Those cheeky scamps at Golf Channel come through with a surprise here with A Walk In The Dark, the debut album from a mysterious group of individuals known only as The Central Executives. Concerted internet searching as to the exact identity of The Central Executives has proved fruitless, as have attempts to coerce the label for information. However given how extensive Phil South’s figurative rolodex is, not to mention the sheer breadth of talent that’s appeared on Golf Channel over the years, we are willing to wager there is some high profile disco talent behind The Central Executives. Certainly A Walk In The Dark is filled with loose limbed punk funk and supple house that’s quite aptly described by the label as “Sound Signature style machine jams, bare bones vocal led improvisations, discordant Arthur Russell moments & the distorted reflections of roots House that run to the very core of the big apple.”

Sendai, the collaborative project of Yves De Mey and Peter Van Hoesen, release their second album on Archives Intérieures. Both artists are longtime friends and share a deep passion for exploring the outer limits of the electronic music spectrum. Sendai combines De Mey’s skillful extraction of deep and dynamic sounds from his modular synthesizer system with Van Hoesen’s keen sense of digital composition and sound design. A Smaller Divide is the result of six months of intense remote collaboration. Ideas were shot back and forth between Antwerp and Berlin, slowly fusing into a coherent whole. Some of the tracks were born out of occasional real life meetings resulting in impromptu jam sessions. The album presents both approaches and indicates a fresh intention to take things further. It forms a logical progression to 2012’s Geotope, using different musical colours within similar structures. A Smaller Divide articulates a willingness to open up the previous sound canvas, while at the same time remaining uncompromisingly radical in terms of execution and structure.

Millie & Andrea have announced their debut album, Drop the Vowels.

Formerly an anonymous project, eventually revealed as Miles Whittaker and Andy Stott, Millie & Andrea released a series of 12″s for Modern Love sub-label Daphne between 2008 and 2010, drawing from hardcore, piano house, jungle, and more. The pair returned this year with a new release, ‘Stage 2,’ and will follow that with Drop the Vowels on March 31.

“Produced fast and loose through late 2013 / early 2014,” the record is described in its press release as “an album that recalls the strict and stripped funk of Anthony Shakir as much as it does Leila’s incredible debut ‘Like Weather,’ eschewing the dark aesthetic both producers are best known for in favour of something much more visceral. It’s an album borne from a love of both pop and club music, made to evoke an adrenalised, hedonistic, as well as an emotional response.”

Although most of the material on Drop the Vowels is new, it does include revisions of ‘Temper Tantrum’ and ‘Spectral Source,’ previously released on the Millie & Andrea 12″s.

The debut album from Barren Harvest, the collaborative project from Atriarch’s Lenny Smith and Worm Ouroboros’s Jessica Way is now available for pre-order from our friends at the visionary label Handmade Birds. This is without question one of the highlights of the early part of 2014, and is sure to stand up to the barrage of amazing music coming out during the rest of this calendar year.

The album is called Subtle Cruelties, and as you listen to the record and get quite literally lost in the wide variety of sounds that it contains, it is rather easy to understand why the title is what it is. To call it a folk record or an ambient record would be the way of the simple-minded, because what it really comes down to is that this is a record of poetry, of truly transcendent art. There is poetry in the lyrical content for sure, but it doesn’t end there. The music on the album, which focuses on acoustic arrangements using guitars, synthesizers, and the delicate interplay of the voices of Way and Smith, creates a web of dark, haunting, desperate poetry that resonates deep inside the listener, and is capable of shaking the cores of our very souls. To listen to this record, to truly give in to its beauty, is a moving experience to say the very least.

I don’t know how Way and Smith found each other, or how they came together to create this fragile and stunning music, but they have created something very special and unique. I expected a beautiful record, but I think I was expecting something more cerebral than this, which instead comes across as emotionally intense and almost primal. Nature’s defenses, like our own, become aged, stressed, threadbare; when those defenses are broken down, we are left unbearably vulnerable. This is the story that Subtle Cruelties seems to tell.

As much as I love this record, I am left with the cynical conclusion that a lot of people just won’t be ready for it. I have to stress, though, that if you are capable of truly opening your heart and your spirit to the nearly palpable heartbreak of this record, you’ll have no choice than to love it.

The multi-tentacled beast that is Gnod reveals here another, er, tentacle in the writhing and sucking meeting of Druss (aka Paddy from Gnod) and Russian creepo electronics merchants, the duo Love Cult. Tracks are credited to either Druss, Love Cult or Love Cult Takes Druss but to be honest the joins are seamless – these geographically disparate freq-freaks are clearly on the same wavelength.

Placed against the grubby tech fury of the recent Dwellings and Druss Gnod-offshoot releases, this LP at first appears more restrained, though an unsettling and mostly downtempo atmosphere pervades. The overall feeling of unease proves quite difficult to pin down, especially when the component parts are examined in isolation. Whether you focus on the pleasing deep deep bass rumblings, the pulsing mids, the primitive staccato drum machine, the occasional half-buried vocals, the dreamlike corroded loops, or the obnoxious insistence of the upfront disembodied vocal sample-triggering, there’s seemingly something familiar to hang on to at every turn – but taken together in the slightly ‘off’ way these ingredients coagulate, there is in truth very little comfort to be had.

To break it down, for what it’s worth, side A is weighted in favour of Love Cult (2 collabs, 2 solo tracks) and on the B Druss do the heavy-lifting (again 2 collab, 2 solo). Take for example the unbearable claustrophobia of split composition Yr Problems – it has all the previously-mentioned elements, none of which are overly sinister in isolation but put the listener right off their lunch when served on the same tray. Death Forever on the B could be (and should be!) the closing credits soundtrack to J. Carpenter’s Prince Of Darkness. It isn’t – though freely-available contemporary tools and a little cunning can make that cyber-satanic dream a reality for anyone willing to get their kicks in such a fashion, inevitably losing their shit to the frantic stuttering electro groove, corrosive B-movie bleeps, and Crowley-esque ‘FOREVER’ chants on infinite repeat.

Two extra digital-only tracks, somewhat lighter in mood, serve as a fine apertif and as good a prompt as any to pull open the curtains and reflect on the preceding 45-minute offbeat excursion, back safe in reasssuring daylight normality…though it doesn’t look quite the same any more…

With an artist roster as prolific and well established as Kompakt’s, you won’t find much downtime that could be used for new entries to the catalogue. That’s why we are especially happy to not only present the inaugurating full-length of VERMONT, but also introduce two distinguished producers to the fold that have built their impressive careers in our immediate vicinity, albeit appearing on the label for the very first time: Innervisions’ MARCUS WORGULL and DANILO PLESSOW (of MOTOR CITY DRUM ENSEMBLE fame), two floor familiars praised for their gripping club tunes that showcase a surprisingly unwound and novel side to their respective artist personas.

With VERMONT, MARCUS WORGULL and DANILO PLESSOW submit a noticeably mature work that seems to come from a well-attuned production duo, effectively concealing the fact that this is their first collaborative effort…and a decidedly informal one at that: These cuts were not conceived with specific aesthetic goals in mind, but emerged from a series of loose jam sessions disclosing the trespassing spirit of the sonic adventurer. It’s in the sanctum of Danilo’s former Cologne studio, surrounded by an armada of vintage analogue synthesizers, that the two music buffs somewhat inadvertently tapped into the city’s collective subconsciousness and minted fourteen sleek soundscapes of almost krautrockish proportions.

Exhibiting high amounts of arpeggiated curiosity and following a factual no-sampling policy, tracks like wonderstruck opener YAIZA, undulating bleepfest DYNAMIK, the cinematic

ELEKTRON or ambient ballad MAJESTÄT are immersed in the enticing allure of freeform sequencing, even deciding to forego the full-blown percussion kits we’ve come to love in the two producers’ main bodies of work. The restricted rhythmic pallet pays off extraordinarily well, as can be heard in the rich, breathing textures of KATZENJAMMER, DROIXHE or EBBE: if inclined to do so, one could label them as introspective synth poems, albeit with a strong sense for structure and dramaturgy that speaks volumes about the musical kinship of their originators – with or without drums.

With this kind of sonic DNA running in their systems, it should come as no surprise that Marcus and Danilo enlisted the help of luminaries DOMINIK VON SENGER (guitar on SHARAV, COCOS, and MONTAG) and JAKI LIEBEZEIT (drums/percussion on COCOS and MACCHINA), two key figures of Cologne’s krautrock scene—the former as guitarist with underground mainstays Dunkelziffer and Phantom Band, the latter as drummer for seminal pioneers Can. Further contributions come from Irish musician DERMOT O’MAHONY (violin on ÜBERSPRUNG) and Cologne agent provocateur LENA WILLIKENS (theremin on LITHIUM), two welcome additions to the sound of VERMONT: a sound that manages to be outstandingly soothing and inexplicably stirring at the same time, probably one of the rarest feats in electronic music today.
