Love is elusive; you can feel it, but you can’t touch the emotion, at least not in a physical way. Love is shy to show her face, preferring to stay out of sight for long periods. Her heavenly presence, guarded against the eyesight so as to be unseen, ensures that you can’t reach out a hand and embrace the emotion, but you can still feel the heat when she is there, surrounding all of you while lighting the match that will set your heart on fire. Like music, like romance, love can heal, change a heart and change a life; the touch of a loved one is found in an arc of a thousand smiles. In this vale of tears, sensual kisses are left to sustain, lovingly left lingering, staying a little longer on the skin in her long reaches of delay and reverb. Love is here.

Bluhm are a dream couple, comprising of Tim Diagram and vocalist Genoveva. A shared love for music has brought them together; one passion, one devotion. In The Vale Of Tears is the outcome, finding itself on the very pretty Fluid Audio. And it isn’t just pretty music, it’s gorgeous. Atmospherically alive, the music looks through rose-coloured windows onto what could be Heaven itself. Lyrically sure, Genoveva’s voice is a sweet perfume, a playful fragrance that caresses the ambient layers with a beautiful vocal freedom; the same kind of freedom found in love.

Opener “The Mirror Of My Soul” soars immediately away, her soulful, soaring voice a kiss in the breeze, arriving at Oriental-influenced tones that echo outwards. Her voice then splashes softly into pools of lighter tones, like rose petals floating in romantic, scented waters as bubbles drift through the air. In The Vale Of Tears will drape a loving arm around your shoulder, consoling you with the potential of renewal, encouraging you forward and extracting any strand of prolonged melancholia as if it were a protruding thorn continuing to wound the flesh and the spirit. “Eventide” longs to let go, to be set free, sent into the light with the heart-felt words “release me” tugging at the sky. Hope can be found in the lucid atmosphere, which successfully avoids any dark clouds that may try to approach and upset the positive vibe.

You can’t have a little rainbow without a little rain; Bluhm understand that experiences shape us, be they negative or positive. Learning takes place, we develop, strengthen, carry on. In The Vale Of Tears charts the flip side, too – but only to show us how hope is formed. Bluhm are opening their hands as well as their hearts – upsetting times can make us appreciate what we have, and this appreciation burns the fuel that enables us to endure the dark, when the satiated smiles vanish and the tears fill valleys.

In The Vale Of Tears flutters on the winds of rejuvenation. Everything flows together; the music is a fountain, gushing clear, clean waters of radiant optimism and liberty. At points, the ambient breeze feels tropical in tonality; the cute, chirpy birdsong instills an even deeper sense of peace, respite and renewal. “As You Smiled And Passed Me By” still returns to a disappearance, a period when you fell in love, and love retreated. She is here now, haunting the backstreets of melancholic thoughts. The music always returns to healthy gardens, a sanctuary for lost valentines injured on battlefields. The music doesn’t think twice about the past. She can forgive it, but she also knows she will never forget it. Bluhm take the unsteady, brave steps forward, and instead of ruminating over love’s existence, they have chosen to believe.

In The Vale Of Tears is both lucid and absorbing. The music doesn’t so much wash over you as it does soak your skin with some lush ambient imagery. In The Vale Of Tears is romantic music that returns once again to the optimistic promise of life, love and the chance for renewal; for hope, when you thought it had faded, lit by the fire of love, lit by a new dawn.

Molly Berg & Stephen Vitiello – Between You and the Shapes You Take

Between You And The Shapes You Take is the second collaborative album by Richmond based musician/sound artists Stephen Vitiello and Molly Berg. As with the duo’s previous release, The Gorilla Variations (12k2013, 2009), tracks are created out of improvisations and sculpted through editing. Molly Berg’s clarinet and vocalizations tend to cover the CD’s lyrical content while Vitiello’s guitar and processing covers a good deal of the textures. Two of the tracks on the CD feature violin by the multi-talented Hahn Rowe, once a member of the group Hugo Largo.

There’s an immediate air of melancholy and longing to a number of the tracks. An initial demo recording for the album was remarked on by a listener who said “I’ve fallen face first into a machine that erases the memories of an ended relationship as if it were a sound instead of a real life that fell in love with the girl again in the end.” A strange amount of truth exists in that statement and the entirety of it was momentarily considered as the album title. Instead, Between You And The Shapes You Take is a borrowed quote from Wallace Stevens’ poem The Blue Guitar.

As for the recording process, Vitiello writes: “Things tend to go best when Molly and I don’t speak beforehand or plan anything for the recording beyond a time to meet and to begin. We’ll play for as long as we can and generally find that the beginnings and endings are implied in the performance. Where the last album was recorded in my office at school with all of our equipment balanced precariously on my desk, this one was in a proper studio. It allowed for more isolation and let us take advantage of quieter instruments such as the acoustic guitar and Molly’s slide whistles and found pieces of percussion.” The final track on the CD is the only one that was recorded separately. It’s actually a re- construction of that fated recording that potentially contains the machine that erases memories.

Volor Flex – Sabo

a3965797859_10

Label: Dark Clover
Catalog#: DC011
Release date: 30-11-2013
Source: WEB, Album
Format: MP3
Quality: 320 kbps
Size: 218 mb
Genre: Electronic
Style: Future Garage, UK Garage, Bass, Experimental, Electronic

A master of lovelorn emotional surrender, Volor Flex brings his narrative to an end with Sabo, his fourth and last album under this alias. The reasons are only his to know, but Volor Flex certainly won’t be this producer’s final musical persona. Parts of Sabo already hint at subtle changes in direction and style – natural consequences of artistically perfecting oneself – showcasing even more of Volor’s expert manipulation of samples and composer skills.

Volor Flex’s reputation and popularity have been steadily on the rise for the past two years; he has released 3 albums and 3 EPs, all representative of what it means to brilliantly adapt the specifics of a signature style while living up to the staple sound itself. The man who has been referred to as Burial 2.0, Alex Frolov of Syktyvkar, Komi Republic, Russia delivers us a complete, 20-track long, intensely introspective album, possibly his finest work to date.

Sabo is laden with familiar bittersweet moods made of crisp, dancy garage breaks paired with artfully constructed soundscapes as fragile as glass that Volor peels back until they break apart and fade away. All twenty tracks enclose the darnkess of the boreal forest, the harshness of the tundra, the anxiousness of isolation, the solace of being lost in thought and the memories of a loved one. Volor Flex adds a new expanse to the timeless comfort area that he’s been building and has now completed, a place of relief and daydreaming the listener will repeatedly want to come back to.

‘Dolor takes solo flight on Technicolour following the acclaimed ‘DRUGS’ mixtape with his champion and spar, Lorn. ‘Misteria’ presents a confident and fully fledged sound absorbing and reframing elements of classic UK rave and ’90s techno with a slow/fast hip hop bounce and hi-tech electronic processing, glyding from the lush rave pads and neck-snap nod of ‘Our Number’ thru the bewitching, Tri Angle-esque roll of ‘Pull Me In’ and the skittish ether dream scapes of ‘It’s Sexy Outside’ to skudgy darkside hip hop lurch on ‘Misteria’ and Shadowhuntaz-style hip hop on ‘Classic Is Over’ with vocals from 18andcounting. Fans of Slugabed, Lorn, Vessel, Evian Christ should check this out.’

The story of Chris Douglas has a few holes in it. He’s been making music since the late ’80s, with his first record appearing in 1992. Since then he’s released and performed under names like O.S.T., Harry Rod, Wooli Bodin and Scald Rougish. We know he’s lived in Detroit and has worked with Mike Banks and the late James Stinson, and that he threw ambient techno parties as a teenager in San Francisco. These days, he lives in Berlin. Interviews with him aren’t exactly illuminating. All we’ve really got to go on is the music.

Niaiw Ot Vile is Douglas’s fourth release as Dalglish, and it’s a world unto itself. Just look at the title, or try to pronounce it. Track names like “Ciaradh” and “Oidhche” are Scots Gaelic, while “Noscriu” seems to pop up in Catalan, French and Italian texts. Urban Dictionary tells me “Sclunt” has a very aggressive meaning (you could even say demeaning), while “Donsfe” seems to have no meaning at all. As with Autechre or Aphex Twin, the words used to title these pieces of abstract music are themselves abstract. Non-words that sound like real words, mash-ups of half-forgotten languages, phonetic spelling, dropped vowels—it all challenges any straight-forward interpretation, pulling instead on instinct and memory without forcing any conclusion.

The tracks on Niaiw Ot Vile embody the same idea. Musically, they all fall into one of two loose camps. On one hand, you’ve got the dissonant, more rhythmically adventurous tracks (“Venpin,” “Noscriu”), where layers of noisy percussion coalesce into overwhelming wholes. Others, like “Set Nuin” and “Oidhche,” are far more minimal and ambient, floating along like Eleh or Stars Of The Lid. “Ciaradh,” which arrives half way through the album, sees both sides meet in the middle to beautiful effect. On all of them, Douglas leaves his stamp, a particular type of chord progression that he’s repeatedly drawn to, sometimes covered over by frantic percussion or synthesiser bleeps, sometimes left to stand alone, delicate and exposed.

It seems foolish to draw any kind of conclusion about an album as self-consciously open-ended as this. In a way, it’s like the aural equivalent of Ad Reinhart’s black “ultimate” paintings—a purely aesthetic exercise, shorn of all subject matter. We have no choice but to take it as we find it.

Ricardo Donoso – One Verse Sharpens Another

a3724289427_10

Label: Digitalis
Catalog#: digiv062
Release date: 24-10-2013
Source: WEB
Format: MP3
Quality: 320 kbps
Size: 60 mb
Genre: Electronic
Style: Experimental, Electronic

Over the past five years, Ricardo Donoso has continually sharpened his vision and craft into a diamond point. Beginning with Progress Chance then into Assimilating the Shadow, and now As Iron Sharpens Iron, One Verse Sharpens Another, Donoso has pushed further and further into grid-like, trance-infused tracks. This new offering simultaneously closes the cycle Progress Chance began with perfection, and blows the possibilities for the future wide open. Split over two parts, As Iron Sharpens Iron, One Verse Sharpens Another is a treatise on duality and Donoso’s strongest statement to date.

Pressed on separate 45 RPM 12″ records, this album most heavily embraces the dancefloor undercurrents that past efforts only hinted at. Donoso’s ability to juggle multiple rhythms and plot them all together cohesively is in top form. As his darkest work to date, it’s hard to still consider this ‘morning music’ even if vague similarities still exist. With each subsequent album, he has further explored connections between the external and internal self. Ideas shrouded in shadow on the first two records finally become poignantly clear. In the end, everything here is uniquely his own.

Opener “Affirmation” creates the link to Assimilating the Shadow while still pulling the listener deeper into the darkened pyramid that Iron/Verse occupies. Donoso’s composition and production techniques have grown immensely since Progress Chance, and the pacing over the course of these 12″s is impeccable. Bleeding into “The Sphinx,” the focus is further dialed in. As the geometry that’s graced the covers of each album has become more acute, so has the music contained therein. “Diagonal Environment” is a nonstop pummeling of heady bass sequences and subtle leads while the “The Old Straight Track” mixes elements of blackened dub and burnt-out goa into something new and addictive. It’s as if Donoso is continually rubbing off the dullness and ambiguity of past efforts to create something sharper and more refined.

Ricardo Donoso has led listeners on an incredible journey through the sunkissed, post-rave morning in Rio through the black shadows of the pysche. With As Iron Sharpens Iron, One Verse Sharpens Another that entrancement ends. Next time the limits will be destroyed.

Tracklist:
1. The Redeemer (07:15)
2. Open Drawer, Full of Masks (05:50)
3. The Child Primitive (07:16)
