His ‘Cover Versions’ is an enchanting exercise in sampling/plunderphonic collage techniques, injecting frayed and dilapidated samples with new life in delicate and effervescent ecologies. I guess the title is meant to be taken on more than one level: at its literal meaning, the original source material is transformed into abstract versions of the songs they were born from, while on a physical, concrète level – one perhaps even more relevant to this album – these small fragments of sound feel ripped, scraped and extracted from their homes to make versions in the dub sense of the phrase, all decayed and dusty ghosts of shellac and vinyl displaced into a trans-dimensional digital/analogue ether. But while that might infer something darker, the sounds and the way they’re used implies a woozier, dreamier effect very close to Jan Jelinek’s recent Faitiche outings or the rarified recordings of Senufo Editions boss Giuseppe Ielasi’s Bellow recordings with Nicopla Ratti, gently blowing warm, human life into finely smashed particles of exotica, easy listening and library electronics.

“‘You Are Eternity’ is the third album to be released on Stroboscopic Artefacts and comes from two of the minds who have shaped the label since its earliest days: Dadub. Recorded over a period of two years, but containing fragments and ideas that stretch back a decade ‘You Are Eternity’ has been mixed together to form a continuous piece rather than twelve discreet tracks. The effect? An immersive journey that encompasses the descriptors brutal, ferocious, ambient and aqueous.

It would be easy to describe the album’s structure as that of two halves, but it’s not that simple. The structure that Dadub has developed is cyclical at its most compliant, and elliptical at its most oblique. Within these forms the sounds that emerge run the gamut of electronic music. ‘Existence’ and ‘Unbroken Continuity’ explore futuristic, atmospheric states. ‘Path’ swaggers with rippled dub. Embedded into ‘Truth’ is a polemic sample of Henry Waxman questioning Alan Greenspan. And the same record houses ‘Transfer’, a staunch cut that’s more than fortified to do some damage.

In the studio Dadub’s process is nothing short of alchemical. Their characteristic sound originates from entirely digital sources, but their sound treatments reanimate this raw material filling it with warmth and human emotion. The source loops and synthesised lines are run through countless channels and complex chains of effects to arrive at a destination unrecognisable from the points of origin. Dadub are true sound materialists.

Knowing that Dadub place so much emphasis on process, it’s all the more interesting to hear their collaborations with other artists and ‘You Are Eternity’ is graced by fellow SA cohort Edit Select, the sound experimenter Øe and Ninja Tunes stalwart King Cannibal. It is indeed King Cannibal who teamed up for the album’s most ferocious cut ‘Transfer’. Whereas ‘Experience’ ft. Øe is a hazy slither of atmospherica. And the only straight kick of the entire record is to be found on the track with the most elusive subject matter, ‘Death’ ft. Edit Select, a collaborative elegy on the ultimate unknown. ‘You Are Eternity’ tends towards spaces that are undefined, that are unquantifiable – this album is a foray into Jenseits.

The album title hints at the almost spiritual origins of the album, Dadub’s search for music that goes further, that spreads away from the confines of the time and place in which we find ourselves, music that seeps into the cavern of the eternal. Tucked into ‘Vibration’, the very first track, is a sample of the Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti. He leans close and says: Music is a spiritual gift, and those who misuse it, die young. Beautiful Swimmer and Future Times boss Maximillion Dunbar drops an LP of silky house and utopian boogie on RVNG Intl.There’s a strong and unapologetic new age feel to things, most obviously on ‘Peeling An Orange In One Piece’ with its liquid crystal arpeggios and Peter Gabriel-patented tropical woodwind corralled by a crooked 4/4 rhythm, and the straight-up synth-drift piece ‘For Mozy’. ‘Loving The Drift’ is a highlight, coming over like a hybrid of Cousin Cockroach and David Casper; ‘Slave To The Vibe’ and the brilliant ‘Ice Room Graffiti’ exploit the grey area between Theo’s wonked beat experiments and the Burrell brothers’ low-slung Nu Groove sound; and ‘The Figurine (Nod Mix)’ is a barely disguised homage to the deep, opalescent house of Newworldaquarium. ‘Inca Tags’ drops the tempo and targets the low-riders, hip-hop gone hypnagogic, and ‘Loving The Drift’ – probably the best track on here – is the last word in New Age Outlaw melancholia. Oh, and of course the title track has been a fixture in clubs of late, its dewy string-pads and nicely off-centered rhythm hitting the L.I.E.S. and Juju & Jordash fans right where it hurts. Beautifully crafted, comprehensively funked and very, very trippy.

French duo Deep Forest has experimented with fusing electronic with lesser-known folk melodies from Africa, Brazil and even Japan in the past. With the vast diversity that abounds in India, it seems only fitting that the Grammy Award-winning world music band came looking here.

For their album Deep India, they collaborated with santoor player Rahul Sharma, who selected tunes from across India for the project. And the job was far from easy, given that every region in the country has its own rich legacy of folk music. “It was challenging because I had to be true to the title of the album and research on the best tunes we could take,” says Sharma. The album, out on Sony Music, features eight tracks based on folk tunes from Jammu, Assam, Gujarat among other regions, whose local music hasn’t been explored much. “The album also features tribal tunes from Kerala, as well as chants from Madikeri, Coorg. And there is also a catchy Bihu melody, apart from a folk song from Maharashtra that features dhols,” says Sharma.

Eric Mouquet of Deep Forest adds, “I have tried to put all my music background together. I believe we could make many albums on the music from India. This is Deep India season one. Maybe we could also have season two.” Sharma adds, “Working on this album was very different. Deep Forest has a great following, and to work with Eric was very enriching. Plus, unlike my other collaborations in the past, the santoor isn’t in the forefront in these songs; the folk music from India is.”

Sharma and Mouquet are also looking forward to performing in Bengaluru on December 13. “I have come to India once before, in 1996, but never performed here. My musicians are very excited to play in India,” says Mouquet.

The album is based on a theatre production of Tolstoy’s War and Peace by German director Sebastian Hartmann. Hartmann asked the producer, real name Sascha Ring, to contribute to the project commissioned by German arts festival Ruhrfestspiele in Recklinghausen. After agreeing to take on the album, Ring spent a month in an abandoned factory building rehearsing with a 30-piece ensemble. Apparat live band members Philipp Timm and Christoph Hartmann were also involved in the production. Although the music wasn’t initially intended for a proper release, Ring, Hartmann and Timm took the album into the studio after the final performance. Ring said: “In the studio the material got another twist, became a real piece of music. I took the recordings with me, wherever I was—at home, at a hotel room, in an airplane, and straightened it up.”

The most recent Apparat LP was 2011’s The Devil’s Walk, also released on Mute, the venerable UK label helmed by Daniel Miller. Ring revealed details of the new album today on his Facebook page. He said: “It’s the first record ever that didn’t hurt at some point. It’s full of imperfection because it was made by humans.” He goes on to describe the record as “a bit of a weird record with not many beats and lots of drones.”

Off is not only the culmination of Markus Mehr’s trilogy, but it may also be the culmination of his career’s work thus far. The single-track album begins in silence, as a thrumming loop gradually emerges.
