The album you are about to listen manages to consolidate the essence of two outstanding individuals: philipp münch who has made himself a name both as a solo artist and as a member of countless projects, and dan fox a.k.a. loss, a highly regarded veteran of the noise music scene. when philipp and dan met in person a mutual artistic respect was the spark for a collaborative effort and resulted in a transcontinental interchange of inspiration and sound files. after processing each other’s basic tracks, the final release clearly showcases both participants’ distinctive style as well as the uniqueness of this creative amalgamation. as the album title indicates, ‘transcontinental desperation’ is an aural statement of distress, anger and doubt, where topics like injustice and overthrowing the media have been integrated into the voice samples and lyrics. the suspense buried in the sound textures transmits an emotional spectrum of dejection and subliminal aggression, executed with a variety of electronic and acoustic equipment. dark ambient soundscapes are combined with clear and distorted beats, impulsive sequencer lines, abstract effects, manipulated vocals – all these components build a perfect bridge between minimal electro and contemporary industrial music. ‘transcontinental desparation’ deeply connects two exceptional performers for a haunting listening experience – an enthralling liaison which might well be continued some day…

Phylum Sinter is the musical alias of 33 year old Christopher Todd, of Detroit. The name means a set of species intended to be used as fuel. Since 2002 he has been involved in the leftfield electronic scene, having cut his teeth on numerous netlabels (Post Under, Crazy Language, Xynthetic) and releasing albums on n5md digital imprint Enpeg (the album ‘From Unity To Segmentation’ released in 2009) and MMR (‘Detroit Nocturnes’, released in 2010) and Hopskotch Records (‘Esc’, released in 2013). His style combines heavy love of DSP and modular synthesis systems and software generation with Detroit Techno and early IDM melodic sensibilities. He continues to write music daily and hopes to tour in 2014.

The first artist album on the Parisian label ClekClekBoom fittingly comes from French Fries. After debuting on the ‘French’ electro label YounGunZ Entertainment (alongside Bambounou) in 2010, Valentino Canzani Mora has remained central to ClekClekBoom since he co-founded the label back in 2011. The Kepler LP comes after a string of bass-heavy tracks and bootlegs, but there’s no denying this LP is the South American-born artist’s piece de resistance. At 13 tracks long, the album explores hissing cosmic ambience, experimental drum tracks, industrial bass-techno, broken beat rhythms, and some dubbier excursions on a classical tip. Special mention going to the album’s club-geared highlights “Bug Noticed” and “Change The Past”. Highly recommended.

Crushing debut album from forward UK producer Untold. His ‘Black Light Spiral’ is an airless, borderline-aggressive assault on the dance borne from nigh on two decades immersed in British rave culture. Since 2008, with releases on his Hemlock imprint, for close chums Hessle Audio, and for Clone and R&S, among others, he’s been instrumental in the post-Dubstep field with clinical appropriations of Breakstep, Grime, and most recently, European Techno. He’s regularly touted as a producer’s producer, a don among the baying, bassbin-dwelling throng, so as you’d imagine his debut album is an eagerly awaited statement for many. Across 8 tracks and 40 minutes he eschews any sense of romantic rave nostalgia in favour of focussing on bludgeoning, masculine-dread dystopia. Opening to the cacophony of sirens and distant soundsystem rumble, ‘5 Wheels’ sets the scene before ‘Drop It on the One’ and ‘Sing a Love Song’ mangle strafing FM signals with blown-out, roiling ragga techno sound design, and ‘Doubles’ canters on a dried-out techno groove. ‘Wet Wool’ follows with more amorphous, impressionistic sound design, whilst ‘Strange Dreams’ and the aggy charge of ‘Hobthrush’ rags a jagged, grimacing sort of martial techno akin to recent Perc moves.

The Achterbahn D’Amour pairing of Johannes “Iron Curtis” Paluka and Jurgen “Jool” Albert (formerly Edit Piafra) return to the Acid Test series with a debut album Odd Movements. Since the project first emerged on Absurd’s dedicated acid offshoot in 2011, Achterbahn D’Amour have become mainstays of the series and encapsulated the experimental ethos of the series and displayed a true reverence for the classic 303 and 606 Roland machines. After a relatively low-key 2013 with just the two Acid Test releases from regular contributor Tin Man and famed Frenchman Pépé Bradock, Odd Movements is a statement of intent and sits nicely alongside the other Acid Test long players from Recondite and Tin Man whilst demonstrating the format suits Albert and Pakula well.
