Balance Problems is the sophomore release from yMusic — a group of six New York City instrumentalists (Rob Moose, CJ Camerieri, Clarice Jensen, Alex Sopp, Hideaki Aomori, and Nadia Sirota) flourishing in the overlap between the pop and classical worlds. The much-anticipated follow-up to 2011’s Beautiful Mechanical (Time Out New York’s #1 Classical Record of the Year) features stunning new compositions from Nico Muhly, Sufjan Stevens, Andrew Norman, Mark Dancigers, Jeremy Turner, Marcos Balter, and Timo Andres, all realized through the ensemble’s striking performances. The album was produced by Son Lux.

Since their inception in 2008, yMusic has sought to bring a classical chamber music aesthetic to venues outside the traditional concert hall. Their unique configuration (string trio, flute, clarinet, and trumpet) has attracted the attention of high profile collaborators-from Dirty Projectors to My Brightest Diamond-and more recently inspired an expanding repertoire of original works by some of today’s foremost composers. With this new release, world-class composition and peerless performances share the center-stage, as the group continues to develop their own intense, nuanced style around a host of new works.

Balance Problems operates in a different realm than traditional chamber music. The album’s intricate sonic landscape is heavily impacted by genre-defying luminary Son Lux, who, after composing the title track to the group’s debut, was brought on as producer and mixing engineer for Balance Problems. With his diverse background in electronic and experimental music, Lott helped push the project to new heights: the limits of the ensemble’s six acoustic instruments are expanded to create a sonic tapestry of enormous depth and subtlety, all while maintaining the integrity of the musicians’ original performances. What results is a sweeping, full-bodied listen that will entice fans of indie rock, baroque pop, and classical music alike.

yMusic’s members have toured and recorded with top artists across genre lines such as Bon Iver, Paul Simon, Bjork, The National, Meredith Monk, Antony & the Johnsons, David Byrne, The New York Philharmonic, and Sufjan Stevens.

It’s been three years since husband-and-wife team Jus’ Ed and Jenifa Mayanja released their collaborative debut album, Let’s Groove. Since then, both have been busy with solo projects, delivering a large volume of releases in their distinctive warm, melodious and loose deep house style. Love It Or Leave It, then, is something of a rare treat for those who dig their wholeheartedly positive and spontaneous take on deep house. It’s perhaps a little breezier than either producer’s solo work, with less immersive pads (though they are present, particularly on the chiming “Love Bubbles Change”). It’s still deep, though, with cascading melodies, picturesque chords and occasional soul-flecked vocals riding a range of deep, sinewy house grooves.

Alex Barck’s rise to world wide fame was as a member of Jazzanova in the late 90’s. After releasing his amazing debut “Diamond Days” on Traum and the follow up “Nothingness EP” Egokind told us he had the idea for an album already sitting in the back of his head.
To be able to convert all of his ideas he asked his long time friend and collaborator Ozean to work with him.
The album shows that Egokind and Ozean both draw ideas from multiple genres resulting in eccentric club tracks, interludes which are based on improvisation and composition and mesmerizing downbeat trax.
Nevertheless Egokind & Ozean’s long player feels personal rather than patchwork and a lot is due to their individual approach of not paying attention to establishing formulas but to develop their own.
The whole album does not feature one synth sound instead all is recorded and transformed using: Guitar, Rhodes, Piano and manipulated voice.

Egokind and Ozean are trained musicians who play in bands and study at the school of arts in Berlin. The idea for the album was to come up with a composition which is harmonic and can be played also on the piano itself.
Although both of them like melancholic and dark music as they state it was their intention to create a “friendly album” which is capable of embracing the listener and the clubber.
For their album they both say Terry Riley was one big influence.
Egokind and Ozean have been working together for years, but have not released much as a duo. One of their first tracks produced together (“Sinus”) was released on Traum in February 2014 , you can find the track as one of the two bonus tracks on this album.

The Berlin based duo keeps a low profile, reflective of both their refusal to attach themselves to any linear narrative of what it means to be an artist in the digital age and a vast talent for creating their own language and sound design.
With their music Egokind & Ozean show a new generation of listeners and clubbers how to embody music without having to know the rules. In a way they give you permission to discover music.
The album starts with “Mega” a track which illustrates their approach to touch many grounds resulting in something gigantic. The track itself begins rather acoustic inviting you to the private world of Egokind & Ozean, before it becomes a joyous balearic tune that despite its wealth keeps slight dissonances coming and going. …More

After appearing on Planet Mu last year alongside Ital as Interplanetary Prophets, Jamal Moss is back on the long-standing electronica label with a new release that gives him full free rein to head into his most cosmic, wild styles without reproach. From the off it’s clear there won’t be any holding back as “The Seer Of Cosmic Visions” finds delirious arpeggios of glassy synths meeting with creative washes of distortion, but it’s not all overdriven naughtiness as “Space Is The Place” reveals with its playful and delicate chimes and tones. For the most of course this is abrasive and challenging material, utterly peerless in its inventiveness.

‘Faith In Strangers’ was written and produced between January 2013 and June 2014, and was edited and sequenced in late July this year. Making use of on an array of instruments, field recordings, found sounds and vocal treatments, it’s a largely analogue variant of hi-tech production styles arcing from the dissonant to the sublime. The first two tracks recorded during these early sessions bookend the release, the opener ‘Time Away’ featuring Euphonium played by Kim Holly Thorpe and last track ‘Missing’ a contribution by Stott’s occasional vocal collaborator Alison Skidmore who also appeared on 2012’s ‘Luxury Problems’. Between these two points ‘Faith In Strangers’ heads off from the sparse and infected ‘Violence’ to the broken, downcast pop of ‘On Oath’ and the motorik, driving melancholy of ‘Science & Industry’ – three vocal tracks built around that angular production style that imbues proceedings with both a pioneering spirit and a resonating sense of familiarity. Things take a sharp turn with ‘No Surrender’- a sparkling analogue jam making way for a tough, smudged rhythmic assault, while ‘How It Was’ refracts sweaty Warehouse signatures and ‘Damage’ finds the sweet spot between RZA’s classic ‘Ghost Dog’ and Terror Danjah at his most brutal. ‘Faith in Strangers’ is next and offers perhaps the most beautiful and open track here, its vocal hook and chiming melody bound to the rest of the album via the almost inaudible hum of Stott’s mixing desk. It provides a haze of warmth and nostalgia that ties the nine loose joints that make up the LP into the most memorable and oddly cohesive of Stott’s career to date, built and rendered in the spirit of those rare albums that straddle innovation and tradition through darkness and light.

Just in time for autumn, Fran invites us into club musics parallel world with the project Hamlet: aided by Oded K.dar (NÖRD / The Koletzkis) on the piano, she presents cover versions of beloved electronic classics such as Sky and Sand, Limit to your Love, Howling or Hypnotized on the fittingly titled album Piano. The initial idea came to the duo at a birthday party; the first baby steps followed the very next day. Surprised by the potential, the autodidactic singer Fran and the studied concert pianist Oded searched far and wide for the perfect grand piano, which they eventually found in the form of an old Steinway at the Greve Studio in Berlin. Thus, the drunken whim developed into fourteen beautiful covers over the course of numerous nightly recording sessions. Reduced to vocals and piano, Hamlet let the original tracks essence resound. One is able to hear the soul of the song, as the minimalistic rendition enables breathing space. Moderats Bad Kingdom or Kraftwerks Das Modell suddenly appear like honest black and white portraits. The words and melodies, embedded in the harmonies of the piano, are like the wrinkles and peculiarities of a face stripped of make-up, emerging in a hitherto unseen fashion. A new aesthetic is created through the reduction. Removed from the club, the songs on Piano are defined by their pure emotiveness sometimes of a euphoric, sometimes of a melancholic nature while they are also a nostalgic bridge to their original context. They seem like a vague memory of a late night; like the walk home in the quiet hour before dawn.

By the time Bonobo plays London’s legendary Alexandra Palace on 28th November 2014, the epic career-defining tour around his latest album The North Borders, the band will have travelled 180,000 miles, taken in 175 shows in 30 countries across 3 continents over 18 months in front of 2 million people.

This live album will be released in deluxe packaging with a CD, a 70 page hardback book of photographs and stories from members of the band, as well as a bonus DVD featuring glimpses of hi-speed photography. There will be standalone CD and 2LP edition too, it’s an exhaustive, beautifully captured record of the show.

The audio and video were recorded and filmed at The Roundhouse in London and in the incredible Pula Arena, a genuine Roman Amphitheatre. In addition, some of the tracks on CD are handpicked from breathtaking live radio sessions that happened whilst on tour. Packaged with the DVD will be moments of documentary footage filmed as the tour reached California.

After dropping several tracks and performing at select festivals throughout the years, Ólafur Arnalds and Janus Rasmussen dedicated the year 2014 to explore the area in-between Ólafur’s more acoustic, piano-based solo work and Janus’s synth-heavy electro pop, with their collaborative electronic project Kiasmos.

By focusing solely on their self-titled debut album, Ólafur and Janus have been able to combine and further develop their unique sound aesthetics to complete an album driven by their mutual love for electronic music. Made in Ólafur’s newly build studio in Reykjavík, Iceland, a majority of the album was recorded using acoustic instruments next to a variety of synthesisers, drum machines and tape delays. It features a live drummer, string quartet and Ólafur performing on the grand piano, producing an ambient, textured sound, which makes it a perfect home listen and equally danceable record. If you listen closely, you can spot them record the thumb piano, finger snapping and even the sound of the metal grinder of a lighter slowly to replace the usual electronic hi-hat sounds, giving the album a far more intimate and unique atmosphere.

“We decided to start almost completely over with this record, so most of the material is written this year with the idea of making a record that can stand as one piece rather than a collection of songs. I am very excited to get a proper record out exploring a different territory than I am used to. I touch a lot on electronic genres in my own music but never have the opportunity to go full out electronic like we do here.” – Ólafur Arnalds
