This release, as much as we’ve been waiting for it, is a little bit of a mystery. Perhaps, this is due to the label’s inherent ambiguity when it comes to its aliases and letting the press know about them. In all honesty, this adds to Atelier’s charm, the label run out of Berlin and one which surfaces on Hardwax’s page with a new release, from time to time. Adopo, one of the three artists featuring on this latest clusterbomb, has featured prominently on the imprint and has returned alongside the unknown Flexi and Blendi. Monikers and their identities aside, this is a fantastic EP form start to finish and could possibly even be the crowning jewel in the label’s run so far. Mixing up shreds of post-punk, techno and industrial, there just isn’t a ‘best track’ on here. Flexi’s “Track 1” sounds like a beefed-up instrumental of Cabaret Voltaire’s mid-eighties period, while Blendi’s “Track 2” is a grooving, improvisational techno sketch at high speed – a true beauty! On the flip, Adopo goes deeper and more lo-fi on both “Track 3” and “Track 4”, the latter of which, alongside Flexi’s opener, would sound absolutely immense on a big system. Warmly recommended, don’t miss it!

Tired of hearing the same ol songs? So is K-Def. From his House of Hits / Pirate Radio days (alongside the legendary Marley Marl), all the way through his current incarnation as a ‘producer’s producer,’ it is safe to assume that the New Jersey native knows a thing or two about records. Looking For The Perfect Break Volume 1 provides a look into K’s world, where new breaks and grooves are continuously being unearthed at a breakneck pace and ordinary sounds are run through K-Def’s mixboard and morphed into new sonic creations. Much like the Chief Rocka himself, this live, 1-take mixtape on wax does not stand still for too long before K changes the pace and introduces new sounds into the sequence.

This 12″ features over 40 minutes of high fidelity audio, seamlessly mixed (no drops or overdubs) and mastered by K-Def a frame-worthy cover/jacket designed by Joe Buck (widely known for his work with De La Soul).

Tim Engelhardt is back on PMP with a 4-track EP, following last years’ ‘All Eyes On You’, which was quite successful. He relies on his signature elements on this release: Emotive melodies, rich basslines, vibrant and fluffy percussion and elaborate atmospheres.
The title track ‘It Matters To Me’ starts with sounding pretty empty before the bassline kicks in and a bouncy string-loop arises, but continuously evolves to a summery breeze of jazzy rhodes licks, expressive strings, a tiny but effective filtered saw sequence and tender piano chords, which will aid the record to stay in your hearts forever. Next up is ‘The Kiss’, which is a beautiful mellow track, where you can really feel Tim’s passion for floating and emotive soundscapes. This track is just perfect for every sundown you will witness this year.
The b-side starts with the powerful ‘About A Moment’, a bass-heavy record which portrays just a situation, a moment the listener should witness too, that’s what this track is about.. fall into frenzy and feel for yourself.
Rounding up the release, he recorded the track ‘Teardrop’, whose swirling synth lines and heavy baselines are simply capturing and hypnotizing you, before you wake up in the break, which sounds a bit wistful and full of desire, just to get kicked back into the actual main theme of the record. A track to get lost in.
As a digital bonus, he made the track ‘Too Far From You’, that is a far slower gem than the other ones. It starts with unusual glitches and percussions, which, at least in the first seconds, don’t make any sense in relation the groove, but they adapt quite nice during the song, which has also got heavily edited vocals, sung by Philipp Ludwig.
All in all, a very artistic release with sense for the perfect groove, lush melodies and rich basses.
