Onkalo (‘hiding place’) is the name of the spent nuclear fuel repository currently under construction in Finland to house hazardous nuclear waste. It is designed to last a minimum of 100,000 years – a scale of time unimaginable when the oldest surviving man made structures have endured not even a tenth of that time. The human species as we know it is thought to have existed for approximately 100,000 years – is it possible for humankind to build something that will endure a timescale that vast again? And what will be left to uncover it if it does so?

Taking this as a starting point, Petrels second album draws on a fascination with how we deal with what is left over, both physically and mentally. With this thread running through Onkalo, the album also takes inspiration from speculative science, immense time scales, retro-futurism, personal history, and how the post-war optimism of the dawn of the atomic age has come up against a more uncertain vision of the future.

Since Type’s reissue of his Black Mill Tapes last year, PCA has had praise coming from all angles: whether it’s for his slick-but-sleazy, Carl Craigian lustre, the BoC-like melodic hooks, or his beautifully full bodied analogue production; he’s really hit a collective soft spot dead on. We were keen to hear him attempt something slightly more club-wise, and, et voila, we now have Superstitious Century. Opener “Vorticism” is a real peach, steeped in nostalgia for early ’90s UK house with the rosy-cheeked, wide-eyed essence of Smokebelch and classic AFX (it almost sounds like something off the first Analogue Bubblebath EP) distilled to a spine-tingling brew, and neatly contrasting with the subtle, slo-mo balearic build of “Zero Centre” to complete the A-side. Turn her over for the extended and seductively oily, oriental chug of “Wasted Evolution”, which has become a bit of an anthem at our monthly Haxan gatherings, and there’s the blissed out arpeggios of “End of all Eras” to bring us safely in to port, like some lost outtake off Boards of Canada’s Music Has the Right to Children.

Andrea Parker’s Touching Bass is back! And for its comeback release they present Luke Walker’s Quinoline Yellow. Experimental, entertaining and full of character, at points he sounds like Squarepusher underwater (“The Recital Of Dolwen Fields”). At others he comes across more like Radioactiveman on sedatives (“Congregation”). Perfumes is a massive and exhaustively comprehensive collection of music written for now-extinct EPs, splits and compilations, as well as rare and unreleased material from the Milieu Music vaults. 8 discs, each one a meticulously arranged and sequenced album, bearing a vivid and tangential account of my experimental and drone work for the guitar (among other instruments) since 2005. Every piece has been carefully retrieved from the master tapes and remastered especially for this collection, and collectors will note the presence of many unreleased items in the set. A mindbending and essential release for any fan of my drone work or of experimental music in general – this is something you should buy and digest over a week off with either headphones or high fidelity audio systems with good low-frequency output.

To further add to the significance of this collection, Perfumes is being released to herald the arrival of the fabled SUN-DAY set – a 24-hour work of ambient experimentalism that will be released one hour per month over the course of the next two years, starting in May 2013. Sun-Day was conceptualized in 2004 and recording work on the project has been in progress ever since. More information about Sun-Day will appear online in May.

Speedy J and Lucy have revealed details of their new collaborative project, Zeitgeber, with a self-titled album due for release in June.

The project links together two well-known purveyors of experimentally-tinged techno. Speedy J, real name Jochem Paap, is a veteran producer whose celebrated career stretches back more than two decades. Lucy, AKA Luca Mortellaro, has gained relatively more recent renown as the mind behind Stroboscopic Artefacts, which is where Zeitgeber will come out.

According to a press release, Zeitgeber—the term translates loosely from German to “synchronizer”—has been in the works for 18 months, and it sees the duo “freed of dancefloor considerations” and focused on more abstract sound design. While Stroboscopic Artefacts has already issued full-length albums from Lucy himself as well as Xhin and Dadub, this one will be the first available on 2xLP vinyl (instead of CD), along with the usual digital formats. Like the rest of the label’s output, Dadub will handle mastering duties.

Yes, yes, we know what you’re thinking. It’s a live album, and when are those ever very exciting? But just remember that they really can be, and trust us when we say that this one really, truly is. Like a modern day Live at Leeds, like the benevolent, neon twin of Live Evil, Jaga Jazzist’s wondrous new record is just that; a brilliant album on its own terms. It’s a psychedelic Bond soundtrack twisting and turning from the stage, propelling the listener forward on an epic emotional voyage. At times it seems to explode from the speakers in pure, exuberant colour, making you wonder if you’ve recently developed synesthesia. It moves with unrestrained ease from quiet reflection to cinematic, widescreen thunder, from Sound of Music pastoral joy to pulsing jazz chase sequences… and it makes you wonder why more of the music you hear isn’t quite so completely affecting.

Jaga Jazzist had long wanted to work with an orchestra, and when the British radio DJ Fiona Talkington introduced them to the Britten Sinfonia, they leapt at the chance to collaborate. The Barbican’s Chris Sharp promised to stage the results, and the team set about writing the work from scratch. Jaga wanted to make each musician feel like a central part of the performance, and this philosophy paid off in full. The music is full of exuberance and passion, each player becoming an equal part of a startlingly purposeful hive-mind.

Jaga have always taken a rigorous approach to their art, and they wanted to use the opportunity afforded by the album to push their own creativity forward. As such, they broke new ground personally. “Mathias’ trumpet solo on ‘Bananfluer Overalt’ is probably my favourite moment on the album,” says the group’s writer and creative driving force Lars Horntveth. “He really shines here and has the space and time to improvise in a way he hasn’t been able to do before with Jaga alone.”

That says a lot about this brilliant, unique record. It’s not often that an album comes along that offers so much. Its quieter moments could equal Shostakovich’s explorations of mortality, its full throttle thrusts match the visceral thrill of any young guitar band. We’d suggest that you won’t be disappointed in a listen, and that it might just change your day for the better.

Future Fusion is the killer debut set from Streetwalker, the collaborative project of White Car’s Elon Katz and Beau Wanzer of Mutant Beat Dance/LIES fame. The DIY ethos of primitive Chicago house seeps into the pair’s work as Streetwalker, with the material that forms Future Fusion recorded live in one take. This was subsequently recorded without any overdubs or MIDI to one inch tape, with the resultant six tracks resonating with a loose, primal energy. Sitting uneasily between house, industrial, synth-pop and EBM, Future Fusion is one of those records that you simply cannot second guess. This being a Cititrax release, the presentation is second to none too, with some superb illustration work from the well respected graphic artists Spencer Longo, but in truth the music should be the real focus of attention here.
