With releases on the likes of Supplement Facts, Hypercolour and My Favourite Robot records already behind him, Lomez is a man who requires little introduction to fans of the discerning side of the electronic music spectrum. Together with his production partner Symbol (and, of course, Noir), he also enjoyed one of Pete Tong’s Essential New Tunes of 2013 thanks to ”Lost Again”, a stunning record that rightly saw him draw praise from numerous quarters.
He follows up the latter here with an equally stunning EP on fledgling Spanish imprint Sub_Urban, with Always On Time, an EP that again goes some way to explaining his diversity and his confidence behind the production desk. A brisk walk through the realms of contemporary house and disco, the original is a bassline-loaded slice of funk that showcases the producers’ signature deep, soulful and sexy sound with some aplomb, while Symbol’s sultry vocal contribution helps lend it an added dose of emotion.
The second of the two originals is another laid back gem, with ”Allegehny” the sort of track that basks in a warm, summery glow. Catchy and always discerning, its dancefloor credentials are impeccable. Sebas Ramis & Guri then team up for the first of the remixes, with ”Always On Time” brought to a spiky, more whimsical and sun-glistened place. Finally, Symbol’s soulful vocals make for a memorable late night affair, and they’re given a whole new dimension on Gaol’s remix, whereby the producer goes slightly off-kilter in search of his kicks. In all, it’s majestic stuff throughout.

Magic sometimes happens with the wonders of the internet and digital age of the music industry. ‘Lost Again’ is a great example of just that.
The project started in Baltimore by Lomez and the singer Symbol. They then travelled to Florida to get the touch of Atnarko and ended up in Noir’s hands (and studio) in Denmark before the beautiful song reached its end result.

‘Lost Again’ is an instant charmer thanks to an intro sprinkled with magical chime sounds before beautifully unfolding into a cut that has so many expertly intertwined layers – evidence of the trio’s collaborative production prowess. A pulsing futuristic bass takes charge whilst the voice of Symbol gives the production extra character as it’s melodically cast over full-bodied synths. The package also comes with a ‘Raw Club Cut’ aimed for the tech house floors which is noticeable courtesy of a prominent increase in percussive weight and the distortion of vocals.

On remix duties is British producer James Welsh whose thunderous bassline provides a dark and decadent flavour capable of injecting vigour into the stalest of dance floor environments. Meanwhile Patrick Chardronnet demonstrates what Berlin has to offer with a deeper 303 led techno journey in comparison which features a marriage of Symbol’s vocals and ambient heartfelt synths which together juxtapose nicely to lull you into a subterranean groove.

Emerging from their 15 year celebration, Viva continues on strong with Afterhours, a 9-track album from Baltimore-based producer Lomez. This thing’s got as much range as it does depth with subtle yet sophisticated tracks, aimed at taking things deeper post bar-closing time and beyond. Starting with the jazzed-out and airy “Summerside feat. Atnarko”, things quickly enter deep and dark tech-house territory with “On My Mind”. From there we take a breather with the washed-out and atmospheric downtempo cut “Distance and Love” before picking up the tempo again and heading back into dancey and modern-retro vibes with “Smiles in My Sleep feat. Phillip Charles”. “Algonquin” takes us even further with a stabby bass line and stompy rhythm. “Breed” is the techiest cut on the album, hallmarked by its brooding bass work and robotic vocal line, an afterhours track if there ever was one. “Wet Sands feat. Andrew Grant” follows with a slow-burning house line. “Wes Pratt feat. Andrew Grant” keeps the energy levels up and the acid flowing before finally closing with the dubbed-out and dreamy disco cut “Dig”.
