Naoki Shinohara entered the SPM universe via “Earth Tones 3” along with Joey Anderson and Leonid Nevermind. Naoki’s music is understated but effective and highly narcotic. Like Dj Qu and Fred P, there’s a controlled restraint that leaves the listener yearning, but backed with a forward thinking, techno-minded aesthetic. These tracks are just so desirable! “Dimension” demonstrates this vibe perfectly, a subtle but highly infectious technoid motif repeating every 4 bars while suspended pads keep tension a permanent fixture throughout. “78” uses organic percussion juxtaposed against a futuristic, utopian backdrop glowing with an otherworldly presence. Again, subtlety is order of the day, with waves of stimulation rippling over the listener in ethereal, hard-to-pin-down form. “Nightfall” is beautiful, utilizing rich piano notes and a powerful bass along with natural, syncopated drum patterns, it’s a perfect early evening burner for the more forward-thinking dancefloors. Finally, main man Fred P executes a skillfully carved reshape of “Dimension”, upping the energy and the eyes-wide-shut euphoria through waves of cascading, flanging atmospheres. Great stuff.
