips, it was obvious that Willits had a serious passion for music, technology, and video. So it’s not surprising that his latest LP for Ghostly, OPENING, combines those loves into an “immersive audio-visual project.”

Using seven ambient tracks, seven scenes of visuals shot around the world, and seven photographic prints, OPENING follows Willits’ recent production help on Tycho’s Awake (another mega-chill producer on the Ghostly roster) with his own multimedia experience. “There are no actors or dialogue in this film,” explains Willits. “The audience and their perception is the main character, and everyone’s imagination is going to create some meaning that’s relevant to their own experience.” Like stoner TV favorite Planet Earth or the most incredible screensaver you’ve ever dreamed of, OPENING looks to be a meditative trip through the dreamiest moments of Willits’ recent life. His travels, his music, and his cinematic visuals are pretty damn relaxing.

In addition, exclusive content will slowly be released through Willits’ Drip.fm page; more details about the new member-based platform can be found here. Until OPENING drops on September 2, the trailer for the project and “CLEAR” (the second scene/track) can both be watched below. That water looks pretty glassy, dudes.

Francesco Giannico is an italian electroacoustic musician, videoartist and webdesigner. He is co-founder of the Italian Soundscapes Archive (AIPS) and Oak Editions Label. He’s graduated in “Musicology and Musical Heritage” at the University of Lecce with a thesis on “History of film music”.

He published his works for many labels and he collaborated with many artists like: Bruno Dorella, Amy Denio, Kim Cascone, Thollem McDonas, Zac Nelson, Stefan Bonitatibus , Ben Chatwin, Mary Levykina, Anna Aleksandra Waliszewska. Fabio Orsi , Alessio Ballerini.

His musical approach is better described as a cinematic journey which pushes the boundaries of digital media even further by incorporating smooth melodies and gentle textures. More canonical instruments such as guitar and piano are constantly present into Francesco Giannico’s music, within interrupted structures or long and dreaming
sonorous carpets.

During the end of 2010 and the beginning of 2011 he created with Alessio Ballerini the network “Archivio Italiano dei Paesaggio Sonori” to promote and diffuse the soundscapes culture www.archivioitalianopaesaggisonori.it

Thurston Moore wrote (from Sonic Youth): “…Even less jazzic is Folkanization by Francesco Giannico. This young Italian electro-acoustic composer in whose work we can hear tendrils of everything from Luigi Nono to Toru Takemitsu. Filled with odd details, the music is fascinating.”

Hot on the heels of Part 1 comes Polypsilon, Part 2! The second half of the BRIAN-DANCE odyssey is another hour of colorful electronics and bedroom production values. Arguably more diverse than Part 1, with krautrock influenced motorik tracks like “Paul The Pylon”, jungle strains in “Phallusaurus Jox”, a little Boards of Canada peeking through in “Polly Epsilon” and a nod to SAW 85-92 on “P-Boots”. Of course, melodies are still the focus of the material, along with a nice settled in comfort level from working with so many familiar sounds and machines. The whole thing inevitably caves in by the end, and trails off along some long-lost ambient coastline from the depths of my mind. Printed and pressed on a super-limited special edition of 30 copies on white cassette tape, with hand-cut red cardstock J-cards and black text decals. Don’t miss out!

It speaks volumes for how long we’ve been waiting for the debut Brainfeeder album from Mono/Poly that when Flying Lotus first got in touch with him about doing something for the label, it was via Myspace. The wait, though, has been worth it. Specializing in a kind of beat-driven cosmic soundscape which he describes as “electronic-classical-alchemy music,” Mono/Poly aka Charles Dickerson has drawn on the lessons he’s learned from collaborating on last year’s Thundercat album as well as the Flash Bang Grenada hip hop project with Busdriver and Nocando, and made a beautifully realized, endlessly expansive record.

From the first orchestral trills of “Winds of Change” you know you’re in for something special. As the track builds the listener notices not only the content but also the production chops – this is a record which sounds exactly as big, glossy and up front as its creator wants it to. Rebekah Raff adds scintillating harp work to “Transit to the Gold Planet,” but it’s the way Dickerson integrates it and builds on it which is really special. “Ra Rise” sounds like sunbathing in space, Niki Randa’s abstracted topline vocal warming you right through. Title track, “Golden Skies” uses a looping piano riff reminiscent of Bach, Thelonious Monk and Wu Tang on E, all at once, without sounding like any of them. Add sternum- thrumming bass to that and you know exactly what’s what. “Alpha & Omega” does something clever with slowed down d&b licks and tweaked vocal snips. “Empyrean” features Mendee Ichikawa (of the band Free Moral Agents), an ethereal, ghostly presence. “Night Garden” sounds like a drive through the dark streets of an alternate LA. “Euphoria” uses a simple, military-style snare and then twines keyboard lines over it until it’s lifted into the sky. Thundercat joins in on last track, “Gamma,” and adds some perfectly-judged low-end riffing to anchor Dickerson’s keyboard swirls.

Mono/Poly has been a name to watch since his debut, The George Machine, back in 2009. His 2011 EP release for Brainfeeder, Manifestations, was supported by artists as diverse as Radiohead and Erykah Badu and his work on Thundercat’s Apocalypse established once and for all the quality of his productions. With Golden Skies he has laid down a marker to any other “beat maker” out there. Because with a genuine producer with this much talent, everyone else needs to aim a little bit higher – up towards the golden skies.

The fifth volume in the ever-expanding cosmos of Coppice Halifax remixes, Cmx V contains eight tracks that fill your ears with 73 minutes of organic technoid forms and dense ambient forestry. Opening with “Fisstech”, an unreleased track from the Leaf Cloak sessions, the album is off to a bubbly Analog Botany bounce from the start. The remixes that follow vary in sound from the gritty dub of the Textural Being mixes, to the low-end worshipping minimal techno of the Asymmetrical Head and Contemporary Vision mixes. Another unreleased cut, a CH remix of Phasen’s “Syy” from 2010, ascends from the watery depths of the Analog Botany vaults, and finally the whole album gives way to the ambient techno gliding of the Myoplast remix and the beatless Nacht Plank remix, which was an absolute honor to make, as Lee Norris has been one of my musical heroes for years now.

After dipping their toe in with the Coldfish LP, All Inn are returning to the album format once again to present Kamran Sadeghi with the chance to impart a vision of electronic music with a techno framework, although his roots lie in more experimental forms. As such this is a classy set of minimal tracks that place dancefloor demands at the back of the priority list, and instead all manner of textures, sounds, moods and ideas round out a refined production style to a great end. “Follow Up” is a fascinating composition sizzling with subtle details even as it comes on smooth and appealing to the ears, while “Dig Out” constantly mutates with the slither of live drums in amongst the electronics. At every turn this is an album that will delight the mind in entirely original ways, which can never be a bad thing.

Claustro-euphoric techno from New Zealand (now Melbourne-based) Mark Wundercastle with 7 erudite and extremely heavy tracks tinged by early 00s futurist vibes. Tech paranoia dissolves and inverts techno’s dark bias into an uplifting and very deep journey of retroactive, pure reality.

Now available at Experimedia.net.* Recollection GRM presents computer works from French composer Jean-Claude Risset. “Sud” (1985): This work was commissioned by the French Ministry of Culture, from a project initiated by the GRM, where it was produced circa 1984-1985. The piece mainly uses sounds recorded in the Massif des Calanques, south of Marseille, as well as sounds synthesized via a computer (again in Marseille). These sounds were then treated via another computer at the GRM. The natural and synthetic sounds are first presented separately. Along the piece, they increasingly merge, through mixing and processing. Thus real bird songs, as well as synthetic bird-like or insect-like sounds, have been spatialized. In the third movement, the filtering of birds’ caws first appears as a colored echo, later as a genuine bird’s “raga” using the defective scale. The origin of the many sounds deduced from the germinal material can be ascribed to a “family tree” displaying the sonic proliferation and resembling a rhizome. (J-C. R.) “Mutations” (1977): Piece for a two-track tape, computer-synthesized in 1968 at the Bell Laboratories. Commissioned by the GRM and premiered at the Moderna Museet in Stockholm in 1970. This work attempts to explore (particularly within the harmonic order) some of the possibilities offered by the computer to compose at the very level of sound — to compose sound itself, so to speak. The title refers to the gradual changes that occur throughout the piece, including the shift from a range of discontinuous heights to continuous frequency variations. (J-C. R.) “Computer Suite from Little Boy” (1968): This piece, composed in 1968, is one of the first significant works entirely produced via a computer: all sounds were synthesized using the MUSIC V program. The piece features several experiments on Sounds Synthesis I produced between 1964 and 1968, while working with Max Mathews at the Bell Laboratories. (J-C. R.)
