Moonlit lounge laments out of a North Vancouver houseboat from Evelyn Mason and Olivia Meek aka Evy Jane and Regular Fantasy. Bobo Eyes is an ultra chill collaboration of varied fidelity using synthesizers, drum machines and vocals, and though the textures range from lightly scuffed to crystal clear, the mood is always fixed on closeness.

“Midnight Pearl” looks towards a handful of classic genre moves in disco and pop with eyes on some more dancefloor-based signifiers; oil diffused techno feelings run underneath dreamdrenched vocals into uniquely cosmic homemade ballads like “Do U Miss Me (Rainstick Mix)”. The flipside in terms of space is the more low-tech “Think Str8 (Can’t Do It) [Cellphone Manicure Mix]” where lo-fi Casio vibes meet dual distant vocals.

The colder-edged disco tinge to “Air Sign (Aquarius Mix)” has a similarly bittersweet chorus/verse dynamic to “Mystery Girl” with its steady four-four base. “Bobo Head (Radio Mix)” fades in and out of blissed out and casually repeated vocals atop meandering, positive synth melodies.

Specifically designed for tape, Bobo Eyes gaze into romance-heavy past greats of disco/pop and experimental bedroom Casio night moves all inside the safety net of the Bobo bubble.

One of the most intriguing artists on the Hospital Productions roster, Lussuria came to prominence with the release of three tapes as part of the ‘American Babylon’ series in 2012 which were eventually compiled into a double vinyl edition last year. His opiated atmospheres brought together the ritualistic appeal of late ‘70s and early ‘80s Italian industrial music crossed with the claustrophobia of early material from The Cure and the decadent, voyeuristic compulsion of Pasolini flicks so enamoured by Coil.

Having been in the works through late 2013 and in post-production for several months since, ‘Industriale Illuminato’ is in some respects the first release by Lussuria conceived as a standalone album, and is perhaps his most unique, unsettling body of work to date. Inspired by Deconstructionism and an overriding sense of anxiety, the album revolves around the dislocated narrative of album opener ‘Boneblack’, a dense and evocative fade into shadowy realms inspired by composer Giacinto Scelsi and the enigmatic mind-tricks of Alain Resnais’ ‘Last Year at Marienbad’.

‘Petra Marina’ sees Lussuria use real drum sounds alongside electronic ones for the first time, layered through with odd, foreboding drones constructed out of handmade Japanese music boxes, feedback manipulation and mangled tape loops which together sound like an industrial, shadowy counterpart to the hazy nostalgia of Boards of Canada.

‘Venus In Retrograde’ was inspired by and evokes the paranoid narrative of Francis Ford Coppola’s ‘The Conversation’, making use of snatches of barely tangible dialogue to form an unnerving backdrop, before ‘Breath Of Cinder’ brings the first half of the album to a close with field recordings made in deepest provincial France overlaid with a detached narrative evoking that cold, abandoned landscape.

The second half of the album takes us further into this airless environment, the intriguing widescreen ambience of ‘Eyes Of The World’ offset by the percussive rattling and decimated 3 pinch harmonics of ‘Angelshare’, while ‘Wind Carries Soot’ recalls the aggression of Mika Vainio sedated and tamed into an altogether more narcotic kind of beast, before ‘Art Of Veins’ closes the album with a mangled and inverted message – like some kind of Satanic directive embedded for posterity.

Not only has Muslimgauze’s work survived the death of Bryn Jones, so have his working methods; with so much worthwhile material still in the vaults and much of it having little in the way of information or context left by the artist upon his untimely passing, recent reissues and new releases have seen Staalplaat going largely by the way the working tapes were originally organized.

Here we have an excellent example of the perils and rewards of that approach; eight mixes, just over an hour, of some of the dubbiest, most spacious material Jones ever put to tape. The tracks collected on Un-used Re-Mix’s 1994-1995, the newest release in Staalplaat’s Muslimgauze Archive series, are too good to leave collecting dust, but Jones never got around to organizing or even titling them (except, perhaps, inside of his own head). The truly diligent might be able to track down the source for some of these tracks after hours poring over the rest of
Muslimgauze’s vast discography, but no such trainspotting is needed to appreciate the smeared, haunting vocal and hand percussion of the third track, or the ominously rattling, echoing sixth track, or the heavy organ overlay that brings the last track as close to showgaze as Muslimgauze ever came.

So much of Jones’ work evokes the sounds and atmospheres of the Middle East, India, and other points further south than his own Manchester environs; the remixes here bring a bit of that northern chill into the veins of these productions, resulting in an album that sometimes feels like Muslimgauze venturing into outer space. Without the political context that Jones no doubt intended for these tracks, we’re left only with the actual sound, a sound that continues to retain its power and striking individuality.”

Arch-texturologist Mick Chillage sidesteps ambient phraseology to present on Anodize his new contemporary electro project, The Shape, every bit as thrilling and energizing as Dopplereffekt, John Carpenter & Alan Howarth, Mr. Velcro Fastener and Anthony Rother. Unlike his colleagues, Chillage manages to tweak the formula a turn or two, resulting in some nimble synth parabolas riding atop steely, corkscrew rhythms.

Irish electronic musician Chillage should be no stranger to followers of Anodize. His presence has not only graced the label via last year’s stunning Autumn of Communion 2 project (in collaboration with Lee Anthony Norris), but also this month’s excellent ambient travelogue “Pixels”, already sold out and now the stuff of collectors’ shelves and fortunate enthusiasts worldwide.

The Shape is a unique work in Chillage’s canon, however, displaying a markedly different musical persona, one wholly enamored with the taut percussive vortices of classic electro. Where others bow mercilessly to the tyranny of the beat, Chillage one-ups the game: the grand and grimy cinema audio verité of Carpenter and Howarth’s synth fantasias loom large in Chillage’s visor, but uninterested in mere copyism, The Shape gnarls his vintage electronics into a whiplash frenzy bent to its own pretzel logic.

Scuba Death is Ricardo Donoso’s alter ego. With more of a focus on analog sound, percussion, sampling, and location recordings, there is an organic undercurrent on Scuba Death recordings that isn’t as prevalent in his solo work. This music is rich in atmosphere while still tethered to the deeper ideas that Donoso often explores in his work. Treatises on fear and death­anxiety, the underlining thematic framework for the project, run rampant throughout these claustrophobic electronic passages, and teeter on the edge of being oppressive.

Nitrogen Narcosis marks the first full length and strongest statement in the Scuba Death repertoire after the privately issued, ruthless ‘Demon Seed’ twelve inch back in 2011. The album alternates between surprising lethargic dance inflections all nestled between 75 & 100 bpm, the normal resting heart rate for adults, and the more conceptual, numbness­inducing pieces like “50­-70 Meters” and “Nociception.” Sequencing plays an integral role on Nitrogen Narcosis as the listener is suddenly thrust into the darkest reaches of the ocean after dark alley grooves are sucked into an aquatic abyss.

For a project named after Donoso’s near­drowning experience in the South Atlantic when he was younger, there’s an impressive amount of reflection & vulnerability present – the field recordings that permeate throughout the album were captured at the same location the undertow caught hold of him that bright Summer day 20 years prior. An inner battle between paranoia and euphoria is played out in well­conceived, precision sonics on Nitrogen Narcosis as Donoso reminds us to look back, break through the surface and go deeper.

Ricardo Donoso’s solo work speaks for itself, but with this new chapter comes new questions and considerations. Scuba Death is enigmatic to a fault and all the better for it.
