Summertime and slamming Techno never seem to go out of style here here in Brooklyn even in the blistering heat, and with that in mind, for our next digital drop we present Hooved, an established Italian producer of tech-house and deep house with a significant discography dating back a few years now. Of the many labels hes already released on, Arnaud le Texier and James Warrens Safari Electronique, an Atcha sublabel, Londons Apparel Music, and Alessio Mereus Amam are the most established, but then we wouldnt really expect these kind of exotic, wandering grooves from more obvious sources. Rather, were captivated by his fusion of minimal tropes with much more adventurous sonic material and also by the lively, jump up feeling of his music. Its something that spells rooftops and Sunday afternoons to us, and were happy to have it as the latest listening for THEMAs followers. While still rooted in the minimalism hes known for, the opener G-Tool shows Hooved moving closer to old school, drum-machine driven house music with its upbeat jack that sets a propulsive pace to lead off the release. Before and After sees the producer looking back towards his roots, but in a complex and layered fashion. Certainly theres aspects of so-called minimal techno here with the nagging vocal sample and stripped, chugging percussion, but the midsection of the track builds steadily with a wealth of idiosyncratic details like the jazzy drum and bass breakdown and organic electronics that swirl around the drums. Weve always been proud to support Laurine Frost, and his remix of Before and After shows exactly why by foregrounding the short vocal passages of the original but juxtaposing them over an even more bizarre and experimental collage of electronics and percussion. 12 Minutes couldnt be more appropriately titled, and it thumps along for that exact duration in a dubby, funky mode as the electronics wind their way around dueling drums and flute. The closer Orion opts for pure, pad-driven deep house and reminds us of many a sunset or moonrise weve spent somewhere in Brooklyn outside on an August evening. Text by: Albert Freeman
