Tsembla is the musical work of Marja Johansson, a Swedish-Finnish
artist operating out of Turku, Finland. Utilizing a wide range of
instruments, electronics, objects and manipulated samples, the music
of Tsembla rides on waves of warped melodies, fluttering rhythms,
abstract voices and mutating textures, crossbreeding the known and the
imaginary.

Nouskaa henget (Spirits, rise!) is her third release, after the 7”
Tuplafiesta, released by Jan Anderzén’s Vauva label in 2009 and the LP
Fauna on the Finnish Ikuisuus label in 2011. Loosely assembled, rough
edged compositions, rich in details, come together into odd
instrumental miniatures in an almost-pop format, venturing into fourth
world territory from a clattering, wheezing and boiling DIY kitchen
inspired by Moondog, Ruth White, Raymond Roussel, LAFMS, Jon Hassell,
Anton Bruhin, René Daumal, Suzanne Ciani and folk musics of the Andes
and Asia. Two of the tracks on the album are made in collaboration
with flute wizard Antti Tolvi (of Rauhan Orkesteri, Lauhkeat Lampaat
etc.) layering up Tolvi’s overdubbed flutes with hand percussion, tape
snippets and electronics.

This 3LP Box-Set presented by the godfather of the genre of Dark Ambient/Industrial, B. Lustmord, putting into its focus the very early works recorded between 1980-83 including previously unreleased material and the very first Lustmord recording of all, in it’s primitive glory.

Lustmord’s intense and aggressive Live Performances in the early 80’s had been recognized by other Industrial Bands like Throbbing Gristle and SPK, the latter leading to a cooperation with Graeme Revell for many years including being a member of SPK and taking over their label Side Effects.

His outstanding skills as an artist and sound designer extended into several further collaborations with artists as such as Current 93, Nurse With Wound, Chris & Cosey, Robert Rich John Balance (Coil), Melvins and Tool, and since the early 90’s gams, television and over forty Hollywood movies like The Crow and Underworld.

LP1 is a remastered version of Lustmord’s first and very sought after LP release on Nocturnal Emissions’ Sterile Records.

LP2 delivers en early version of a track from the first LP plus intense live recordings from 1981.

LP3 provides several unreleased recordings from 1980-83, including one with John Balance, plus compilation tracks from various Cassette Culture labels of that period including Third Mind’s “Rising from the Red Sand”.

London electronic producer Actress has announced a new album, Ghettoville. The triple-LP release is out January 28 via Werkdiscs/Ninja Tune. That’s the cover art, above.

Ghettoville follows 2012’s R.I.P., but according to a press release, it’s really the sequel to Actress’ 2008 debut, Hazyville, “sharing a similar rugged style.” Hazyville will get a remastered vinyl release as part of the Ghettoville box set edition, which also includes a 32-page art book.

The Ghettoville press release includes a statement suggesting this may be the final Actress album. “Ghettoville is the bleached out and black tinted conclusion of the Actress image,” it reads. “A fix is no longer a release, it’s a brittle curse. Zero satisfaction, no teeth, pseudo artists running rampant, but the path continues.

A few years ago I was commissioned by a film company in California to create a musical score for a film inspired by the Hitchcock 1954 film Rear Window, but with a more surrealist, two-sided viewer plot. As filming hadn’t begun, I was given the screenplay and timeline, and asked to make specific music that might fit with the themes in those pages, which also included an overture, intermission, and exit music. I recorded the music at home and in a studio provided by the film company in Silverlake, California, and finished a week before the first draft deadline was to be submitted. Surprisingly, before I even delivered any of the music, I was informed that the entire project was cancelled. Several years later, the score for the film of the same title is finally seeing the light of day. It is available on vinyl in an edition of 300 copies by the label Humming Conch from Berlin, with cover art by Peter Lograsso.

Two years ago, Colorlist released ‘The Fastest Way To Become The Ocean’ on Serein; a four-track EP released on 10″ vinyl as part of the Seasons series. The band’s core members (Charles Gorczynski and Charles Rumback) were both living in Chicago at that time. Shortly after the release of the EP, Gorczynski moved west to Oakland, California, leaving the pair on opposite sides of the United States. The two have somehow managed to keep working together despite the huge distance between them, so we’ll forgive the couple of years it took for ‘Sky Song’, the album I present to you now, to come to fruition.

Sky Song is Colorlist’s third album proper and their first full length release since 2010. The music is deep, organic and involving – it feels like a spiritual successor to their 2008 album, Lists, which had a similarly robust and weighty sound. This may be thanks in part to the complement of modular synths which are present again on Sky Song. The deep, harmonic quality of analogue synthesizers seems a perfect companion to the pair’s usual instruments, occupying the mid-range of frequencies between Rumback’s kicks and toms, and Gorczynski’s woodwinds.

As with their previous work, Sky Song traverses a rich and wide sonic terrain. It’s not music that’s easy to classify because of the array of influences which mould the sound and indeed the improvised nature of many of the pieces. Importantly, though, Sky Song feels focused and coherent as a whole. The album has everything; peaceful and serene passages of music that make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, deep, driving rhythms that make your feet twitch and occassionally, music that erupts like a firework exploding in the sky.

Colorlist don’t have to stick to one style to establish a cohesive ‘whole’; there is something deeper common to these tracks that ties them all together. There is a quality to the pieces, a kind of airy, openness that I associate with being outdoors. It’s a distillation of a certain feeling, walking in the woods perhaps, the sun dappling the earth below your feet, a warm breeze on the back of your neck; magical music.

Dissolved‘s last venture was a shared excursion with Nonima; Paul Daniels’ latest is a solo outing, a little less industrial in nature but still tailored for dance floors. A few tracks are obvious highlights, but the album as a whole is consistently engaging.

By virtue of its unusual juxtapositions, the 10-minute “Forgotten Processes” leaps from the album and runs around the room with its spangles and decals falling off. The track begins with recessed organ and a female spoken word monologue about working in a darkroom. It’s only been a few years since the darkroom career dissolved, a victim of digital processing, but already the thought of developing film in the dark produces a sense of nostalgia. Lisa Stampfli’s vocals recall Sina Hübner of Psychobitch: confident yet wistful, with a touch of defiance. As she speaks of her own undeveloped life and stops wearing her mask, one can sense a growing temporal displacement. Twirling patterns of drums and synth surround her voice like waterspouts. Originality is key; this is likely the first song to include the lyric, “I’m replacing water with silver bromide.”

Of the other dance tracks, “Stickleback Red” is the most effective, due to a 90-second outro that pumps up the drums while eliminating all extraneous sounds. This percussive jam would be well-served by a remix; perhaps it’s time to give Nomina a call again! As for the track title, it may refer to either a fish or an Australian wine, but since it’s an instrumental, few will ask. ”Your Age in Shark Years” adds party banter, IDM textures and a layer of sampled 80s-style vox; “Selmantrasm” is the album’s speed demon at 146 b.p.m..

The finale “On Board the Deuterium Arc” is a risk that pays off, a fifteen-minute track that serves as a musical reflection of the ultraviolet spectrum, the practice of spectroscopy and the danger of looking too closely into the brilliance of discharged light. (As a certain New Jersey artist once wrote, “Mama always told me not to look into the eyes of the sun; but Mama, that’s where the fun is!”) This rotating instrumental never settles on a single pattern for too long, in tune with the natural variances in light gradation. As time passes, it contacts and folds over itself until one is no longer sure where it begins or ends, like a ball of yarn whose ends have been lost. The spell is only broken once, in the middle of the piece, with the spoken words, “Bass. Drums. The D.J.” – rather unnecessary since one would normally be aware of these three things in a club. Such minor indulgences can be forgiven in the service of the beat. (Richard Allen)

One of two new releases from Brian Pyle (the other being ‘Interval Signals’), Light That Comes is a rich exploration of Ensemble Economique’s range and power. With a palpable sense of the sublime throughout, the listener is guided through drones like the pillars and buttresses of a cathedral for a sombre new religion, into the sounds of the ocean (somehow elegiac), flute tones springing up in the fog like gravestones, and fallen kosmische. These are followed by the wonderfully odd ‘As the Train Leaves Tonight,’ a version of Spandau Ballet’s ‘True’ produced from within the shadow universe, featuring crashing waves of reverb, staccato chords and tommy-gun drums. Similarly, ‘Radiate Through Me’ is a shoegazy torch song of sorts, sluggishly drifting along on beams of spectacular light. The brilliantly unique continuum between drone and pop traversed here makes ‘Light That Comes’ a key listen.

‘In 2012 I received a scholarship from the Leverhulme Trust for a one-year Artist in Residency at the UCL Urban Laboratory in London, to introduce sound as an art practice to urban scholars and students. As part of my research I decided to dérive the city.

I spent full days and sometimes nights sweeping the streets and its interiors for sound – walking and listening with no route or intention. A city without sound does not exist. Every location, passageway, alley, road, park, and pub contains its own world of isolated sound events and patterns – the sound of a shopping bag caught by the wind on the asphalt of a busy street when a bus passes by. What seems to be merely a bus is also a cacophony of sounds, a sound world in itself: hydraulics, breaks, interior noise, honking, public announcements, humans, rolling bottles, cell phones, mp3 players. The rattle of an air-conditioning unit in an old pub toilet gradually develops its broken down sound over many years, creating a raga for it own demise. Nobody seems to hear it. Is it there? The choice of sound varies; it’s a personal selection, some sounds made it into this composition, many hours of recording didn’t.

Sound composition can alter space and time and transform a specific location and experience into an imaginary world.
