David Van Tieghem X Ten – FRKWYS Vol. 10: Fits & Starts

Artist: David Van Tieghem X Ten
Title Of Album: FRKWYS Vol. 10: Fits & Starts
Year Of Release: 12 nov 2013
Label: Rvng Intl. / FRKWYS10
Genre: Experimental, Electronic
Quality: MP3
Bitrate: 320 kbps
Total Time: 00:43:52
Total Size: 99 mb

Tracklist:
01 Slippery Slope
02 Cooler Heads Prevail
03 Fits & Starts (Maxmillion Dunbar Remix)

For the tenth volume of FRKWYS, composer, percussionist and sound designer David Van Tieghem alongside ten younger artists from across the avant spectrum become a bulletin of Fits & Starts.

In July of 2012, RVNG Intl. was invited to participate in Bulletin Boards, a group exhibition at Venus Over Manhattan curated by White Columns’ gallery director Matthew Higgs. An extension of an ongoing project which resides in the entrance of White Columns’ downtown New York gallery, Bulletin Boards featured 24 artists / entities, each given a new bulletin board as an inspirational starting point.

In 1981, David Van Tieghem produced the experimental music video Ear To The Ground. The film features Van Tieghem “playing” downtown New York City, a world in which Van Tieghem established his rhythmic roots as a member of the Love Of Life Orchestra, a frequent collaborator with Laurie Anderson, and a player on Steve Reich’s Music For 18 Musicians, Robert Ashley’s Perfect Lives (Private Parts) / Perfect Lives and David Byrne and Brian Eno’s My Life in the Bush With Ghosts among other seminal recordings including his own.

In Ear To The Ground, all city surfaces become communications – or bulletins – under Van Tieghem’s twiddling, thwacking and thumping thumbs. Partially inspired by this and by our blank but physically limited canvas space, Van Tieghem agreed to take part in a sequence of improvised performances and creative editing to become part of our FRKWYS series.

We also invited ten younger musicians to post objects to the board. A cross section of present day New York artists were represented by way of Sam Hillmer as Diamond Terrifier (with the aid of Max Alper), Future Shuttle, Georgia, Roberto Carlos Lange as Helado Negro, Darren Ho, Eli Keszler, Hiro Kone and Megafortress, alongside the regionally sympathetic Blanche Blanche Blanche and Maxmillion Dunbar.

In place of business cards, broadsheets, and flyers, the objects / communications contributed were broken toasters, firecrackers, 2x4s, thunder drums and customized electronics, each intended as a percussive device. On opening night, the bulletin board, disguised as assemblage, welcomed David’s dialogue.

In the spirit of Ear To The Ground’s infinite conversation, Van Tieghem returned to Venus Over Manhattan to “play” the bulletin board without an audience. The process of Van Tieghem discovering and responding to the objects / bulletins again was multi-tracked in high definition.

These recordings were then presented to the ten contributing musicians for further translation, “remix” and interpretation. For the final sequence, the unique pieces were delivered to Van Tieghem to edit and embellish as the sound collages presented across two album length sides of our tenth volume in the FRKWYS series.

Due out December 11th, Music For Shut-Ins is described as ”a collection of hits, misses, new loves, and future head scratchers running the gamut from floor-ready beat tracks (Legowelt) to post chillout room bleep-hop (Daywalker & CF) to industro-wave anti-beat experimentation (Svengalisghost) with no restrictions or limitations…[It’s] a document of the immediate energy surrounding these musicians here and now, maybe one can call it club music for people who hate going to the club? Or simply ‘Music for Shut-Ins.’”

A Sagittariun keeps his identity under wraps. “I don’t feel the need to have to explain who I am or where I have come from, what my backstory is, etc.,” he once said. “There’s little point to what I am doing if I have to explain what my birth name is… I would rather simply be known as A Sagittariun, the ninth sign.” All we can say for sure is that he’s based in Bristol, and since 2011 has released five cosmic and stylistically open-ended EPs, all of which were well-received here on RA. Like those records, Dream Ritual will come out on A Sagittariun’s label, Elastic Dreams. It features a guest appearance from Skip McDonald, a veteran guitarist who played on early hip-hop classics like “White Lines” and “The Message.”

Jamal Moss’s Mathematics sub-label +++ is responsible for what is in my opinion some of his finest work. An outlet for his more experimental cosmic house and techno. ‘A Synthetic Love Life’ is an eight track double 12” kicking off on the A-side with a bangin’ sci-fi techno stomper with tough rugged industrial beat. This is followed by a dirty overdriven distorted drum machine workout that sounds like it could collapse at any given moment. The production raw, dirty and lo-fi. There’s no frills here, just raw machine funk.

Over on the B-side is a tough chicago Jacker with Jamal’s glorious synths sounding like the voices of ancient machines. Then we get a stomping track with a free flowing jazzy feel.

On the second disc the first tune has beautiful, soulful chiming melodies followed by melancholy soundscapes on the second track. Over on side D is a goose bump inducing melody that sounds somehow familiar, it’s pure electronic soul that gradually becomes enveloped in tougher industrial machine sounds. A real highlight of the set. Finally there’s some skittering and stuttering rim-shots and sharp hi-hats creating darker unnerving vibes, eventually becoming swallowed up by bubbling caustic acid.

There’s a live/ jam/ improvised feel throughout which is always refreshing in electronic music that increasingly feels like it’s over quantized, over produced and rigidly tied to the computer clock. Outstanding stuff from quite possibly my favourite producer on planet earth. I’m not crazy about every track he does but when his tunes hit that sweet spot I’m in pure sonic heaven. Highly recommended.

Wanda Group – A Slab About Being Held Captive

01 How to Learn How to Concentrate
02 No Mouth or Transparency and Variable

Washed up on the shores of Brighton UK, we find “A Slab About Being Held Captive” laying there quietly in the sand. This soaking enigma is the latest creation of Louis Johnstone, following up an influx of recent vinyl on Opal Tapes, Notown, Where To Now?, and Svetlana Industries. Since their debut release “Bass Urine” on NNA in 2011, Wanda and the girls have matured to a new point of refinement, sinking deeper into the careful organization of disconcerting sounds. “A Slab” truly is a seasick collage, with a pervading aqueous essence flowing throughout the two side-long pieces, carrying along with it fragments of field and domestic recordings and sample clutter. Syrupy waves of sound meld into one another with cinematic pacing, forming a gelatinous backdrop for hard cut interjections of concréte style sample manipulation, lending themselves to an air of confusing tension. As the liquid bath abruptly turns to slate, a group of gulls squawk at a bubble filled with muffled porno moans as they glide by. Body sounds and animal conversations are drowned out by the mechanical purrs of an industrial assembly line, sputtering and choking their last breaths as they struggle to stay afloat. Maddening tones seem to permeate from within, sizzling their way through the stereo field like two magnets dancing, drilling through the headspace. This hypnotic phenomena forces the mind inward, reducing it to a skull full of opiate brain mush and half-cooked soggy memories. These collections of moments may fall shamelessly into near-nothingness at any given time, eventually refilling themselves with sound in a cyclical rising and falling, perhaps acting as an abstract reflection on mental states of indifference, alienation, or just general life terror and bleakness. Wanda’s ability to maintain compositional fluidity throughout such a dynamic range of materials is reinforced by an original sense of movement and pacing, and the ability to form a creative symbiosis between cold sterility and organic warmth. Although ultimately, it’s probably best left to the artist’s own words:

“WANDA GROUP IS OR COULD BE OR WANTS TO BE A GROUP
IT IS NOT
I SHOULD BE BUT I AM AFRAID IT NEVER BECAME ONE
EITHER DUE TO A LACK OF FRIENDSHIP, KINDNESS OR POUNDING HUMAN REGRET ?
WHO KNOWS ?
WANDA GROUP TRIES TO MAKE EARTH MUSIC
THIS COULD BE INSIDE OR ABOVE OR RIGHT ON THE LAND
I THINK THAT YOU SHOULD LOOK AT CONCRETE OR MOUNTAINS TO TRY AND MOVE YOURSELF
ART GALLERIES WORK BUT SOMETIMES I THINK PEOPLE NEED TO LOOK AT THE STUFF THAT IS GROUND OR SHOVED RIGHT INTO THE EARTH OR HAS BECOME THE EARTH
ALL IS ONE SORT OF THING ETC
WANDA GROUP DOES TRY TO LOVE IN A MASSIVE WAY
IT IS ALL VERY SERIOUS AT POINTS AND SOMETIMES I NEEDS TO BE
WANDA GROUP REALLY SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO FUCKING SPEAK OR TYPE (MAYBE ONLY EXIST IN A STATUE ?)”

Alex Cuervo has been rattling skulls for years in punk & garage bands like The Hex Dispensers, Blacktop, This Damn Town & Feast of Snakes. 2011 saw the release of two solo EPs under his own name, exploring his interest in darker, synth-oriented punk music. Since then, the Texan native has not only honed his skills on the synthesizer, but constructed this 13-song suite of instrumentals that owe a serious debt to the pioneers of late-seventies horror soundtracks like John Carpenter, Italo-prog masters Goblin & the work of German pioneers Tangerine Dream.

“Espectrostatic” unfolds like the soundtrack to a lost horror classic, with it’s pulsing synths & ominous passages inferring the unleashing of an ancient, horror creating a Lovecraft-ian musical journey. The tracks range from near ambient clouds of dread (”Consulting The Necronauts”) to throbbing tunes that could almost be mistaken for the goth-club floor-fillers created by Skinny Puppy & Soft Cell (”Phantom Swarm”). This is music made for the night & all things that reside therein. The LP edition of “Espectrostatic” is pressed on 150gm black vinyl & includes a download code. Features sleeve design from reknowned designer/illustrator Jason Willis.

Offered as metaphor and delivered as analogy…
The Blizzard That Birthed Her is the continuing echo of this year’s Home Normal success, Book Of The Folded Forest. Birthed as two original Orla Wren tracks ‘Five Acre Ladder’ and ‘Mountains And Wishbones’ which were recorded in the same session, Tui then worked the cello, bass and vocals of Aaron Martin into two alternative versions of each track, making up the 4 tracks on the 10” vinyl for Facture.
He then offered the same to Isnaj Dui who contributed some flute for him to then create the two versions with her as guest. To complete the companion 8 track letter pressed CD version the two “reprise” versions were created by Tui utilizing parts from the other tracks.

The Blizzard That Birthed Her cannot be called an album in the strictest sense. It consists of two original tracks, each one of which has been recorded four times including two separate takes of each with different collaborators. At their most basic – the opening, unaccompanied blueprint of Five Acre Ladder – they build and swirl on the sparest of electronic melodies over a plateau of drone, creating worlds that are at once misty and earthy. Orla Wren’s individual pieces are each like a single exhalation drawn out and slowed so that every particle of air, every bit of woodland mist, every icy molecule of breath is discernible. And like breaths that are given personality by external forces – tiredness, passion, fear – each of these pieces is markedly different, whilst retaining the overarching character of the species. The atonal bells and wordless vocals on the Aaron Martin take of Five Acre Ladder give the tune a processional, pagan quality, while the flute of Isnaj Dui suggests a subtler, more lithe form of movement. Martin’s cello takes centre stage on his version of the second track, Mountains And Wishbones, which has the most discernible build and fade (or inhalation and exhalation) of anything here.

When a musician’s artistic vision is as singular as that of Orla Wren – the collaborative arm of electro-acoustic soundscaper Tui – it serves little purpose to compare it with other performers. Indeed, The Blizzard That Birthed Her appears to owe as much to sound art, field recording and sculpture as it does to folk, or electronic popular music. In particular, the variety of land art as practiced by Robert Smithson or Richard Long comes to mind. The circular or cyclical nature of these tracks mirrors the use of circles as archetypal shapes in much of Long’s work. And of course the organic side of this music, the idea of growth within nature as a basic constituent of performance or sculpture, is something that Long has been doing throughout his career.

In addition to these eight intriguing and surprisingly filmic compositions we get a bonus track, another recording with Aaron Martin called The Cup Of Remembered Things. Relying on eerie found sounds and the occasional supernatural vocal sample it serves as a delicate coda to an impressive record that wears the ambition of its concept lightly.

Transcendental Animal Numbers is the second entry in Jan St. Werner’s Fiepblatter Catalogue. The work is comprised of carefully edited sounds derived from computer algorithms. There are no intentional references to traditional ideas of tuning, meter or spectrum. Rather, there are unexpected shifts of sonic scales, sudden frequency modulations andextreme panoramic shifts that produce an unconventional chunk of condensed acoustic information. Still the resulting compositions are arranged seamlessly and unpredictably as if they were field recordings of animals in the wilderness. The work is a representation of an acoustic organism where no sound is derived from any living creature or acoustic source, instead it is artificiality incorporating the irrational and unpredictable into a logical mathematical system to create a black box in which sound can scatter. Werner likens Transcendental Animal Numbers to Schrödinger’s “cat in a box” experiment that proves that quantum physics is the unpredictability of one particle simultaneously existing in various states.

Dug out from the nearly lost files of an “old, forgotten computer” are the nine tracks which make up the forthcoming mini-album from Applescal, From A to Sea. One of the tunes crafted by the Dutch producer between 2008 and 2012, “Screams” is a particularly lush and sprawling cut which would have felt right at home on Dreaming in Key, Applescal’s most recent full-length effort released via his own Atomnation imprint earlier this year. The production presents its grainy textures, smoldering melodies, and other rich sonic layers atop an IDM-indebted shuffle, landing the track somewhere along the lines of a more stoney Clark or a subterranean M83 (during his instrumental days, of course). “Screams” and eight other recently recovered tracks from Applescal’s archives can be found on From A to Sea when it drops on December 9.

In the 1970s the American composer Henry Flynt started a series of pieces under the title „New American Ethnic Music“. In so doing he worked together native styles of music such as blues, Country or Hillbilly with electronic production methods to make something altogether new. So far in Germany it has never been attempted to rework folklore electronically for a compilation. However, this picture changes if one redefines the idea of who the population is. Incomers have brought new „national anthems“ to Germany, which means: even the Portuguese Fado, the African Gnawa, the Croatian Klapa or the Vietnamese Quan ho are these days at home in Germany.
With the cultural project „Heimatlieder aus Deutschland“ (“Native songs from Germany”) founded by former Spex editor Mark Terkessidis and label manager Jochen Kühling all the various styles of traditional folk music now found in Germany has been collected. Thirteen of the songs recorded for the project have now been transformed by contemporary electronic producers to present a „New German Ethnic Music“. But why remixes? For one thing electronic music has recently focused a lot on the past (Ghost Music, Hypnagogic Pop etc.) – electronic editing is well suited to follow the effects of the immigrant music which the „imaginary national anthems“ has created. Furthermore the project’s instigators were curious how „electronic musicians“ would handle folk music and folk songs which is a hugely difficult task. To this end artists were sought out who could get along with the idea of each music style and who are known to already have experimented with the human voice. The results are as varied as the music styles and Djs involved. Some melodies remain completely intact while others are abstracted beyond recognition.
Margaret Dygas’ associative approach ensured that she presents a polish song about a girls arranged marriage with a claustrophobic feeling. With his remix of the Marrabenta of Mozambique Mark Ernestus has continued the rhythmic experiments he is known for with Jeri Jeri. Thomas Mahmoud translated Gnawa into dub and finally Ulrich Schnauss turned the song of the Italian Chorus of „Donni So“ into a hymn for the horizon-expanding power of migration.
Hopefully this compilation will also expand some horizons.

Sean Canty and Miles Whittaker are busy fellows. Putting their individual solo projects aside, as Demdike Stare they’ve released three EPs in 2013—the acclaimed Testpressing series of breakbeat-inspired material—and the Weight Of Culture cassette. There’s also, reportedly, a fourth Testpressing on the way in the immediate future. As with their last foray into the cassette market, Post Collapse is a mix of experimental and abstract music with no tracklist, though a press release promises everything from weird pop to jazz over the course of the tape’s 70 minutes

Format: MP3
Quality: 320 kbps
Size: 72 mb
Genre: Electronic
Style: Electropop, House, Experimental, Electronic

Hayat Zor is a beautiful blend of rave-nostalgia, 80s electro-pop and Italo, all shot through with a melancholic, wistful air. Working with analog synths, vintage drum machines, live instrumentation, and the help of a few friends and collaborators along the way.

Encompassing four original productions and two remixes from Gavin Russom and Petrels, ‘Hayat Zor’ is a collection on which emotional resonance and technical expertise sit side by side. Dancefloor nous, enabled through a love of Italo Disco and Balearic convention, is a strong presence on the EP, with Wright pairing this quality with his enduring spiritual kinship with the music of British new wave artists such as New Order, Cabaret Voltaire and Devo. Although such reference points can be clearly grasped by the listener it is, as ever, to Wright’s immense credit that he employs them with such deftness he could be considered every bit an equal. Selaxon Lutberg – Simboli Accidentali

Selaxon Lutberg is the ambient project of the secluded Italian artist Andrea Penso. After two albums, a collaboration record with Subinterior and various EPs, ‘Simboli Accidentali’ (‘Accidental Symbols’) constitutes his third full length record and third release on Denovali Records.

As most of his works, the new album is strongly linked to Andrea’s biography. Indeed, he states: “In a long video-interview by Donatella Baglivo, the Russian filmmaker Andrej Tarkovsky says that childhood ‘is the moment in human life that determines all his future, especially if future will be linked to art, inner life and psychological problems. In other words, childhood feeds all the creativity of the adult
period.’ Composing this album I tried to focus on accidental symbols mostly born during my childhood, tried to study them not in detail but in their essence. The ‘subjective sounds’ of this album were born from these thoughts and considerations.” To support this motive, the album artwork contains an impressionistic story from Andrea’s childhood.

“Simboli Accidentali” is composed of 8 tracks, which have been recorded at Andrea’s home between 2010 and 2012 and mastered by Miles Whittaker (Demdike Stare). The typically warm and encasing songs are mostly made with processed and unrecognizable guitars, an old and cheap organ and loops from ruined tapes and vinyls. The resulting sound can be found somewhere in the vast landscape spanned by the ambient/postrock of Labradford and SSlowdive’s Pygmalion era, the analogue and decayed loops of Philip Jeck and William Basinski and the cinematic feelings of Stars of the lid and David Lynch’s drones. Time to explore.

Don’t be fooled by the corporate lustre of their titles, it’s all part of Mind Dynamics‘ desire to subvert the hi-tech, faster-better-stronger mindset of twenty-first century living. Foregoing the clean lines and HD-quality modern software has bestowed, The Brooklyn duo Daniel Freshwater and Brian Whateverer create decayed, feric-scarred techno. While their cover art and titles certainly the same obsession with branding and capitalist semiotics as vaporwave artists, the duo approach their music with far less ambiguity as to whose side they’re really on, and it ain’t the side of corporate muzak-making. Recorded live, these scrambled signals possess a twisted vitality—the rhythmic snap of “Juice Cleanse 2″ feels like a Night Slugs cut buried beneath a dense crust of flotsam—which clatters and dissipates as if caught between long-lost AM bandwidths. This is music at its most deliberately abstruse, mussed up, and, somehow, vital
