“When I first began this project twenty eight months ago, I had no idea the end result would look the way it does today. I had obviously a goal in mind, goal which, I am proud to say, I have completely forgotten as the enterprise gained in importance. Nonetheless, I did feel as though I was making progress in some soon to be defined direction. At this level, it wasn’t necessary that my objective was clear. A gut. My gut was pushing me to spit out this… this…tape. Hence the name. Most of the time, I didn’t even know what was going on. The tape is a really nice tape to listen to while you’re, say, running in the park. Just put it in your cassette player and go run outside. You can run in your apartment too if it is big enough but you might as well go outside, if it’s nice enough. You can also listen to it when you are cooking or washing the dishes. Don’t play it, like, if you are a spa owner. That is bad publicity and I can sue for that. I will be very serious with that, don’t play it at your local spa please. Thank you.”

With ‘My Love Is A Bulldozer’, Venetian Snares first new album since 2010’s ‘My So-Called Life’, Aaron Funk surprises yet again, drawing on new ideas and on moods that have only been touched upon in his previous work.

The album seems to have a flowing sense of narrative, something akin to an opera, and unusually Aaron sings songs on it, which reinforces the sense of an emotional journey. Sonically he meshes together sometimes thunderous yet complex drum programming with delicate musical structures, creating, in places, a sense of haunted, atmospheric Jazziness, as well as spiky autumnal strings recalling the gothic orchestral beauty of his previous work.

Right from the start it’s clear we’re in new territory, with the distressed and violent ’10th Circle Of Winnipeg’, featuring a world weary jazz singer intoning deep emotional loss between crashing breaks and a corkscrewing bassline, giving us a sense of bewilderment and hurt, whereas ‘Deleted Poems’, all mournful strings and flamenco guitar, evokes empty desolation. ‘1000 Years’ is the first time we hear Aaron’s romantic singing with its orchestral accompaniment, coming across with a slightly medieval quality, cut up dramatically with angry fitful drum programming. On ‘Your Smiling Face’ Aaron’s voice is both lamenting and slightly manic over an empty downbeat drums and piano, switching quickly in mood to the cartoony rush of ‘Amazon’.

Title track ‘My Love Is A Bulldozer’ is as close as Snares gets to a pop song, with its gothic, self-deprecating vocals and dark synth melodies, but this is quickly splintered apart by rushing drumwork and metal stabs leaving you breathless. ‘She Runs’ sees things get warmer and more romantic, with epic chords and building, fidgety drums, rushing closer and closer in anticipation towards the end as if they’re speeding towards a destination. ‘Too Far Across’, drops back to sparse, lonely lyrics, the vocals yearning to see a distant lover, over sad plucked guitar.

‘Dear Poet’ is an epic track that starts by working up strings and brass into shivering shapes cut with violent stabs, before amens drop in and the orchestral work becomes a dramatic accompaniment, the melodies darting across the deftly programmed drums. ‘Your Blanket’ finishes off the album, cold, beatless and balletic, gently building some light into the string arrangements, before the track finally forms together with bombastic brass, suggesting a potentially positive end.

Picking up right where the last track on the previous COH release RETRO-2038 left off, the new album is focused on the use of beats within the similar aesthetics. While most of the previous COH records openly shy away from accentuated beat structures and instead build up their rhythmical content by layering waves and pulses, every track on TO BEAT is padded with just that – beats. The music transition is illustrated in the album’s artwork, displaying transformation of a sine-wave, a tone, into a waveform which is “beat”. This mathematical progression is made audible in the album’s opening track WAVE TO BEAT. The rest of the album, however, steers clear from dull math and presents the beats in their more traditional context of what could be referred to as “adventurous dance music”, taking the listener through various examples of beat use with the sense of playfulness and joy. The final piece, BEAT TO WAVE, wraps it up by dissolving a simplistic post-techno piece into a tonal chord. This brings back the album’s main idea, where tone and beat are essentially one and the same, like vowels and consonants in a language, like Yin and Yang in music.

KiNK’s technical prowess has long been a known trait of the Bulgarian producer’s music, and here on Marco he gets to stretch-out his intellectual, avant garde-self more than what he’s ever done for other labels like Burek, Ovum, Boe or liebe*detail. After a long career which, release-wise, dates back to 2005, he’s delivered for the most-part straight up house and techno. But here, after all these years, his debut LP sees KiNK twist his synths and contort his grooves to sound, well, very Macro. Take the confused bleeps and brash drums of “Summa Technologiae” and “Kakavida” or the interdimesional electronics and Hare Krishna chinqs of “Povreda” for example. But for some real dancefloor toughness it’s tracks like “Sintezator” and “Source OF Uncertainty” that do the trick, while for something a little more disco look out for the album’s penultimate track “Tel”. Cititrax presents the full length LP by Brooklyn duo Further Reductions. Shawn O’Sullivan and Katie Rose formed Further Reductions in 2008 as an outlet for their shared passion of electronic dance music. O’Sullivan, known for his recent techno releases as Vapauteen on L.I.E.S., 400PPM on Avian and Civil Duty (with Beau Wanzer of Streetwalker) on The Corner has been quite active lately blurring the lines between techno and noise music. With Further Reductions, O’Sullivan’s rhythmic sensibility is fused with Rose’s pop leanings to create super lush and atmospheric tracks that work both on and off the dance floor. Informed by the sounds of classic techno and early house, they subtly substitute the structure of functional club music with a more primal absorption based in their unique collaboration. Walls take a brave step and dip into the archive of electronic music pioneer and BBC Radiophonic Workshop founder, Daphne Oram, with a spellbinding set of recordings made in London and Whitstable using elements from her private tape archive. The London-based Anglo/Italian duo have made no bones about the influence of early electronic music on their modern sound, which has manifest most clearly in Alessio Natalizia’s solo project Not Waving, and in the gauzy textures and analogue constructions of their feted Walls productions. After being given access to the Oram Archive at Goldsmiths the pair respectfully indulge that fascination, focussing on the unique concrète explorations and alchemical experiments created by the Oram in the ’60s at her studio in Fairseat, Wrotham, UK. In doing so, they form a figurative bridge between that nascent, fervent period of ’60s creativity and a 2014 scene obsessed with the strange infidelities and ghostly nature of analogue electronics. In particular their ten pieces, ranging from haunting two minute vignettes to pulsing five minute scapes, acutely reflect the underlying darkness and mystery of Oram’s unparalleled archive, harnessing the deeply eerie, spectral timbres created with her patented Oramics system – a prototypical visual-to-audio interface – processing and splicing them with an array of pedals, modular synth and analogue effects to create something beautifully in-between worlds. Thanks to a sensitive mastering job by Spacemen 3/Spectrum’s Sonic Boom at New Atlantis studios, the results are rendered perfectly otherworldly making for a striking, absorbing set.
