Manuel Anos has been one of the most consistent techno artists of the past decade, but in recent years has slowed down his output. As First Contact shows, this has led him to release more measured, introverted music. The release starts with the title track’s eerie ambience, like a soundtrack to a grey, dusky world. “Tension” sees Anos pick up the pace but not to the big room-conquering level of yore and he fixates on cold bleeps and grungy bass licks. “Odio” is more dance floor centred and could pass for Mike Parker in mid-tempo mode, while the release ends with the one true techno track – the purist Hood-influenced minimalism of “Stroke”.
