Cola & Jimmu, AKA the husband-wife duo of Nicole Willis and Jimi Tenor, have revealed details of their next album, I Give You My Love And Devotion.

The pair’s musical partnership stretches back some 14 years. (Willis appeared on “Call Of The Wild,” which featured on Tenor’s 2000 album for Warp Records, Out Of Nowhere). I Give You My Love And Devotion serves as a follow-up to the most recent Cola & Jimmu LP, Enigmatic, which came out in 2013. As with that record, it arrives via the duo’s own label, Herakles Records.

I Give You My Love And Devotion treads the terrain both artists are associated with, fusing elements of funk, jazz and house. A press release tells us to expect “plenty of string pads, flutes and flute pads,” with “beats procured from the vintage gear” of Finnish dance music staple Jori Hulkkonen.

It is time for another release from our favorite Scottish artist Nick Dow. He has attracted remixes from the Traum family for his new release. We are happy to have Microtrauma back on board as well as French duo We Need Cracks. The other four artists are contributors on the Tour De Traum series and have all thrown their talent onto the originals.The originals, yes they are a bit more moody compared to the energetic last release. Nick lets the melodies swell and slumber a light thunder stroking his trax. And Yes… we like that attitude… while having to fight with 30 degrees here in the Traum office. That applies to “Pocket Harmony”, a track that draws on synths similar to “Insect Parade” but its overall feel is much more soothing, heart warming and keeps the fire burning for us. Is there a cat miaowing? A soulful track by Nick Dow! The title “Time To Dry” definitely correlates with its music showing weightiness but also moments of lightness, interacting with each other in a nice way. In the end this makes it a great mystic track with a super folkloristic edge to it. “Leap” is the most electronic downbeat track of Nick Dow so far and a nice grinding melancholic tune, with wailing and crawling synth sounds and heavy baselines. This one is for all of you who like the early Aphex Twin sound! Wonderful! Microtrauma have remixed “The Insect Parade” in a great way. The remix begins with blurred, dubbed out angel like sounds and then breaks down. What happens then can only be described as a second current of electricity joining the previous one. Turning the track upside down inserting the original synth sound but keeping it rather atmospheric and choosing other sounds as leading ones. All this is quite unbelievable and sounds as if it could never work… but it does. This is a great epos of music and we are happy to have them back. French duo We Need Cracks who have just recently released a fabulous release with Traum, have twisted “The Insect Parade” and have clad it in a glitter disco jacket fused with their own means of melancholy. Sounds great… is great. “Before The Feast” was remixed by Scottish soul mates Ariose who keep a nice understatement embroidered with an acoustic clattering, angel voices and a heavy grinding baseline. Hubert Kirchner has remixed the super dynamic peak time track “Armour Plated” into a deep sonic and spheric rocker using superb acoustics in the mix. This will sound great on a big PA for sure. Soulspace remix of “Armour Plated” holds the great aura of early Playhouse releases, which we always liked here at Traum. So we are great fans of this deep house interpretation! Macajey has remixed “Before The Feast” into a 119 BPM super day time crawler. A great lush feeling, so funky and gentle it melts in your ears. An enchanting remix from Tour De Traum participant Macajey.

Trip-hop innovator Tricky has announced his 11th album, Adrian Thaws. That’s the cover art above. It’s out September 8 via his False Idols label, and follows 2013’s False Idols. It was recorded at Tricky’s home studio in London, and is, technically, a self-titled record. (Tricky’s birth name is Adrian Thaws.)
“I suppose this is my club/hip hop album,” he said in a press release. “I’ve only heard my music a few times in a club but I grew up in clubs from when I was 14: blues parties, hip hop clubs, a few raves. I’m not known for doing club music but this album has some club tracks on it – well, what I would consider club music.” (The press release also notes that the album is meant to be played loud.)
Additionally, he’s shared a song from the album, “Nicotine Love”, which features singer Francesca Belmonte. Listen to it below. Mykki Blanco, Tirzah, and Blue Daisy also appear on the album.

In April, Simian Mobile Disco trekked out to the Southern California desert, taking with them their new live set up – two modular synths, two sequencers, and a mixer. Over a period of three days, they jammed and rehearsed in the desert, culminating in a one off sold out live show at Pappy & Harriet’s, Pioneertown, allowing 900 fans to witness part of the recording process.

Those sessions, taped under the desert sky, became the basis for their brand new album / live project “Whorl”. Now, after completing mixing and mastering, they are pleased to announce that the final studio album will be released through Anti- Records (Tom Waits, Kate Bush) on September the 9th.

Physical distances are there for all to see, but the longer, seemingly insurmountable distances are, to outside eyes, invisible. They linger in the silent gaps, in the deadened pause, afflicting two lovers with its rose-scented disease. The distance hurts because it’s close to the heart, and yet the relationship finds itself exiled to the soul’s Sahara. In the physical world, no distance like it is known; it would be futile, impossible even, to get a true reading.

A break-up, a failing friendship or a long running feud are all scented with the same poison, creating dissonant distances around the world. It can rip a relationship apart, beyond saving. A History of Distance reflects this struggle in a world where, despite good intentions and diplomatic efforts, conflict is rife. Long distance relationships can work, but they require some serious work, and the percentages don’t look good. A phone call can’t replace a hug. Distances are subjective; Paris is in another country, another continent, yet from this island it’s only a couple of hours away via the channel tunnel or just 40 minutes away in the air. On the coast of south east England, you can see lights hovering, with signs of people, of European civilization, on the other side. It’s so tantalizingly close, yet so far away.

Sure, bvdub is prolific. He’s appeared more regularly than the word “shark” has on the shockingly bad yet highly watchable movies that appear on the Syfy channel. bvdub takes us across calm seas, without a sharknado or a ghost shark in sight, sailing across the deep blue on serene synths. Van Wey’s music gives you an instant high. The synths are beautiful, but they’re shot through with sad feelings; seeing her smile is a beautiful thing, but when it’s for the last time you can’t help but feel your heart deflating.

Van Wey’s music is an uncharted place, a Bermuda triangle that reels us inside, somewhere between paradise and mournful longing. We all pass through. Some people remain lost, trapped in the blackened murk of their personal, submerged thoughts; sad shipwrecks that bulge with the detritus of dreams that, for one reason or another, never worked out. The atmosphere pulls and tugs, unable to let go, begging her to come near. The male vocal swirls beside the female vocal in an opaque dance of courtship, but it is hazy, like a prom night washed of its memory by a fountain of punch. The usual rhythmic backbone is as strong as ever, but as we’ve seen in the past, it can take up to 10 minutes before the gates open and we fly without wings. Two distinct elements – the padded beats and the golden harmony – become one, both crazy and cool.

Watery synths send the listener to cloud nine, only to dump a desperate vocal amid the white, fluffy clouds, bringing the atmosphere down until it crashes into the hopelessness of the gutter. Van Wey’s subtle melancholy has been around for a while, but in the past it’s been masked by the high BPM. On A History Of Distance, what had once held the anguish back has now disappeared, and not even the skip of a garage-inflected beat can jolt the music out of its lull, pluck it from this pretty thorn of sadness. The padded beat, instead of pushing the music through, is a wall that stops us from the promise of love. We lie on either side, palms touching against its great divide. Separation hurts. Lost looped lyrics flutter in the light, swirling halfheartedly, facing a seemingly dead end. Tunnels and airports connect millions of people, but it can’t connect us. The coda, “A History of Distance”, attempts to carry on, its heavy breaks eventually arriving to bring some kind of acceptance, some kind of first aid, with its kindly resolution; you poured out the sunshine when it began to rain.

Don’t let the music’s beauty fool you – she screams at the way of things, at the gap between the two lovers, between you and me. It leaves us as ghosts; ghosts of what we once were. Now, all that’s left is a tree without its leaves. bvdub stretches out his music magestically, the harmony swaying and then tearing in an infinite war between the palpable tension and the relief of the release. The vacant branch stretches out its arm, calling out across the distance, a crying statue that can’t grasp the dream.; it’s rooted to the ground. bvdub’s music has always had a touch of euphoria, a phoenix rising, but his music has a sensitive side, too. After all, Brock Van Wey’s home in China is a long way from America.
