With an artist roster as prolific and well established as Kompakt’s, you won’t find much downtime that could be used for new entries to the catalogue. That’s why we are especially happy to not only present the inaugurating full-length of VERMONT, but also introduce two distinguished producers to the fold that have built their impressive careers in our immediate vicinity, albeit appearing on the label for the very first time: Innervisions’ MARCUS WORGULL and DANILO PLESSOW (of MOTOR CITY DRUM ENSEMBLE fame), two floor familiars praised for their gripping club tunes that showcase a surprisingly unwound and novel side to their respective artist personas.

With VERMONT, MARCUS WORGULL and DANILO PLESSOW submit a noticeably mature work that seems to come from a well-attuned production duo, effectively concealing the fact that this is their first collaborative effort…and a decidedly informal one at that: These cuts were not conceived with specific aesthetic goals in mind, but emerged from a series of loose jam sessions disclosing the trespassing spirit of the sonic adventurer. It’s in the sanctum of Danilo’s former Cologne studio, surrounded by an armada of vintage analogue synthesizers, that the two music buffs somewhat inadvertently tapped into the city’s collective subconsciousness and minted fourteen sleek soundscapes of almost krautrockish proportions.

Exhibiting high amounts of arpeggiated curiosity and following a factual no-sampling policy, tracks like wonderstruck opener YAIZA, undulating bleepfest DYNAMIK, the cinematic

ELEKTRON or ambient ballad MAJESTÄT are immersed in the enticing allure of freeform sequencing, even deciding to forego the full-blown percussion kits we’ve come to love in the two producers’ main bodies of work. The restricted rhythmic pallet pays off extraordinarily well, as can be heard in the rich, breathing textures of KATZENJAMMER, DROIXHE or EBBE: if inclined to do so, one could label them as introspective synth poems, albeit with a strong sense for structure and dramaturgy that speaks volumes about the musical kinship of their originators – with or without drums.

With this kind of sonic DNA running in their systems, it should come as no surprise that Marcus and Danilo enlisted the help of luminaries DOMINIK VON SENGER (guitar on SHARAV, COCOS, and MONTAG) and JAKI LIEBEZEIT (drums/percussion on COCOS and MACCHINA), two key figures of Cologne’s krautrock scene—the former as guitarist with underground mainstays Dunkelziffer and Phantom Band, the latter as drummer for seminal pioneers Can. Further contributions come from Irish musician DERMOT O’MAHONY (violin on ÜBERSPRUNG) and Cologne agent provocateur LENA WILLIKENS (theremin on LITHIUM), two welcome additions to the sound of VERMONT: a sound that manages to be outstandingly soothing and inexplicably stirring at the same time, probably one of the rarest feats in electronic music today.

Ecstasy & Release represents the debut album from Lisbon legend Tiago Miranda, arriving under the TNT Subhead name. Warmly regarded in his homeland for the weekly 7 hour plus DJ sets he’s been holding down at Lisbon club Lux for some fifteen years, Miranda has enjoyed an equally illustrious, not to mention varied, production career over the past decade. He’s perhaps best known for his output as Tiago but beyond this, Miranda’s work has covered a broad span of projects and styles, which includes a stint in the krautrock meets Detroit techno of Portuguese group Gala Drop, as well as downtempo fare on ESP Institute as Sea Power and Change. Miranda himself describes the eight track Ecstasy & Release as his “first solo rocket” containing “ghosts of my life transcribing their emotions into techno”. Rumpistol’s 5th full album is called “Away” and references, among other things, the isolation, absence and loss that comes with the creative process, but also the privilege of being able to disappear into another world and be 100% present in the music.

After Rumpistol’s recent collaborations with vocalists Red Baron (The album “Floating” released on Project Mooncircle in 2012) and John LaMonica (the It’s Everywhere EP from 2013), he now returns with another step forward in the outgoing direction while acknowledging the finest moments of his earlier instrumental releases too. This is especially heard in the strong focus on detail and the choice of acoustic instruments as a fixed companion to the electronic machinery.
The album features American singer/songwriter John LaMonica, LA-residing Red Baron and Katerine Mills-Rymer of OOFJ.

The title “Away” was chosen because many of the tracks on the album obviously deals with absence and the many ways to get lost or to disappear into something else. Whether existentially or in the escapist sense – to be on the run from something or to be heading somewhere unknown – a driving force that Rumpistol has often mentioned in relation to his creative process.

“Everyone knows what it means to be absent, or the unpleasant and almost humiliating feeling it can be to be around absent minded people. Paradoxically, absence usually springs from a total presence. So when you’re 100% absorbed in one thing then you tend to forget everything else around you. This is the zone I enter when I work alone with my music ” Rumpistol explains.

Like most electronic musicians and composers Rumpistol has always worked alone, so the isolation is a basic condition requiring a certain personality, which some might perceive as introverted or even nerdy.
Rumpistol’s great devotion to analogue sounds shows a passion which some might find kooky too. A passion for deliberately squashed cassette tapes, reel-to-reels, crackling vinyl and vintage synthesizers from before the digital age, where sounds were designed from scratch – slowly with patience and good craftsmanship.
This analogue element mixed with Rumpistols bitter-sweet compositions and subtle use of children’s voices evokes a feeling of nostalgia, where washed-out memories of childhood comes alive. Like on the first single “Asleep” which features elements of an old Danish childrens song or “Adrift” where Rumpistol samples a recording of himself as a child.

The title track (a duet between Red Baron & Katherine Mills Rymer of OOFJ) as well as the track “A Fall” brings the subject of struggling relationships to the table, while the majestic closer “Atacama” feat. John LaMonica sees absence in a much larger universal perspective, taking inspiration from Guzmans documentary ”Nostalgia For The Light”.

With elements from juke, ambient, house, IDM & drum’n’bass, “Away” elegantly summarizes Rumpistol ability to produce highly elaborate and genre crossing electronic music, that still bears a human face, while integrating sonic details with microscopic precision, that can only be made possible by many hours – days – even months of strenuous work in the studio.

It’s an ability that has gained love from critics & DJs alike, from BBC’s legendary John Peel to French techno star Laurent Garnier and Om Unit, and has brought him to venues like Boiler Room UK and MUTEK Montreal.

The Solar One Music label operated by Nico Jagiella and Robert ‘The Exaltics’ Witschakowski use the start of a new year to launch a new series called Elektronische Werke and turn to an electro heavyweight to inaugurate it. If you are invested in this kind of music, the name Dynarec should be immediately familiar with the French producer a storied presence on Delsin, Puzzlebox and his own Vaporwave label. The Exomove EP is a perfect demonstration of Dynarec’s talents, with the full flight vocoder infused electro of “All Automatic” complemented by the entirely too rude and rugged flex of “Double Postpone”. Face down and the title track sounds like a Drexciya cut exploding in several different directions whilst “Water Meadow” is high octane unadulterated futurism.

Having forged his name in grubby lo-fi sonics with a strong pulse of post punk running through it, through some proactive A&Ring by Mike Paradinas Ekoplekz has been coaxed out of his abstract bolt hole and delivers an album of wild electronics shot through with classic machine soul. The synths that appear on tracks such as “Trace Elements” or “Pressure Level” would never have made it on to earlier releases, but they gel perfectly with the predominant Ekoplekz sound, enriching the listening experience rather than knocking the project off course. Low Jack lands his debut LP of exotic, esoteric riddims on L.I.E.S. after a slew of white-hot, down-slow club bangers. Originally commissioned as a live performance at the Quai Branly Museum (MQB) of indigenous art, the ‘Garifuna Variations’ feature percussive samples taken from the museum’s collection of recordings from Honduras, Central America and remodelled into Low Jack’s signature technoid gyrations. You’d be hard pushed to pass them off as peaktime dancefloor tackle, but as a flavour of Low Jack’s oeuvre it’s his strangest and most intriguing sensation to date, scudding from humid, distorted soundscapes to blown out pan pipe ritual, and roiling, effluent industrial groan with a consistently psychedelic and restrained approach that calls to mind some Legowelt’s oddest missions and equally the outsider black metal zones of Edasi/Ishtisshad, or Cut Hands’ vodoun incursions.

Edition of 500** Following on from releases from the likes of Powell, Mark Leckey and Merzbow, The Death Of Rave is buzzed to present the exceptional debut album from L.A.-based upstart Delroy Edwards. Combining combustible little noise sessions made with guitar pedals and reel-to-reel tape at Art school, together with shocking recent productions, ‘Teenage Tapes’ showcases a lesser-heard aspect of Delroy’s highly aware and divergent tastes owing more to Minimal Wave, Noise, EBM and Black Metal than the Chicago Ghetto-House sound of his releases for L.I.E.S. and his own L.A. Club Resource label. For anyone familiar with his banging, tracky DJ tools, this sound may come as a surprise. However, if you’ve been paying close attention to his DJ sets and mixes, it’s clearly apparent that Delroy’s tastes rove well beyond the scene he’s part of. Of eight trax, there’s four noise pieces ranging from vicious vocal assaults to nuclear drones nodding to Prurient and The Haters, whilst the rhythm-driven pieces cover scorched ground ranging from Terminator II-style cues to a fusion of Lynchian atmosphere and rampant drum machine patterns coming off like Badalamenti meets Wold. Committed to worn-out tape over a number of years, it’s all testament to the spirit of febrile spontaneity and disciplined dexterity consistent to Delroy’s art, an aesthetic acutely at odds with so much anodyne dance music and manicured noise.

The Trilogy Tapes label signal the start of a potentially devastating series of releases with the Burglar Loops EP from Tuff Sherm, the slightly less leaned on production alias of Eugene Hector, the tireless Australian producer known to most as Dro Carey. Hector’s appeared on Will Bankhead’s label under both aliases previously, most recently under the Tuff Sherm banner with the Pharmacy EP, whose understated take on house music has shades of Kassem Mosse’s monochromatic productions. Hector is seemingly in a much rowdier mood here as the opening track “Cleric” demonstrates, seemingly culling influences from the last decade of niche house movements and cramming them in the spaces between a booming kick drum. Elsewhere, the title track sees Sherm opt for the abstract approach with a vocal sample that lends the production a certain degree of ghetto roughness that doesn’t detract from it’s overall affecting nature. With 12″s from _moonraker, DJ Spider & Marshalitto and obscure Youtube presence Rezettstill to come it feels like 2013 is going to be The Trilogy Tapes finest year thus far.
