The story of Chris Douglas has a few holes in it. He’s been making music since the late ’80s, with his first record appearing in 1992. Since then he’s released and performed under names like O.S.T., Harry Rod, Wooli Bodin and Scald Rougish. We know he’s lived in Detroit and has worked with Mike Banks and the late James Stinson, and that he threw ambient techno parties as a teenager in San Francisco. These days, he lives in Berlin. Interviews with him aren’t exactly illuminating. All we’ve really got to go on is the music.

Niaiw Ot Vile is Douglas’s fourth release as Dalglish, and it’s a world unto itself. Just look at the title, or try to pronounce it. Track names like “Ciaradh” and “Oidhche” are Scots Gaelic, while “Noscriu” seems to pop up in Catalan, French and Italian texts. Urban Dictionary tells me “Sclunt” has a very aggressive meaning (you could even say demeaning), while “Donsfe” seems to have no meaning at all. As with Autechre or Aphex Twin, the words used to title these pieces of abstract music are themselves abstract. Non-words that sound like real words, mash-ups of half-forgotten languages, phonetic spelling, dropped vowels—it all challenges any straight-forward interpretation, pulling instead on instinct and memory without forcing any conclusion.

The tracks on Niaiw Ot Vile embody the same idea. Musically, they all fall into one of two loose camps. On one hand, you’ve got the dissonant, more rhythmically adventurous tracks (“Venpin,” “Noscriu”), where layers of noisy percussion coalesce into overwhelming wholes. Others, like “Set Nuin” and “Oidhche,” are far more minimal and ambient, floating along like Eleh or Stars Of The Lid. “Ciaradh,” which arrives half way through the album, sees both sides meet in the middle to beautiful effect. On all of them, Douglas leaves his stamp, a particular type of chord progression that he’s repeatedly drawn to, sometimes covered over by frantic percussion or synthesiser bleeps, sometimes left to stand alone, delicate and exposed.

It seems foolish to draw any kind of conclusion about an album as self-consciously open-ended as this. In a way, it’s like the aural equivalent of Ad Reinhart’s black “ultimate” paintings—a purely aesthetic exercise, shorn of all subject matter. We have no choice but to take it as we find it.

Ricardo Donoso – One Verse Sharpens Another

a3724289427_10

Label: Digitalis
Catalog#: digiv062
Release date: 24-10-2013
Source: WEB
Format: MP3
Quality: 320 kbps
Size: 60 mb
Genre: Electronic
Style: Experimental, Electronic

Over the past five years, Ricardo Donoso has continually sharpened his vision and craft into a diamond point. Beginning with Progress Chance then into Assimilating the Shadow, and now As Iron Sharpens Iron, One Verse Sharpens Another, Donoso has pushed further and further into grid-like, trance-infused tracks. This new offering simultaneously closes the cycle Progress Chance began with perfection, and blows the possibilities for the future wide open. Split over two parts, As Iron Sharpens Iron, One Verse Sharpens Another is a treatise on duality and Donoso’s strongest statement to date.

Pressed on separate 45 RPM 12″ records, this album most heavily embraces the dancefloor undercurrents that past efforts only hinted at. Donoso’s ability to juggle multiple rhythms and plot them all together cohesively is in top form. As his darkest work to date, it’s hard to still consider this ‘morning music’ even if vague similarities still exist. With each subsequent album, he has further explored connections between the external and internal self. Ideas shrouded in shadow on the first two records finally become poignantly clear. In the end, everything here is uniquely his own.

Opener “Affirmation” creates the link to Assimilating the Shadow while still pulling the listener deeper into the darkened pyramid that Iron/Verse occupies. Donoso’s composition and production techniques have grown immensely since Progress Chance, and the pacing over the course of these 12″s is impeccable. Bleeding into “The Sphinx,” the focus is further dialed in. As the geometry that’s graced the covers of each album has become more acute, so has the music contained therein. “Diagonal Environment” is a nonstop pummeling of heady bass sequences and subtle leads while the “The Old Straight Track” mixes elements of blackened dub and burnt-out goa into something new and addictive. It’s as if Donoso is continually rubbing off the dullness and ambiguity of past efforts to create something sharper and more refined.

Ricardo Donoso has led listeners on an incredible journey through the sunkissed, post-rave morning in Rio through the black shadows of the pysche. With As Iron Sharpens Iron, One Verse Sharpens Another that entrancement ends. Next time the limits will be destroyed.

Tracklist:
1. The Redeemer (07:15)
2. Open Drawer, Full of Masks (05:50)
3. The Child Primitive (07:16)
4. The Master Game (06:18)

Alvin’s use of the Shofar in experimental music making goes as far back as 1988, and this long awaited release features several compositions for Shofar and electronics, ranging from meditative Ambient environments to flamboyant, fast moving collage.

3. The Temptations of St. Anthony

Three pieces of magic and religious mysticism performed by a new generation of musical masters! Written as a companion piece to “Walpurgisnacht” (2004), “All Hallows’ Eve” is a tour de force in three movements for string trio—satanic counterpoint for the Witches’ Sabbath. Written as a gift to the ICE ensemble, Zorn wrote “The Tempest” as a musical reading of Shakespeare’s mystical and enigmatic last play. Finally, the virtuosic Chicago-based Fifth House Ensemble performs Zorn’s mini piano concerto in the form of a philosophical dialogue between St. Anthony and his tormentors.

Secret Boyfriend is the solo project of North Carolina’s Ryan Martin, who is also one half of Boyzone (not that Boyzone, unfortunately) and founder of the Hot Releases label – a catholic endeavour that has seen him release records from the cream of the contemporary N.C. underground as well as reissuing classic sides by the likes of Maurizio Bianchi, Ghedalia Tazartes and Ashrae Fax.

To date, Secret Boyfriend’s presence has been felt largely in the shape of live performances and short-run cassette releases (including Carved At Birth, Furnishing The Void and Skin On The Clock), as well as vinyl splits with Russian Tsarlag and Horaflora. This Is Always Where You’ve Lived is SB’s first LP release and unquestionably his most potent, fully realised work to date.

Twelve songs from under the floorboards: a heart-rending but hard-edged synthesis of downer folk, tape experiments, noise etudes and basement-mildewed pop for edgeland fuck-ups, loners and wanderers; recommended if you like Peter Jeffries, Flaming Tunes, Storm Bugs, etc. Arguably comes closer than any previous BEB release to articulating the “mesmerised suburban daydreams of our youth”.

Pulse Emitter – Crater Lake

With an array of handmade modular and vintage keyboard synthesizers Daryl Groetsch crafts melodic and layered compositions that evoke microscopic and interstellar landscapes inspired by nature, science fiction and the cosmos. Groetsch has been working under the Pulse Emitter monicker since 2002, composing and recording in his Portland, OR home studio. Writer David Keenan has called Pulse Emitter “the undisputed king of planetary scale synth hypnosis” and has said, “no one is making synth music that feels so organic, so rapturous and so ‘in tune’ with the contours of outer and inner space as Groetsch.”

Inspiration for Crater Lake came from a spiritually moving camping trip Groetsch took to Crater Lake National Park in Oregon where he found it to be one of the most stunningly beautiful places he had ever been. At the time he was conceptualizing an album inspired by the moons of Jupiter and Saturn and noticing similarities between the features of Crater Lake and the moons caused Groetsch to create an album influenced by both the nature in front of him and the cosmos above.

On Crater Lake Groetsch delivers his most intricately composed pieces yet by experimenting with melody and pattern synchronization. Groetsch’s working method begins with conceptualizing each piece and then composing on paper, MIDI sequencing the tracks, synth programming, and finally recording and mixing.

Album opener “Europa” was inspired by the clear blue water of Crater Lake and also relates to the icy surface of the moon Europa that is believed to have an ocean of water underneath it. The album’s second track “lo” is about Crater Lake’s ominous and harsh rock outcropping as well as the volcanic forces taking place underneath Crater Lake and the volcanoes covering the moon lo.

Hubble – Hubble Eagle

artworks-000061542988-xf77vi-t500x500

Artist: Hubble
Title Of Album: Hubble Eagle
Year Of Release: oct 2013
Label: NNA Tapes
Genre: Experimental, Psychedelic, Electronic
Quality: MP3
Bitrate: 320 kbps
Total Time: 00:39:41
Total Size: 91 mb

Tracklist:
1. Hubble – A Star Or Two Beside [21:12]
2. Hubble – A Long Way From Home [05:13]
3. Hubble – Hubble Eagle [13:08]

*Former Zs man Ben Greenberg with a mesmerising, sense scrambling slice of intricate electro-acoustic deconstructions** “On “Hubble Eagle” we hear Greenberg launching his guitar mantra even further into uncharted territory. Opening with the side-long “A Star Or Two Beside”, Hubble trades in his trusted electric and opts for acoustic guitar, which when subjected to Greenberg’s turbulent tapping chops, yields incredible and unexpected sonic results. Complex percussive patterns begin to emerge, creating a raw rhythmic backbone for a constantly shifting vortex of overtones and harmonic weavings. These dulcimer-like pluckings ping-pong back and forth across a vast stereo field, creating a whirlwind effect that sweeps over the listener like river rapids; bubbling, rushing, chaotic, and endlessly flowing. After some immersion, the barrage of notes can start to feel automated or even electronic, until brief pauses and subtle flourishes break the hypnotic spell, reminding the listener of the human nature of this music. Side B opens with the breaking of more new ground on the track “A Long Way From Home” originally by The Kinks, Hubble’s first cover song. Inspired by Greenberg’s rigorous touring schedule on the open road, Hubble meditates on the feelings of isolation and melancholy set forth in the original song. By deconstructing the riffs and rebuilding them in the Hubble framework, the track turns into an electro-acoustic hybrid that is entirely new in sound, employing alternate tunings and adding vocals for the first time in the project’s history. The result opens new harmonic gateways for the notes to flow through a psych-rock atmosphere. Closing off with the title track “Hubble Eagle”, Hubble is in it’s truest form with a powerful electric guitar exercise. The playing is mechanical in its relentless repetition, creating guitar fractals that seem to crystallize around themselves like the formation of a galaxy… Greenberg successfully reminds us of the importance of hand-played music and the human touch in a time when electronics and circuitry along seem to prevail. Enhanced by the record’s flow from acoustic into electric sound, the result of “Hubble Eagle” is a truly unique modern guitar album.”

Torus – Feeel

Artist: Torus
Title Of Album: Feeel

Total Time: 00:35:42
Total Size: 86 mb

Having launched our record label with his debut EP, the work of the young Dutch producer Torus, aka Joeri Woudstra, is something that’s understandably quite close to our heart. He’s someone we’ve fully grown alongside and his second EP proper, Feeel, follows March’s name-your-price Yard Sale EP in introducing a bit more of a club ready edge into his music – though he proves to still be as pensive and delicate as ever on tracks like ‘Backyard’, ‘Feeel’ and ‘Untitled’.

“To me this EP is an in-depth exploration into the sound that had emerged from the Torus EP,” Woudstra offers of the project. “I’d been trying to get as much contrast as possible between the first and the last song without losing the idea of the EP as a whole.”

“When I make music I like to work with a feeling or a vibe rather than scoring a specific moment I’ve experienced in life,” he continues. “Basically, I’d been trying to turn these vibes into songs using mostly self-made sounds so that they’d become as personal as possible. The songs are really just translations from emotion to sound – which is also the reason for the title – I felt like I could really expose myself through these songs.”
