Bacau-born artist Raresh has had a huge impact on underground electronic music culture since stepping onto the scene at the turn of the millennium. Initially starting his career as a resident at Zebra Club on his home turf before meeting the Sunrise Crew, Rhadoo and Pedro at the venue and forming the [a:rpia:r] outfit – heavily endorsed by fellow fabric regular, Ricardo Villalobos. News of the burgeoning scene eventually spread beyond the Romanian border, leading to an international touring schedule for Raresh, including biannual appearances at fabric since 2008.

fabric 75, Maya Jane Coles’ stellar entry into the fabric series, marks another new chapter in her remarkable career. The multi-award-winning 26-year-old British-Japanese producer/DJ’s mix has proven such a formidable summer soundtrack, that fabric’s record label has decided to commit two of the standout tracks to wax, as part of its occasional 10″ vinyl sampler series.

The lead track ‘Premonition’ was created by Maya especially for fabric 75, and is a stunning deeper-than-deep groove with a wistful melody that manages to hint at both hope and melancholy. “I basically followed the pleasure principle when approaching the mix. I started to pick my favourite pieces of dance music regardless of age or sub-genre and didn’t really begin to structure the mix until all the tracks had been cleared, except for one. So as I began to throw the tracks together as spontaneously as possible, the structure of the mix began to take shape. I did a single take before I recorded the final version of the mix as it is now in order to keep it as lively and representative of a live DJ set as possible. I don’t think I’ve enjoyed myself as much working on a mix in the studio before!”

The mix itself is a captivating ride through Deetron’s most personal selections, with disparate sounds, scenes and styles all connected up with perfect sequencing and tight mixing. There’s everything from classic Chicago material by DJ Sneak and Gemini to material from Detroit stalwart Carl Craig via leftfield inclusions from Atoms For Peace. As well as some old classics there are modern gems from the fast rising likes of Marquis Hawkes and Seven Davis Jr, plus no nonsense techno inclusions from pioneers like Function and Marcel Dettmann. Elijah & Skilliam are arguably the foremost ambassadors of Grime. Having taken a scrupulous and avant-garde approach to the genre’s output, they have helped raise it to the forefront of the electronic music landscape. Their celebrated Rinse FM show has been representing the best of the scene for 5+ years. Their club nights were some of the first to focus on the talents of the producers, when at the time parties were more about the MCs. Officially returning with a bang last year, their FABRICLIVE residency has brought Grime back to the clubs in a big way.

Brushing off pressure to represent the whole of the scene, Elijah & Skilliam have created something that is current, but not necessarily based on the big tracks of recent times. And with less than a third of the tracks at the typical 140bpm Grime tempo, the mix showcases just how wide their sets can go without diluting their identity and their sound. The mix is peppered with exclusive studio collaborations and VIPs. Royal-T and Swindle built the Intro and Outro from scratch, adding live audio cuts from previous fabric parties; while MCs Newham Generals provided a couple of special versions – a Grime fan’s equivalent of spending a couple of hundred on a rare record according to Elijah. Club favourites ‘Twinkle’ by Swindle & Silkie, Darq E Freaker’s ‘666 Sauna’ and Swindle’s P-Funk-esque studio jam ‘Good Stay Bad’ are among a host of tracks that remained unreleased.

Maya Jane Coles, the multi-award-winning 26 year old British-Japanese producer/DJ, presents another new chapter in her remarkable career, following her critically-acclaimed debut album “Comfort” with fabric 75.

The meditative propulsive house and techno for which Maya is renowned spurred Rolling Stone to include the young star as one of their top 25 most influential DJs on the planet, and secured her place at the top end of the Resident Advisor poll. It’s not hard to see why. Maya’s DJing highlights include a record breaking Boiler Room, much lauded Essential Mixes for Radio 1, a guest mix for XLR8R’s hallowed 300th podcast, and live streamed mixes on Resident Advisor live from her residency at Richie Hawtin’s Enter at Space.

In addition to her own production projects, Maya is a prolific remixer, adding The XX, Ella Fitzgerald, Tiga vs Audion, Rudimental feat. Emile Sandé, Bonobo, Big Dope P, and Alex Jones to a list which already included Massive Attack, Gorillaz, Little Dragon, Lianne La Havas, The Orb, Phil Kieran, Maceo Plex and Tricky.

fabric 75 is a mix that avoids ornamental grooves in favour of fittingly percussive and musically rich simplicity; a raw house sound that is more mature and approachable than ever. The mix’s melodic qualities offer yet more wonderful insight into Maya’s music world, a rhythmic language spoken with the both the soft sonic variety and thunderous impact we’ve come to expect from Maya’s DJ performances. Wander with emotional caution, as deep chords dominate the mix and challenge the mere sight of mechanical beats.

Maya’s engaging atmospherics on fabric 75 are esoteric to say the least, and the result clearly guides the listener through her own personal and fascinating approach to dance music.

Kevin McAuley is the dark horse of the Hessle Audio triumvirate that also includes Pearson Sound and Ben UFO (both of whom have mixed previous Fabriclive CDs). He’s not flown totally under the radar, of course: the steady stream of singles he’s put out in recent times have been lapped up by DJs across the board.

His Fabriclive mix showcases his dark and bass-heavy DJing style—though the emphasis here is definitely on techno. The 27-track selection opens with an unreleased Pangaea track, “Recreational Slumming,” before weaving through material from the likes of Shifted, MGUN, Pev & Kowton, Speedy J, Oscar Mulero and Jamal Moss as The Sun God.

“I’ve never been happier with where I am and where I’m going as an artist,” McAuley says. “A lot has changed musically in the past few years, and having felt adrift at times it now feels like all my musical experiences have led naturally to this place.” Pangaea’s next appearance at fabric will take place on Friday, December 6th, as part of a three-room Hessle Audio takeover. The official Fabriclive 73 launch party will take place in February 2014.

It might not always feel that way when you’re trying to squeeze across the dance floor, but Room 2, with its steady diet of thumping techno, can be fabric’s comfort zone. In that sense, Ben Sims’ fabric 73 mix has achieved his stated aim of capturing Room 2’s “perfect but elusive” vibe, delivering a set of pure 4/4 thump.

A DJ for nearly 30 years, the Essex-born artist has been in the game for twice as long as fabric, and he’s hit upon a winning formula he sees no point in changing—namely, bouncy dance floor techno performed on three decks. It’s a tactile and spontaneous style seemingly at odds with the way this mix was constructed: recorded in separate sections and then edited in Ableton in a similar manner to Richie Hawtin’s DE9: Closer To The Edit. Yet on fabric 73, the rapid-fire cutting between tracks (which reflects Sims’ past as a hip-hop DJ) couldn’t be farther from Hawtin’s long segues and molecular mixing. Sims simply zeroes straight in on the 90 seconds or so he needs of each track—almost always the parts that stomp around like an elephant in steel toecaps.

But while there are stretches where Sims seems to be sadistically piling on the pressure, he’s far from forgotten the fun or the funk. He doesn’t pull out anything as cheesy as his bootleg of Sylvester’s “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real),” but parts of this are just downright daft in the best possible way. The rubber mallet noise on Sims’ “Break Glass” is more silly hardcore than serious techno. The rave revivalism of “Joy Rider” could be a blast from Sims’ acid house past, and the elastic electro touches on the James Ruskin remix of Marcel Dettmann’s “Corebox” should get you grinning like an acid smiley face. Like Room 2 on a Saturday night, you pretty much know what you’ll get with Ben Sims. If that’s what you’re after then you won’t be disappointed.

Cassy Britton’s status as a DJ is hard to rival: she currently holds residencies at four top clubs—Panorama Bar, Trouw, Rex Club and Output—and used to work behind the counter at famed Berlin record shop Hard Wax. “The tracks on the mix all represent what I love about electronic music, and what I love playing,” she says. “Simply, each track is individually beautiful–there is not much more to add.” Her 17-track effort includes tracks from Norm Talley, John Talabot, Basic Soul Unit, Emptyset and Marco Zenker among others.

fabric 71 will be Cassy’s fourth commercially released mix, following 2006’s Panorama Bar 01 and two subsequent efforts for Cocoon. She adds: “The project has come at a perfect time for me in terms of me being able to communicate where I am at artistically. I have aimed to get back to the roots of what this should be about for every DJ—namely playing records for the love of playing records—and not because of anything else.” The CD launch party will take place at fabric in London on Saturday, August 17th, with Cassy playing alongside Craig Richards, Basic Soul Unit and more.
