All-round bass legend Zed Bias touches down on Black Butter with a hot new single backed by a rather killer selection of remixes. Title track “Shizam” features the vocals of Stylo G and Scruffizer, and it’s a purely grimed-out affair from start to finish, with a heavy touch of percussive action. Among the three remixes, grime legend Plastician makes a rare appearance with a reinterpretation that takes us back to FWD’s early days – that bassline is a true slasher in every sense of the word.

One of the most enduring, influential and critically respected UK dance producers brings a weighty album to land for Loefah’s Swamp81 label. Ahead of launching his new Biasonic label platform for the UK scene, he delivers this timely reminder of why he’s king of the bassbins, swaggering across lines between house, garage, broken beat and even electro-funk with Roy Davis Junior. In fact, the electro thing seems to be a running theme throughout the album, whether in the shocked-percussion of ‘Eingang’, as a Mr De’ like presence on the aforementioned ‘We Are There’ ace with Roy davis Jr, or in the pair of ‘ard-body killers with Chunky, ‘We’re There’, and ‘Flamm’. And it’s a canny move, connecting with the original ’80s NYC dancefloor roots of his adopted hometown(s), Manchester and Salford, in a way that many youngers may not realise, but should hopefully explore. It’s all optimal Swamp81 gear and highly recommended to the Bass connaisseurs.
