Terrence Dixon lives up to his billing as Detroit’s premiere enigma with a new album on Nick Dunton’s Surface Ltd label issued with the minimum of fanfare. Given the way in which Dixon’s sublime Tresor long player from 2012 was announced, such tactics should be expected. Badge Of Honor arrives at the end of another prolific year for Dixon, who has ploughed his creative juices into the reduction label he started as an outlet for Population One material and issued records for Sino, Monique Musique, Polytone Recordings and Surface. This fifteen track set was apparently over a year in the making and is described by the label as “raw, all-encompassing techno cuts alongside some choice left-field experiments”. As the tracklisting suggests, Dixon has fully embraced Surface’s nautical aesthetic whilst the music is steadfastly Detroit techno delivered with his own distinct vision.

Sk’p is a name that is instantly recognizable to those who are into some speeded up, playful, incredibly clean but detailed glitch tunes and not a stranger to chiptune madness as well. But that’s just one side of him.
A very prolific and active producer hailing from Belgium, he decided to release on Crazy-Language a very different output from what he usually does, being slowing things down while still retaining his trademark sound of beautiful immediate melodies, clicky beats and a very precise song structure.
Inside Astravel are half a dozen of smooth, slow-paced classic IDM compositions that take no time on getting a warm and fuzzy feeling out of you. It’s simple, effective and very fun to re-listen time and time again, so you can start digging deeper onto all the nifty little details that are present inside. Complementing the six solid tunes Sk’p has to offer, you can still count on a couple of remixes from two of the label’s finest: Huron and Enabl.ed. supercodex is the final album of the Ryoji Ikeda’s trilogy on raster-noton since 2005 (1st: dataplex, 2nd: test pattern) that has been exploring the potentials between “data of sound” and “sound of data”. Ikeda integrated, differentiated and re/de/meta-constructed the music of previous 2 albums and that of his other art installations/projects. supercodex is also inter-related with Ikeda’s new long-term project “superposition” since 2012 that focuses on quantum information. It consists of performance piece (2 performers on stage) and forthcoming installation works in the future. The new live set of supercodex will be premiered in Tokyo in November 2013 and will be toured internationally after then.

Second output on Eclipsemusic for the heavy rhythms dub duo Weight and Treble. In this vinyl debut Weight and Treble meets legendary Brooklyn hip hop artist Sensational. The 2×12′ EP takes off with Kickin’ it, a techno infected dub. Here the music is focused on a dark and deep bass and drum pulse buried in a cloudy synth soundscape in which Sensational crawls his way on a tripped-out flow. The B side opens with Bliss In The Mix (Ice Nice Riddim) a stripped down cut where rhythm and rhymes breathe into a weightlessness ambience made of shadows of sounds and vinyl static noises. Bliss In The Mix (Cash Path Riddim): same rhymes for another slower and more hip hop oriented rhythm where a percussive one note synth riff, off-beat skank and propulsive bass lead the nasty, rough Sensational’s flow; everything ends up in a concrete, electro-acustical mayhem. Tsembla is the musical work of Marja Johansson, a Swedish-Finnish
artist operating out of Turku, Finland. Utilizing a wide range of
instruments, electronics, objects and manipulated samples, the music
of Tsembla rides on waves of warped melodies, fluttering rhythms,
abstract voices and mutating textures, crossbreeding the known and the
imaginary.

Nouskaa henget (Spirits, rise!) is her third release, after the 7”
Tuplafiesta, released by Jan Anderzén’s Vauva label in 2009 and the LP
Fauna on the Finnish Ikuisuus label in 2011. Loosely assembled, rough
edged compositions, rich in details, come together into odd
instrumental miniatures in an almost-pop format, venturing into fourth
world territory from a clattering, wheezing and boiling DIY kitchen
inspired by Moondog, Ruth White, Raymond Roussel, LAFMS, Jon Hassell,
Anton Bruhin, René Daumal, Suzanne Ciani and folk musics of the Andes
and Asia. Two of the tracks on the album are made in collaboration
with flute wizard Antti Tolvi (of Rauhan Orkesteri, Lauhkeat Lampaat
etc.) layering up Tolvi’s overdubbed flutes with hand percussion, tape
snippets and electronics.

This 3LP Box-Set presented by the godfather of the genre of Dark Ambient/Industrial, B. Lustmord, putting into its focus the very early works recorded between 1980-83 including previously unreleased material and the very first Lustmord recording of all, in it’s primitive glory.

Lustmord’s intense and aggressive Live Performances in the early 80’s had been recognized by other Industrial Bands like Throbbing Gristle and SPK, the latter leading to a cooperation with Graeme Revell for many years including being a member of SPK and taking over their label Side Effects.

His outstanding skills as an artist and sound designer extended into several further collaborations with artists as such as Current 93, Nurse With Wound, Chris & Cosey, Robert Rich John Balance (Coil), Melvins and Tool, and since the early 90’s gams, television and over forty Hollywood movies like The Crow and Underworld.

LP1 is a remastered version of Lustmord’s first and very sought after LP release on Nocturnal Emissions’ Sterile Records.

LP2 delivers en early version of a track from the first LP plus intense live recordings from 1981.

LP3 provides several unreleased recordings from 1980-83, including one with John Balance, plus compilation tracks from various Cassette Culture labels of that period including Third Mind’s “Rising from the Red Sand”.

London electronic producer Actress has announced a new album, Ghettoville. The triple-LP release is out January 28 via Werkdiscs/Ninja Tune. That’s the cover art, above.

Ghettoville follows 2012’s R.I.P., but according to a press release, it’s really the sequel to Actress’ 2008 debut, Hazyville, “sharing a similar rugged style.” Hazyville will get a remastered vinyl release as part of the Ghettoville box set edition, which also includes a 32-page art book.

The Ghettoville press release includes a statement suggesting this may be the final Actress album. “Ghettoville is the bleached out and black tinted conclusion of the Actress image,” it reads. “A fix is no longer a release, it’s a brittle curse. Zero satisfaction, no teeth, pseudo artists running rampant, but the path continues.
