Oren Ambarchi – Quixotism

news-14-07-oren-ambarchi

Artist: Oren Ambarchi
Title Of Album: Quixotism
Year Of Release: 2014
Label: Editions Mego / EMEGO 202
Genre: Experimental, Electronic
Quality: Flac
Bitrate: Lossless
Total Time: 00:46:49
Total Size: 211 mb

Tracklist:
1. Quixotism Part 1 (17:58)
2. Quixotism Part 2 (4:09)
3. Quixotism Part 3 (6:58)
4. Quixotism Part 4 (2:59)
5. Quixotism Part 5 (14:44)

Recorded with a multitude of collaborators in Europe, Japan, Australia and the USA, Quixotism presents the fruit of two years of work in the form of a single, LP-length piece in five parts. Ambarchi’s work in recent years has evinced an increasing fascination with the possibilities of combining abstract sonic textures with rhythm and pulse, whether in his drumming with Keiji Haino, the subtly driving ride cymbals provided by drummer Joe Talia in their work together, or the motorik grooves of Sagittarian Domain (Editions Mego, 2012). Quixotism takes this aspect of Ambarchi’s recent work to the next level: the entirety of this long-form work is built on a foundation of pulsing double-time electronic percussion provided by Thomas Brinkmann. Beginning as almost subliminal propulsion behind cavernous orchestral textures and John Tilbury’s delicate piano interjections, the percussive elements (elaborated on by Ambarchi and Matt Chamberlain) slowly inch into the foreground of the piece before suddenly breaking out into a polyrhythmic shuffle around the halfway mark, being joined by master Japanese tabla player U-zhaan for the piece’s final, beautiful, passages.
The pulse acts as thread leading the listener though a heterogeneous variety of acoustic spaces, from the concert hall in which the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra were recorded to the intimacy of Crys Cole’s contact-mic textures. Ambarchi’s guitar itself ranges over this wide variety of acoustic spaces, from airless, clipped tones to swirling, reverberated fog. Within the complex web Ambarchi spins over the piece’s steadily pulsing foundation, elements approach and recede, appear and reappear, in a non-linear fashion, even as the piece plots an overall course from the grey, almost Nono-esque reverberated space of its opening section to the crisp foreground presence of Jim O’Rourke’s synth and Evyind Kang’s strings in its final moments. Formally indebted to the side-long workouts of classic Cologne techno, the long-form works of composers such as Eliane Radigue, and the organic push and pull of improvised performance, Quixotism is constantly in motion, yet its transitions happen slowly and steadily, so that they are often nearly imperceptible, the diverse elements which make up the piece succeeding one another with the logic of a dream.
Anyone who follows Ambarchi’s work knows that it has many facets: explorations of the outer limits of rock with Keiji Haino, psychoacoustic interference and sizzling harmonics in his solo performances, delicate improvisations with Keith Rowe or John Tilbury. To all these projects, Ambarchi brings his particular sensibility, patiently allowing sounds to develop on their own terms without forsaking their intrinsic physical and emotional power. Similarly, although Quixotism is shaped by its many contributors, the resulting sound world is unmistakably Ambarchi’s own. His most substantial solo release since Audience of One (Touch, 2012), Quixotism represents the summation of Ambarchi’s work over the last few years while also pointing to the future.

Tracklist:
1. Trouble (54:00)

‘Trouble’ is the brand new dispatch from the assorted output of Kevin Drumm and sits as one of the quietest in his entire catalogue. A single continuous 54 minute excursion into the netherworld of the audio spectrum, ‘Trouble’ is neither ambient nor drone but a more complex investigation into the deep recesses of sound. One which discreetly works itself into the mind of a listener willing to invest in the path laid out in this extremely subtle, beautiful and exceptional release.

Tracklist:
1. Naked Land (26:12)
2. Monolake (16:08)
3. Colonialists (10:03)
4. Quake (14:55)

After a three year absence, the collaborative project of Ilpo Vaisanen and Dirk Dresselhaus (better known as Schneider TM) yields a new album for their regular haunt Editions Mego, and it’s a subtle beast that rewards patient and attentive ears. “Naked Land” growls and prowls over 26 minutes of mutant groans and drones fizzing with acoustic energy, while “Monolake” brings proceedings down to a more tense, restrained level of disturbing noise. “Colonialists” takes the high-frequency road with a multitude of nerve-jangling soundwaves merging into one slow-release cacophony, and “Quake” finishes off with some grungy distortion reaching towards a twisted kind of musicality.

Philipp Quehenberger – Content

G7njWAY

Label: Editions Mego
Catalog#: EMEGO188
Release date: 2014
Source: WEB
Format: MP3
Quality: 320 kbps
Size: 94 mb
Genre: Electronic
Style: Techno, Experimental

Tracklist:
1.1. Deadline (4:56)
1.2. Issues (4:18)
1.3. In Sight (4:06)
1.4. Fucked (4:31)
2.1. Uff Uff (5:35)
2.2. Startled (5:05)
2.3. Extended (4:31)
2.4. For Real (6:02)

Philipp Quehenberger’s music has existed as a consistent strain amongst the Austrian underground for the last 15 years. His output is a cracking combination of dance floor zeal and deep disco disorientation. A perpetually rotating sphere which blends genres whilst bending the body and mind. Quehenberger’s sweaty cerebrum is significantly showcased on his second full length for Editions Mego.

‘Content’ ventures deeper into Quehenberger’s world of electro noir, ketamine cool and sordid soul. ‘Fucked’ is a monumental drive through a gloriously queasy and sleazy terrain which leads into the rolling rhythms of last years killer ‘Uff Uff 12″”. Here an oozing psychedelic tapestry folds amongst muffled voices resulting in a striking propulsive chant. ‘Startled’ further charts the depths of dance and disorientation as striding rhythms coalesce amongst gloriously diminishing synths. ‘Extended’ bounces around an ecstatic carnival atmosphere where an abject ringleader swerves amongst swirling organs and a thick organic beat. ‘Content’ is brimming with hard driving dance music. A bass line degenerate hurtling out of the speakers as the ultimate mood enhancer. Equal parts quarantine and club ‘Content’ is one Quehenberger’s finest works to date

CoH – TO BEAT

Label: Editions Mego / 197

Total Size: 106 mb

6. Moonviewhigh (06:17)
7. Bond Number (04:48)
8. Helicon (06:25)
9. BEAT TO WAVE (05:33)

Picking up right where the last track on the previous COH release RETRO-2038 left off, the new album is focused on the use of beats within the similar aesthetics. While most of the previous COH records openly shy away from accentuated beat structures and instead build up their rhythmical content by layering waves and pulses, every track on TO BEAT is padded with just that – beats. The music transition is illustrated in the album’s artwork, displaying transformation of a sine-wave, a tone, into a waveform which is “beat”. This mathematical progression is made audible in the album’s opening track WAVE TO BEAT. The rest of the album, however, steers clear from dull math and presents the beats in their more traditional context of what could be referred to as “adventurous dance music”, taking the listener through various examples of beat use with the sense of playfulness and joy. The final piece, BEAT TO WAVE, wraps it up by dissolving a simplistic post-techno piece into a tonal chord. This brings back the album’s main idea, where tone and beat are essentially one and the same, like vowels and consonants in a language, like Yin and Yang in music.

*Excerpts from the album. Now available from Experimedia.net.* LP version. You’ll Be Safe Forever marks the first release from Locust in 12 years. Mark Van Hoen, who made a string of influential releases as Locust on R&S records in the 1990s, all but retired the alias at the end of that decade. In May 2012, Van Hoen was invited to perform a live set on WFMU radio. In order to make the set more spontaneous and add a further dimension, he asked friend and fellow musician Louis Sherman to collaborate. While improvising new material in Sherman’s Brooklyn rehearsal studio, it swiftly became obvious that the material sounded like Locust. Inspired by joint explorations with found sound sources and ambient textures, and sharing a pan-dimensional immersion in the length and breadth of analog and digital recording, the duo performed a series of tracks live. This material, combined with previously-recorded tape tracks dating back to 2006 form the bulk of the album. The melancholic depths of electronic music explored in those improvisations, expanded further through subsequent sessions at Van Hoen’s Woodstock, NY studio, have resulted in this latest entry in Locust’s impressive discography. The record showcases prime examples of Van Hoen’s compulsively hypnotic beats and abstracted pop vocals — already hallmarks of his collected work since 1993 — manipulating a global variety of samples in Celemony’s Melodyne software to weave a unique sonic tapestry, as inviting as it is intricate. Paired with Sherman’s evocative synth improvisations — an immediately visceral element new to Locust — these collaborators have crafted a shattered landscape that bridges two perspectives of progressive movement in electronic music under a single name. Sherman, an American from Baltimore, comes to the band armed with a vast knowledge of the history of electronic music. This, combined with Londoner Mark Van Hoen’s known musical pedigree, maps the complete topography of a landscape — its shadow and light, depth and height, mesmerizing complexity and ethereal simplicity — with a break-beating heart and alchemical ear.
