Atkins’ and Von Oswald’s Borderland collaboration has yielded an album and a series of EPs – this latest release continues in much the same vein as previous releases. “Concave 1” sounds closer to the Basic Channel founder’s signature sound, with a dubby, scuffled groove providing the backdrop for hypnotic chords and steely hi hats. On the second version of “Concave”, it sounds like Atkins has taken over the reins. A similarly dubby rhythm prevails, but deep techno chords, acidic washes and a more linear focus steers the arrangement closer to Detroit than Berlin. Irrespective of who is in the driving seat this project is always an essential techno project.
