It almost came to the point that a new release on Ki didn’t happen as Nick and Ben, the guys behind Colo, lost their laptop in the heyday of the album production. Backups? Unfortunately none! Their debut album was almost done: ten tracks with about 150 to 200 single audio tracks, many hours of fine detailed work just gone. But fortunately not the whole world is bad and the finder returned the laptop to the hands of their owners and Colo’s debut album by the name of “UR” got pressed on vinyl. The name “UR” is a word play and not a reminiscence to the legendary Detroit label Underground Resistance. The bands name and the title of the album form the word “colo-ur”. All ten tracks on “UR” were recorded live and arranged on the computer afterwards. Except of some drum sounds no samples were used. For the London based duo producing music is pure teamwork: both throw in ideas and play around with their hardware instruments. Besides vintage synthesizers they also use a lot of analog delay, or an 8-track recorder to give their tracks a certain layered and deep sound structure. The fragile vocals sung by Nick Smith underline this in a mystical way. Most tracks are created intuitively and directly recorded, to save the idea and not to lose its feel for the moment. One take, one track you could say. Although not every detail of the initial idea makes it to the final track. But if you listen closely, “Doorframe” for example has the room sound of their studio underneath the vocals that gives the song a rough and fading note. The vocals on “Holidays” were also made on the fly, recorded with a cheap Mic that came with a game console. Nick just felt he should record this melodic idea he had, not to forget it. What turned out was so good and unique sounding that it was kept for the final version. The single “Holidays” was released beforehand featuring a remix by Christian Löffler.

Released through his regular home of Dial Records, the album was started in Efdemin’s home of Berlin but went on to take a more Japanese tone when Efdemin relocated to Kyoto as part of a three-month artist residency in the city. Speaking to Resident Advisor this morning, Efdemin claims that “it helped me focus and work pretty fast on the material I had recorded in Berlin.”

“Kyoto is a very powerful, calm and healthy place”, he explains. “We stayed in a nice studio-apartment next to the river, surrounded by the blue mountains you see on the album cover (a picture I took from the bridge in front of our house). Nearly every day we took walks in the city or to one of the temples nearby, studying Japan’s culture, religion and cuisine. I did a lot of research on Japanese instruments and visited bell collectors or flute makers with the help of the institute.”

Though their sound blends everything from dub to reggae to Middle Eastern folk, Washington, DC’s own Thievery Corporation developed in the tradition of Bossa Nova. They’ll return to those roots with the release of their seventh studio album, Saudade, due out April 1st their own ESL Music label.

Reacquainting themselves with Brazilian legends like Antonio Carlos Jobim, Gal Costa, and Luis Bonfá, the core duo of DJs Rob Garza and Eric Hilton sought to create a “delicate yet deeply sensuous sound”, according to a press release. (“Saudade” is the Portuguese word for “contented melancholy” or “the presence of absence.”) Like 2011′s Culture of Fear, the album is packed with guest contributors, including U.N.K.L.E., Argentine singer Federico Aubele, Brazilian percussionist Roberto Santos, and longtime Thievery cohort LouLou Ghelichkhani.

“We always try to progress into something different and stretch our musical chops, and taking a whole album to dive into this one sound seemed like a really great way to do that,” said Eric Hilton in an issued statement. Added Rob Garza, “It’s a bit of a departure for us, but at the same time these are our roots, this is what brought us together. It’s us coming full circle from electronic music back to something organic before we move on to our next chapter.”

Our first taste of the “very feminine record” comes with “Depth Of My Soul”, a rich and dramatic jazz-tune. Feeling at home in an old movie or a cocktail lounge, guest vocalist Shana Halligan passionately croons over luxuriant strings and vibrant orchestration. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Garza said the song has lots of “hidden meanings, adding, “It’s kind of inspired by love, but it’s also inspired by psychedelic moments musically from all types of soundtracks. I appreciate a lot of films from that era, just the look, the stylings, the locations, everything.”

Rumpistol’s 5th full album is called “Away” and references, among other things, the isolation, absence and loss that comes with the creative process, but also the privilege of being able to disappear into another world and be 100% present in the music.

After Rumpistol’s recent collaborations with vocalists Red Baron (The album “Floating” released on Project Mooncircle in 2012) and John LaMonica (the It’s Everywhere EP from 2013), he now returns with another step forward in the outgoing direction while acknowledging the finest moments of his earlier instrumental releases too. This is especially heard in the strong focus on detail and the choice of acoustic instruments as a fixed companion to the electronic machinery.
The album features American singer/songwriter John LaMonica, LA-residing Red Baron and Katerine Mills-Rymer of OOFJ.

The title “Away” was chosen because many of the tracks on the album obviously deals with absence and the many ways to get lost or to disappear into something else. Whether existentially or in the escapist sense – to be on the run from something or to be heading somewhere unknown – a driving force that Rumpistol has often mentioned in relation to his creative process.

“Everyone knows what it means to be absent, or the unpleasant and almost humiliating feeling it can be to be around absent minded people. Paradoxically, absence usually springs from a total presence. So when you’re 100% absorbed in one thing then you tend to forget everything else around you. This is the zone I enter when I work alone with my music ” Rumpistol explains.

Like most electronic musicians and composers Rumpistol has always worked alone, so the isolation is a basic condition requiring a certain personality, which some might perceive as introverted or even nerdy.
Rumpistol’s great devotion to analogue sounds shows a passion which some might find kooky too. A passion for deliberately squashed cassette tapes, reel-to-reels, crackling vinyl and vintage synthesizers from before the digital age, where sounds were designed from scratch – slowly with patience and good craftsmanship.
This analogue element mixed with Rumpistols bitter-sweet compositions and subtle use of children’s voices evokes a feeling of nostalgia, where washed-out memories of childhood comes alive. Like on the first single “Asleep” which features elements of an old Danish childrens song or “Adrift” where Rumpistol samples a recording of himself as a child.

The title track (a duet between Red Baron & Katherine Mills Rymer of OOFJ) as well as the track “A Fall” brings the subject of struggling relationships to the table, while the majestic closer “Atacama” feat. John LaMonica sees absence in a much larger universal perspective, taking inspiration from Guzmans documentary ”Nostalgia For The Light”.

With elements from juke, ambient, house, IDM & drum’n’bass, “Away” elegantly summarizes Rumpistol ability to produce highly elaborate and genre crossing electronic music, that still bears a human face, while integrating sonic details with microscopic precision, that can only be made possible by many hours – days – even months of strenuous work in the studio.

It’s an ability that has gained love from critics & DJs alike, from BBC’s legendary John Peel to French techno star Laurent Garnier and Om Unit, and has brought him to venues like Boiler Room UK and MUTEK Montreal.

The London producer broke onto the scene early last year with the Commotion EP, released through Dusk and Blackdown’s Keysound Recordings. Since then Wen, real name Owen Darby, has developed a strong affinity with the label. Heavily influenced by everyday life in the UK capital, the LP is littered with slang and pirate radio samples, laid atop Darby’s sparse grime frameworks.

“When I send out my responses it’s stamped with my identity,” says Darby. “The album was a way to show some progression through that identity. It has some calmer, emotive moments but moves into some energy and brightness, taking the temperature down to a darker place but ramping the urgency and tension up towards the end.”

The album features collaborations with Blackdown, Riko and Soundman Chronicles chief Parris, as well as a brief cameo from Wiley on “Nightcrawler (Devils Mix).” Signals lands as the latest in a string of full-lengths from Keysound, with Wen following the likes of Damu, E.M.M.A. and Logos.

Having forged his name in grubby lo-fi sonics with a strong pulse of post punk running through it, through some proactive A&Ring by Mike Paradinas Ekoplekz has been coaxed out of his abstract bolt hole and delivers an album of wild electronics shot through with classic machine soul. The synths that appear on tracks such as “Trace Elements” or “Pressure Level” would never have made it on to earlier releases, but they gel perfectly with the predominant Ekoplekz sound, enriching the listening experience rather than knocking the project off course. It’s a fine continuation of both an artist, and the wider tradition of quality leftfield electronica, of which Planet Mu has been a major instigator.

Golden Retriever is the duo of Matt Carlson (modular synthesizer) and Jonathan Sielaff (bass clarinet), two musicians who blur the line between sounds created electronically and acoustically. The pair formed Golden Retriever in 2008 and began to develop a language informed by the practices of free improvisation as well as the tradition of American experimental electronic composers like Alvin Curran & David Behrman. Golden Retriever creates music that is creatively challenging and structurally complex while remaining inviting and emotionally dynamic rather than adopting a confrontational stance toward the listener.

Seer, their second release for Thrill Jockey, was recorded and assembled over the course of two years at the artists’ studio “Worksound” in Portland, OR. The relaxed timetable gave Carlson and Sielaff an opportunity to write based around new instruments and techniques and to spend considerable time meticulously editing the work. This extends the process employed on their Thrill Jockey debut Occupied with the Unspoken, composing and arranging using editing as a compositional tool.

The opening track “Petrichor” shows Carlson using an 11-limit just intonation system and can, if listened to at a significant volume, create otoacoustic emissions: the generation of new resonance within the inner-ear as a rectification of two perfectly toned and opposing frequencies. The use of this phenomenon as musical material was pioneered by Maryanne Amacher in her sound installations of the 70s and 80s. The song “Sharp Stones” finds Sielaff weaving complex melodic phrases over Carlson’s bed of synth-processed piano sounds, toying with the gestures of modal free jazz. Their ability to move between abstract sound exploration and traditionally engaging musical structures is demonstrated perfectly on “Flight Song,” which features a mantra-like bass clarinet melody beholden to shimmering synthesizer patterns. Golden Retriever’s compositions are inviting and relentlessly listenable, embracing both emotional depth and wild abandon without betraying the hidden framework of complexity within.
