Delano Smith has been an integral part of Detroit’s musical landscape for nigh on 30 years, but it’s only recently that the producer has begun to explore the album format. Back in 2012, Smith released the debut album An Odyssey for Sushitech which was a fine representation of the Detroit-via-Chicago producer’s contribution to techno pretty much since its birth. His relationship with Yossi Amoyal’s label has only strengthened in the ensuing period, and its little surprise to see that the Sushitech boss has coaxed a second album out of Smith. Entitled Twilight, the eleven track album will please fans of the Mixmode Recordings boss no end, mixing smooth, hypnotic deep house and snappy techno with just the right amount of basement soul and melodic complexity.

The instantly palatable grime and garage of DJ Q has been satisfying bassline lovers for many a year, not least with his appearances on Local Talk. Now Shollen Quarshie follows up on the mixtape showcase he did for Unknown To The Unknown with a full length album proper, and its packed full of the plush production and catchy hooks you would expect. There’s a whiff of techno about the dreamy synths that open the album, not least with the spiralling notes that hover over the trap-rave stylings of “Two Faced”, but elsewhere there’s a wholesome dose of sugar-coated jungle with the pop vocal stylings of Kassandra and Louise Williams. It’s a diverse album with a broad appeal to those who like their beats immediate and colourful, and might just be one of the unlikeliest pop albums of the year.

LP release from Szare with a bonus foldout poster and CD for the full album plus bonus tracks** Szare provide one of the most fully-realised and substantial releases in the Frozen Border catalogue yet with a heavyweight 6 track LP and 13 track CD included free inside the package. The set opens with the quasi-electroid ‘Weird Sister’ that recalls Carl Finlow at his best, albeit with a low-end emphasis, while ‘Swarm’ offsets brilliantly produced afro-tinged percussion with a crisp, clipped production style. ‘Meet You’ deploys straighter Tech-templates with elongated, detuned synths that provide a more Technofied variant to the filthy mis-shaped House exemplified by the likes of Kassem Mosse and Levon Vincent, before ‘Belt of Rule’ and ‘Leaden Sky’ return to more afro-centric rhythms, the former brilliantly sounding like a more brooding variant of Artwork’s classic ‘Red’, all suffocated swing and shuffle. The set ends with ‘Knives of Sina’, perhaps the straightest track on offer, falling in line with the Redshape school of layered techno precision engineered for maximal dancefloor impact.
