Not only has Muslimgauze’s work survived the death of Bryn Jones, so have his working methods; with so much worthwhile material still in the vaults and much of it having little in the way of information or context left by the artist upon his untimely passing, recent reissues and new releases have seen Staalplaat going largely by the way the working tapes were originally organized.

Here we have an excellent example of the perils and rewards of that approach; eight mixes, just over an hour, of some of the dubbiest, most spacious material Jones ever put to tape. The tracks collected on Un-used Re-Mix’s 1994-1995, the newest release in Staalplaat’s Muslimgauze Archive series, are too good to leave collecting dust, but Jones never got around to organizing or even titling them (except, perhaps, inside of his own head). The truly diligent might be able to track down the source for some of these tracks after hours poring over the rest of
Muslimgauze’s vast discography, but no such trainspotting is needed to appreciate the smeared, haunting vocal and hand percussion of the third track, or the ominously rattling, echoing sixth track, or the heavy organ overlay that brings the last track as close to showgaze as Muslimgauze ever came.

So much of Jones’ work evokes the sounds and atmospheres of the Middle East, India, and other points further south than his own Manchester environs; the remixes here bring a bit of that northern chill into the veins of these productions, resulting in an album that sometimes feels like Muslimgauze venturing into outer space. Without the political context that Jones no doubt intended for these tracks, we’re left only with the actual sound, a sound that continues to retain its power and striking individuality.”

Arch-texturologist Mick Chillage sidesteps ambient phraseology to present on Anodize his new contemporary electro project, The Shape, every bit as thrilling and energizing as Dopplereffekt, John Carpenter & Alan Howarth, Mr. Velcro Fastener and Anthony Rother. Unlike his colleagues, Chillage manages to tweak the formula a turn or two, resulting in some nimble synth parabolas riding atop steely, corkscrew rhythms.

Irish electronic musician Chillage should be no stranger to followers of Anodize. His presence has not only graced the label via last year’s stunning Autumn of Communion 2 project (in collaboration with Lee Anthony Norris), but also this month’s excellent ambient travelogue “Pixels”, already sold out and now the stuff of collectors’ shelves and fortunate enthusiasts worldwide.

The Shape is a unique work in Chillage’s canon, however, displaying a markedly different musical persona, one wholly enamored with the taut percussive vortices of classic electro. Where others bow mercilessly to the tyranny of the beat, Chillage one-ups the game: the grand and grimy cinema audio verité of Carpenter and Howarth’s synth fantasias loom large in Chillage’s visor, but uninterested in mere copyism, The Shape gnarls his vintage electronics into a whiplash frenzy bent to its own pretzel logic.

Scuba Death is Ricardo Donoso’s alter ego. With more of a focus on analog sound, percussion, sampling, and location recordings, there is an organic undercurrent on Scuba Death recordings that isn’t as prevalent in his solo work. This music is rich in atmosphere while still tethered to the deeper ideas that Donoso often explores in his work. Treatises on fear and death­anxiety, the underlining thematic framework for the project, run rampant throughout these claustrophobic electronic passages, and teeter on the edge of being oppressive.

Nitrogen Narcosis marks the first full length and strongest statement in the Scuba Death repertoire after the privately issued, ruthless ‘Demon Seed’ twelve inch back in 2011. The album alternates between surprising lethargic dance inflections all nestled between 75 & 100 bpm, the normal resting heart rate for adults, and the more conceptual, numbness­inducing pieces like “50­-70 Meters” and “Nociception.” Sequencing plays an integral role on Nitrogen Narcosis as the listener is suddenly thrust into the darkest reaches of the ocean after dark alley grooves are sucked into an aquatic abyss.

For a project named after Donoso’s near­drowning experience in the South Atlantic when he was younger, there’s an impressive amount of reflection & vulnerability present – the field recordings that permeate throughout the album were captured at the same location the undertow caught hold of him that bright Summer day 20 years prior. An inner battle between paranoia and euphoria is played out in well­conceived, precision sonics on Nitrogen Narcosis as Donoso reminds us to look back, break through the surface and go deeper.

Ricardo Donoso’s solo work speaks for itself, but with this new chapter comes new questions and considerations. Scuba Death is enigmatic to a fault and all the better for it.

Initially revealed in an extensive interview in this month’s issue of The Wire, PAN have now outlined full details of KOCH, the next album from UK-based experimental producer Lee Gamble who provided two of the label’s most widely-acclaimed records in Diversions 1994-1996 and Dutch Tvashar Plumes. Both those records played extensively with ideas of musical memory, with Diversions taking old jungle cassettes and subjecting them to extreme digital processing, and Dutch Tvashar Plumes providing 10 spectres of his own musical ideas.

According to a press release from PAN, Gamble’s next LP will take the form of a double album, and this time sees him “constructing a future after time spent deconstructing the past,” diving “even deeper to reveal a singular and intimate musical vantage point, shifting to approaching music as projection, state, hallucination, an other place.” In an interview with Resident Advisor, Gamble elaborated on the LP, explaining that KOCH is made of material made throughout the past few years, and is partly an attempt to create “a record that can be a home listening experience and one that I can take out to places like Berghain,” but that also continues his interest in “hallucination, memory, phantasm, deconstruction.” The album will be preceded by an EP called Kuang to be released on PAN next month

Leaving Records have announced details of Human Voice, the forthcoming LP from Dntel, AKA Jimmy Tamborello.

Tamborello is best known as the producer for The Postal Service and vocalists and songwriters like Baths and Mia Doi Todd. Human Voice, his seventh full-length as Dntel, is an eight-track LP of sun-drenched, deconstructed pop that follows 2012’s Aimlessness, which landed on DJ Koze’s Pampa Records. The title is a nod to the ability of machines to communicate meanings and messages in much the same way as the human voice.

The album will also come with a bonus cassette, Human Voice Outtakes, that includes a recording of Dntel’s live set from the Leaving Records-curated edition of Boiler Room in LA. You can listen to “If I Stay a Minute” below.

If anyone can knock out a techno LP of 25 quality big room club tools it’s Developer. The Modularz boss is one of the few producers to reliably release a constant stream of booming 909 sounds without losing a sense of artistic character through oversaturation. For the DJ, In Pure Form is like a box of bullets: each track is deadly as the next. All productions vary between reverb-soaked drum patterns and distorted bell sequences to grittier productions flexing between music you’d expect from Sandwell District, LB Dub Corp and Oscar Mulero’s Pole Group. Arm yourself with some Developer techno.

The title Shelter describes the listener’s perception and subsequent emotional response to a collection of sounds and motifs. If Moiré’s past releases provided fragments of his overall concept, Shelter highlights his vision in its entirety, bringing themes from his earlier productions together with newer elements to form a complete concept. It finds Moiré experimenting outside traditional patterns to create something unexpected and raw, dynamic yet immediate, inciting us to engage in the experience both on a musical and physical level.

Perceptual experience does not necessarily confirm individual sounds, as much as “Moiré” does not appear when looking at individual lines. It’s really about the combination and interaction of the minutiae that make the whole… the sum of the parts. What is important is how we perceive the resulting effect in the grey area or “twilight zone” materialising in the overlap between the lines or sounds in this case.

Immersion into Shelter creates a parallel situation between artist and listener, with one exploring the confines of his medium and the other interpreting the output, essentially resulting in an intensive and introspective experience. Simply put, Moiré is creating something personal and honest, and inviting others to get lost in the patterns.

The/Das are a Berlin electronic music duo made up of Fabian Fenk and Anton K who previously released the ‘Speak Your Mind Speak’ EP last year, which displayed their potential as great, icy electronic craftsmen. This year they release full length ‘Freezer’ via Sinnbus, and the album sees their luminous spark grow.

Starting off the album we have ‘My Made Up Spook’ which is a strong number with ghostly ambient synths that make Jon Hopkins spring to mind. Mixed in with moody, but quite poppy modern R&B vocals, it quite often catches you off guard. Follower ‘(Under) Miami Waters’ is even more minimal but effectively soothing with long, occasionally high, notes reminiscent of Aphex Twin on one of his more melodic songs. ‘Receiver’ feels like it’s on the laid-back side of Daft Punk’s with the light, peaceful synths, and the added brooding female vocals are full of emotion and are incredibly moving. ‘Operation Of Chance’ marks an interesting change of tune in the album having more of a late 70s electronic vibe, similar to Kraftwerk or ‘Low’ era David Bowie, but keeps in the flow of the record with the modern vocals and production.

The album ends with the only two weak tracks on the album, ‘Somebody’ and ‘Freezer’. ‘Somebody’ is poor with its lifeless piano keys and an unimaginative drum beat, while ‘Freezer’ is a several minute long icy number that is totally void of heart and soul, which minimal music needs if it’s going to be impressive.

For the most part, this is a striking album of soulful vocals with the occasional curveball here and there to keep you interested, such as the sudden throwback to the 70’s on ‘Operation Of Chance’. The two bad songs that close the album weaken it considerably, but aside from that, this is a great album that is definitely worth your time.

Having provided one of 2012′s most compelling albums in the form of Order of Noise, Bristol-based Seb Gainsborough has announced his eagerly awaited return to the album format under the Vessel moniker with Punish, Honey, to be released on Tri Angle in September. While his previous efforts have been resolutely electronic in their makeup, a press release explains that Punish, Honey saw Gainsboroough wishing to move away from “archetypal electronic sounds” to create something more organic, constructing his own instrumentation including flutes made of bike frames, sheet metal percussion and harmonic guitars.

As well as coinciding with his interest in organic sounds, particularly “how the physical body has a direct effect on the nature of the sound, whether it be harsh or pure, messy, violent, seductive, or strange,” the album also sees Gainsborough supposedly grappling with notions of national identity, and posing the question: “What does ‘Englishness’ in music really mean?”
