Amazingly, the first (and previously only) installment of Leftroom’s Don’t Be Leftout series was released way back in 2007. That time, it was simply Matt Tolfrey at the controls; here, he joins forces with Visionquest regular Ryan Crosson for a typically deep, intoxicating, tech-tinged mix-up. Interestingly, every track is exclusive to the compilation, with previously unheard originals from Huxley, Gavin Herlihy and H-Foundation being joined by a slew of brand new remixes and re-edits from Mr Fingers, Matt Tolfrey and Ryan Crosson. As a result, there’s a fluid freshness to Don’t Be Leftout that’s hard to deny. It is, to put it bluntly, an impressively intoxicating journey.

Never afraid of pushing boundaries, the forward thinking Leftroom camp indulge their eclectic side with a with a remix package of an exciting London based band, Lois & The Love. Released in late 2012, ‘Dark Serenade/ Rabbit Hole’ was the band’s debut release and picked up plaudits from key tastemakers outlets, including The Guardian and Clash Music, who drew comparisons to icons including PJ Harvey, Nick Cave and Janis Joplin. Providing remixes are a crop of seasoned producers, delivering a variety of interpretations… Up first label boss Matt Tolfrey’s dubbed out remix hones in on a single vocal phrase and, whilst using subtle melodies and modulated effects to create a dark yet dreamy atmosphere. Rising London producer/ DJ Alexis Raphael imparts what is fast becoming his trademark deep house spin on ‘Dark Serenade’ turning in a full bodied house affair that has already received Radio 1 plays courtesy of B. Traits. House music maestro Phil Asher turns in a jaunty, Afro beat-tinged take on ‘Rabbit Hole’ that showcases lead singer Lois Winstone’s sassy vocal in all its glory. Inspired by LCD Soundsystem, Asher’s mix keeps it rocky but will certainly resonate with the dance floor. Rounding off the package Marc Ashken provides a typically skewed interpretation on the mix of ‘Dark Serenade’ that retains the drama and atmosphere of the original whilst imparting sharp processing on its sonic make up. Asken’s mix builds over its 3 and half minute before launching into full flow in the final third. An interesting remix package of an exciting new band, delivered from one of house music’s most consistent labels. Lois & The Love’s remix package is out mid-March on Leftroom Limited.

Chicago’s Kate Simko is one of recent years USA’s most accomplished electronic music talents – a genuine music love who commands equal respect behind the decks, the mixing desk and the keyboard.

Having chalked up releases for Hello?Repeat, Supplement Facts and Spectral Sound as well as a debut LP for the latter’s parent imprint, Ghostly International, Simko’s talents have been widely noted while recent releases and a live show alongside Tevo Howard as PolyRhythmic have cemented an already cast-iron reputation.

‘Go On Then’ in original form is a textbook example of subtlety, with rich yet unobtrusive production and flickering melodies giving way to Jem Cooke’s earthy vocal and songwriting talents. Ian Pooley, a true house-music master, builds on the original’s uncluttered aesthetic with an unctuous bassline-driven version that gently wraps itself in cossetting melodies before opening up at just the right moments. It’s these melodies that are allowed to run riot in Pooley’s dub, making for an intensely absorbing listen.

Franck Roger treads a heavier, MAW dub styled, path with his Mix version, where clattering percussion and earthquake bottom end provides a zippy undercurrent for a heady mix of warped vocal effects and gritty synths while his dub mix pushes a more urgent, harder backbone through the tripped out textures.

The ascendant Blond:ish close the package with a sub-aquatic lesson in low-end theory where every element has to have it’s own melody, space and counterpoint and deep house is a futurist artform.

Set up to showcase upcoming talent, Left’d has steadily become, alongside Leftroom and Leftroom Ltd, a must check imprint. Musically, the imprint has explored many of the strands of modern house music while steadily building an impressive list of supporters.

‘Year End’ is the first of the new format of Left’d releases where the single format becomes an Extended Extended Player, making for a weighty, quarterly package of treats.

In ‘Year End’ there’s a wide range of house leanings, from smooth modern deep house from Jammhot! and Jaimer Vincentie to late night, tripped out affairs from Sam Russo & Tom Web and No Dial Tone. Peak time isn’t ignored either, with punchy tackle coming in from Pierre Codarin and Anthonio Del Prete & Alex Magno.

As Left’d exists as a proving ground for future Leftroom artists, it certainly looks like 2013 will bright for the London-based imprint.
