There is no doubt that Paul Birken is one of the most talented techno producers to emerge in the past decade. The US artist’s disdain for linear conformity and soulless grooves means that his music is always colourful and has a human touch. This is apparent on this collaboration with Milos Martinov aka LAG for Jerome Hill’s label. Both “Nemir” and “Bumer’ revolve around broken beats, dense drums and incessant vocal samples. On the former, the drums and cut-up rhythm swing close to classic hip-house, while the latter’s pitch-bent vocal is more ponderous and doom-laden. Birken also delivers a straighter, percussive take on “Bumer” for the techno DJs.
