Floods is the fifth album of Silencio, including 12 tracks that are simultaneously warm and cinematic, reminding the sound of Stars Of The Lid, Labradford and Eluvium.

The album was originally released in 2010 as an unofficial 10-track cdr in an extremely limited edition of 40 copies, just for friends and some fanatic listeners, and is now released officially by Sound In Silence with new artwork, including two bonus unreleased tracks and being, for the first time, properly mastered by George Mastrokostas (aka Absent Without Leave).

Floods is a collection of wistful and melancholic melodies played by Demoulin, Delgoda, Lecocq and Epstein using guitars, synthesizers, electronics, bass, drums and percussion.

This is a limited edition of 200 handmade and hand-numbered collectible copies, packaged in a lovely hand-stamped dark green cardboard envelope with the front cover image printed on a polaroid style photo paper.

Mark Van Hoen, who made a string of influential releases as Locust on R&S records in the 1990s, all but retired the alias at the end of that decade. In May 2012, Van Hoen was invited to perform a live set on WFMU radio. In order to make the set more spontaneous and add a further dimension, he asked friend and fellow musician Louis Sherman to collaborate. While improvising new material in Sherman’s Brooklyn rehearsal studio, it swiftly became obvious that the material sounded like Locust. Inspired by joint explorations with found sound sources and ambient textures, and sharing a pan-dimensional immersion in the length and breadth of analog and digital recording, the duo performed a series of tracks live. This material, combined with previously-recorded tape tracks dating back to 2006 form the bulk of the album. The melancholic depths of electronic music explored in those improvisations, expanded further through subsequent sessions at Van Hoen’s Woodstock, NY studio, have resulted in this latest entry in Locust’s impressive discography. The record showcases prime examples of Van Hoen’s compulsively hypnotic beats and abstracted pop vocals — already hallmarks of his collected work since 1993 — manipulating a global variety of samples in Celemony’s Melodyne software to weave a unique sonic tapestry, as inviting as it is intricate. Paired with Sherman’s evocative synth improvisations — an immediately visceral element new to Locust — these collaborators have crafted a shattered landscape that bridges two perspectives of progressive movement in electronic music under a single name. Sherman, an American from Baltimore, comes to the band armed with a vast knowledge of the history of electronic music. This, combined with Londoner Mark Van Hoen’s known musical pedigree, maps the complete topography of a landscape — its shadow and light, depth and height, mesmerizing complexity and ethereal simplicity — with a break-beating heart and alchemical ear.

Mimetic – otherwise known as Jerome Soudan – started his career as a drummer for the band Von Magnet before turning to the world of psychedelic techno and far-out electronic excursions, and this latest LP for Germany’s Hymen Records is a veritable depiction of his broad range of styles and influences. The word is ‘beats’ here, and the opener “Synthetize Me” has one of those drum breaks that grab you by the chin from its first bar, something which can be said about pretty much every track on this fifteen piece leviathan. “So Little Chance” adds in some prophetic vocals to his shuffling drum percolations, whilst “Game In Land 2” feels like AFX gone even more mad on a totally out-of-control drum sequencer, while title track “Where We Will Never Go” sounds like something Kraftwerk would cook up if they’d engaged in Belgian EBM. Other highlights include: “One Of Us”, a totally screwed-up hip-hop-grime-rave number, “Cyanure” which sounds like a mix between Autechre and Drexciya, and also don Mika Vainio’s remix of “WWWNever Go” – an inevitably incredible chunk of drones like only Mr.Vainio can do. Recommended.

Multi-faceted Canadian artist James Teej drops his second LP, Eight Bit Ocean, late-April on Sashas Last Night On Earth imprint. Releasing his first James Teej singles in 2008, Teej has since become a firm fixture on the electronic music circuit with releases for We Play House, Rebirth, Supernature and No.19 Music as well as a debut LP on Radio Slaves Rekids in 2010 entitled Evening Harvest. Since then, Teej has joined old friends Jared Simms and Voytek Korab to become one third of My Favorite Robot, an act which is steadily becoming another of Torontos break-outs via tracks and remixes for Visionquest and Crosstown Rebels as well as their own highly regarded My Favorite Robot Records. Vocalist, producer, DJ, live act, A&R and collaborator – Teej is a genuine electronic music polymath and, as such, his material is imbued with a real sense of craftsmanship where every detail has its true place and meaning. Its this meticulous DIY attitude to every aspect of his art that bleeds through Eight Bit Ocean nine tracks which see Teej focused on delivering a wide range of moods, tones and textures that while all centered around dancefloor rhythms, deliver much more than tracky club tunes. From the brooding opener, A Civil Duty, dense shifting melodies are one of the reoccurring themes of Eight Bit Ocean. Never intent on staying with one mood within one track or throughout the whole LP, Teej lets tones fall and rise throughout with melancholic aspects giving way to rousing keys (The Last Request) and fluttering leads offsetting ponderous basslines (Liking Your Disorder). Sometimes its what is left out that really hits home on Eight Bit Ocean tracks like Right At Home and Stand use just enough vocals to humanise them without taking away the instrumental punch while the arp-driven, robust electro of Reunion employs only as much kick as it needs. This less is more attitude is only applied to arrangements and sound choices as musically Teej runs riot, walking the line between old and new perfectly by imbibing each track with genuine subtle, emotive transitions and contrasts. Like many classic house albums, Eight Bit Ocean is the sound of an artist, a handful of synths, drum machines and a mic exploring musical possibilities and, as a result, makes for an enthralling listen as well as a hefty cache of dancefloor material. Timeless sounding stuff
