KRTS’s often approach to music creation normally follows zero rules and boundaries of genres. This time, KRTS welds together influences of genres but, places them in a bubble of hard hitting Boom-Bap HipHop percussions, thumping bass-lines, and combines a melodramatic set of layered vocals sung by KRTS with rows of melodies that weave in and out creating various atmospheres within one song. HIGH JET’s debut EP is a concept release built around their two steadfastly creative tracks, ‘the chase’ and ‘slenderman’. Despite contrasting in genres and moods, they are coherent in design within the context of the release, which was put together similarly to a two film feature: a retrofuture 80s French cop movie and a dark, clever, contemporary horror film. Both tracks come with an addictive novelty value, possibly due to the sense of humor the Bucharest-based duo display through their musical and visual approach.

‘the chase’ is a lax car chase soundtrack with a vivid lead synth hinting at knockabout electronic pop, French electro-house and carefree nightdrives through Vice City. The track is somewhere between wailing and refreshing thanks to its nostalgic hook and alert chord changes.

Second in line is ViLLAGE’s first take on ‘the chase’, a parade of a track that marries the ear-catching fanfare with a sugary pinch of R&B, some hybridized footwork and ensnaring harmonic repetitions. ViLLAGE’s playful pop tinges, colorful synth samples, loose progession and contained drop from his first remix of ‘the chase’ also jut out into the bouncy, melodic house version of the track.

The mood immediately shifts from the washed-out, summery vignette to a much darker place with 3 levels of rawness that the listener has to tread through carefully, making use only of a glowstick with infinite light but a very short range. The relentless and hammering ‘slenderman’ with its maddening percussion, laughter and chants (one of them being the Romanian word for monster) is to obsess over for days, while its two remixes range from ARME’s sweltering UK garage bass to Kalli’s stomping warehouse techno, all three of them dancefloor hit material.

The chord-driven, modern take on an 80s film score alongside their fun nod to the first great myth of the web – the unsettling Slenderman – are sure to indulge a savvy, reference-loving audience. The EP comes with a DIY alt-humor video that has to do with cars, synesthetic flashbacks, absurdism and the 1980s.

Stepping up with his second album for 50 Weapons, Addison Groove is once again mining the rhythmic excitement of juke and footwork and working it into his blue-hued melodic headspace. Standout vocal cut ‘”Just You” is a prime example of the upbeat flavour across the album, while “11th” matches the plush harmonies with moodier switch-ups, and “The Spirit Level” drops the tempo into a house bump that lends itself to the illustrious synth sweeps. Typically though the beats are in that twitchy middle ground between dubstep and footwork, leaving plenty of space for razor-sharp constructions and dazzling edits as best demonstrated on the dynamic acid roll of “Space Apples”.

The first artist album on the Parisian label ClekClekBoom fittingly comes from French Fries. After debuting on the ‘French’ electro label YounGunZ Entertainment (alongside Bambounou) in 2010, Valentino Canzani Mora has remained central to ClekClekBoom since he co-founded the label back in 2011. The Kepler LP comes after a string of bass-heavy tracks and bootlegs, but there’s no denying this LP is the South American-born artist’s piece de resistance. At 13 tracks long, the album explores hissing cosmic ambience, experimental drum tracks, industrial bass-techno, broken beat rhythms, and some dubbier excursions on a classical tip. Special mention going to the album’s club-geared highlights “Bug Noticed” and “Change The Past”. Highly recommended.

The new dirtybird compilation is loaded with 11 great tunes I have been collecting for over 6 months. Most notably, the Shiba San “OKAY” record has absolutely been destroying every dance floor known to man. We have lots of big birds like Justin Martin, Catz ‘N Dogz & Justin Jay on this, plus a ton of great newcomers and friends making appearances.

The dirtybird BBQ was founded as a small get together in Golden Gate Park thirteen years ago. We’ve had the same core line-ups and even the same chef, Grillson, since the beginning. But three years ago, the free party in the park got too big and our permit was pulled. The city of San Francisco could no longer handle the amount of people showing up to the event.

Ever since then we have been trying to think of way to bring back the vibe of the BBQ park party. This year we finally put together a team that is able to take the BBQ party all across North America and Europe. We will be starting in Miami and ending in San Francisco so make sure to come grill and chill with us sometime this year. This compilation is a celebration of the O.G. dirtybird BBQ vibe.
