First surfacing a few years ago on Black Butter with the appropriately titled UK bass/jungle hybrid “Fyah”, Warrior One has become one of the emergent label’s most potent weapons. A debut on “Hypercolour’s little sister” Losing Suki is probably the veteran producer’s most high profile release as Warrior One and you sense it’s a good fit as soon as lead track “5ths” swing into focus. It’s been called a modern incarnation of “RIP Groove” by some blogs, and the classic 2 step vibes and powerful bassline is certainly reminiscent of that vintage jam though Warrior One melds it successfully with elements of classic US House. On the flip “NYC” is a wholehearted homage to the original house movement in the five boroughs with some truly killer keys, whilst “Only You” has the Warrior One edging back to a more UK-centric sound.

Arriving the same week as his return to the Clone Jack For Daze label, Night Slugs co-founder L-Vis 1990 drops this hotly anticipated 12″ for the White Label series. Centre stage is a VIP take on “Ballad 4D”, a highlight of last year’s Ballads EP from Connolly. Much of the layered production that made up the original has been discarded in favour of some expertly chopped Jungle style percussion and there’s a stop start progression to the track that will really mess with dancefloors. On the flip, Night Slugs’ go-to remixer of choice Helix provides his own bootleg of Ballads EP track “Not Mad”, which will please fans of the Atlanta-based producer’s own distinct brand of skeletal grime-techno hybrids.

The London producer broke onto the scene early last year with the Commotion EP, released through Dusk and Blackdown’s Keysound Recordings. Since then Wen, real name Owen Darby, has developed a strong affinity with the label. Heavily influenced by everyday life in the UK capital, the LP is littered with slang and pirate radio samples, laid atop Darby’s sparse grime frameworks.

“When I send out my responses it’s stamped with my identity,” says Darby. “The album was a way to show some progression through that identity. It has some calmer, emotive moments but moves into some energy and brightness, taking the temperature down to a darker place but ramping the urgency and tension up towards the end.”

The album features collaborations with Blackdown, Riko and Soundman Chronicles chief Parris, as well as a brief cameo from Wiley on “Nightcrawler (Devils Mix).” Signals lands as the latest in a string of full-lengths from Keysound, with Wen following the likes of Damu, E.M.M.A. and Logos.

*Edition of 300 copies pressed on coloured vinyl, mastered and cut by Matt Colton* With only one release to her name so far, the excellent “Orz” tape for the Reckno label, plus a regular show on NTS, the producer who may or not be a pseudonym for visual artist Jason Kerley returns here with her first release pressed to wax, a 30-minute odyssey that glides into the hardcore continuum and re-shapes various forms and formulations of electronic music along the way. “sssssssss” is a 30 minute trip split into two continuous sides that run like a mixtape, coming to life on the frazzled low-end modulation “Fingerbang”, through the fractured, minimized UKG overhaul “Swoon”, the delicate, micrsocopic electronics of “Sex Smell” and the growling mentasm Grime of “No Liquid”. We can’t think of many records we’ve had through our doors that borrow as much from the UK techno/Artificial Inteligence espoused by the likes of the early 90’s Likemind label as they do from the frequency fuckery of Evol and Playstation engineered Grime and Garage – but Skyler manages it effortlessly. The standout moment of the album comes with “Langwellig”, conjuring the spirit of early rave with the barest ingredients, lost in a haze of ferric smoke that feeds into the next transition on this forever-shifting trip…
