Alessio Natalizia of Walls spools out the 3rd and final Not Waving cassette, loaded with 8 tracks, 30 minutes of wistful tape loops and burbling machine noise with an eerie, proto-technoid edge. ‘Voices III’ yields a shady spectrum of hushed, pulsing electronic dialect neatly complementing the diversity of the first two volumes. Each cut says its piece succinctly, from the scrambled radiophonic transmission of ‘Excesses’ to the settling synth sediments of ‘Voices’ via the slow-blooming arpeggios of ‘Witzelsucht’ and the waltzing drum machine figures of ‘Body-Image’ or its radiant inversion ‘Disembodied’. The beauty of this series partly lies in the fact the music could have been created at any point over the last 30 years; it’s timelessly intangible and spectral, a place out of space-and-time, futuristic yet instinctively primitive.

Ever eclectic electronic outlet Hell Yeah is back with another carefully curated release this winter, and it’s a brand new and debut LP by Telespazio, a solo project by Italian DJ and producer Fabrizio Mammarella of Slow Motion’s fame.

This is a project that has been in discussion for years, ever since label boss Marco fell in love with Fabrizio’s deep digging and far ranging mix series, Telespazio, which dates back to 2007. “I think he’s one of the best Italian DJs of the new generation,” says Marco. “I’ve been impressed since 2009 when he did a compilation mix for the label entitled Hell Yeah Disco Cabinet.”

For almost a decade now Fabrizio’s Slow Motion brand – both as a label and event – has been at the forefront of disco, future retro sounds and grooves. Fabrizio himself is also one third of Clap Rules and releases music on labels like Bear Funk, DFA, Kitsune, Tiny Sticks and across the course of eight tracks here he showcases a wide range of electronic sounds.

Opening up the expansive LP is Barrier, a go-slow bit of intergalactic funk with bleepy melodies and steppy synths, whirring cosmic sounds and colour to spare.

In Motion then plays with grubby, dishevelled kicks and claps, spangled synths and curious patterns that are all underpinned by monstrous bass.

Nuvolari is another bit of deep space delightfulness with blistered synths, circling shape ships and glowing, pixelated chords all loosely tied to a chugging disco beat. *

Devices* is a beatless bit of glassy ambient that conveys a real sense of motion from this world to the next and that moody sense of soundtracking continues into the second half of the album with the expansive, twinkling Glide Shot, skyward synths and harmonic chords of Rays and broken disco grooves of LFO Ride. Closer Unstable then gets all trippy and otherworldly with dark undertones, kinetic synths and snippets of vocal.

Overall this is a truly unique and idiosyncratic journey into a freaky sound world that comes wholly from deep inside the mid of Fabrizio Mammarella.

Given the soul-soaked and generally far-sighted nature of techno veteran Fabrice Lig’s music, it’s unsurprising to see him popping up on Carl Craig’s esteemed Planet E label. Galactic Soul Odyssey more than lives up to its title, too, largely eschewing dancefloor techno rhythms in favour of tracks that bristle with the positivity of P-funk, boogie, broken beat and high class synth-pop (think rubbery slap bass, kaleidoscopic synths, ’80s soul vocals and bouncy rhythms). It’s a deliciously positive set, all told, with just the right balance between studied retro-futurism and effortlessly melodious atmosphere. Certainly, it’s something of a triumph – an accessible romp with enough musical depth to please even the choosiest of heads.

Joining Recycled Plastics’ expanding roster is Andre Zufall, better known to many of you as Mon0. Having released several excellent albums on Kreislauf, Test Tube, Silent Season and Sublime Porte, he has spent quite some time refining his own special brand of deep ambient drones and rhythmic pulsing techno.

Monophon is possibly Recycled Plastics’ deepest release yet, in terms of complete disconnected minimalist techno – longform tracks filled with dark passages of drones and rumbling low end, which eventually give way to womblike rhythms and organic percussive elements that build up like a storm cloud. Mon0 is a master of hypnotizing you with frequency alone, before gradually lifting up the curtain and revealing the alien machinery he’s built to receive and capture the raw slow breath of the cosmos.

Steffie Doms was a DJ long before she was a producer. You can tell: her tracks are almost exclusively streamlined for club play. They also sound just like the kind of records she plays out—old, analogue and a bit dusty. As formulaic as it can be, her flair for hooks makes her best music great (“Yours” is essentially a modern house classic), even if the rest of the equation is left wanting. Doms’ drum programming is typically dead simple, and her tunes keep static, robotically going over the same motifs without much in the way of development or tension. These are chronic issues that come to the fore on Power Of Anonymity, a record that highlights its author’s limitations as much as it does her gifts.

Doms says she tried to make her second album a more personal one, incorporating ideas from the electro and IDM she loves and often plays (her recent Essential Mix is full of it). It’s an appealing thought, but also an exaggeration—these influences rarely surface in any identifiable way. Only “Bang For Your Buck,” with its flattened snares, nervy chord progression and little curls of synth (right out of the Drexciya playbook), has an electro edge. The rest of Power Of Anonymity has the same faded-photograph ambience that defined Yours & Mine. It makes the tasteful reverb on “Everyday Objects” all the more appealing, and gives the slow-burning title track a beautiful melancholy shared by another Steffi career highlight, “Sadness.”

But retro analogue loveliness is all you get on Power Of Anonymity—the album stubbornly refuses to step outside its comfort zone. “Bag Of Crystals” might be an attempt at a banging techno centrepiece, but its chimes and crashes feel muted and distant. “Selfhood,” meanwhile, is just Doms is twiddling her thumbs, yet another track made from gentle chord progressions and draping disco strings. The problem comes down to songwriting: these tunes are ultra-gridded to the point where it feels like nothing happens over the course of six minutes, even if those six minutes are made up of inviting, sit-by-the-fire deep house and techno.

The Virginia and Dexter collab “Treasure Seeking” is the LP’s sterling exception. A goofy vocal track, it has a certain hustle the rest of the album, groomed and careful as it is, seems uninterested in. Instead, Power Of Anonymity merely repeats the ideas first laid out on Yours & Mine, sometimes improved yet other times untouched. A playful electronic musical journey evocative of Brian Eno’s ‘Music For Films’, Oneohtrix Point Never, 8-bit soundtracks and prog-infused 70s synth epics and executed with a rigorous conceptual framework worthy of John Cage or the radical film experiments of Lars Von Trier. ‘Solarispellis’ is the follow up to Arandel’s 2010 debut album ‘In D’ and similarly continues to be entirely in his signature key (a nod to minimalist godfather Terry Riley). From woozy electronica to emotive techno and the most vertiginous Krautrock, the tempos, moods and subjects are intertwined, covering an array of musical territories despite the uniformity of the tonic note and chord. There is a paradox to the intricate beauty of ‘Solarispellis’; an almost symphonic album recorded in the living room of a small apartment. The sounds suggest harpsichord, piano, organ or drops of water on a hot tin roof although almost every sound you hear was synthesized. There’s a scholarly approach to the music but it does not require any effort on the audience’s part.
