Running Back welcome a mysterious stranger to their table for their 51st (!) release, in the form of the Rayban wearing, tropical shirted Roy Comanchero. This smooth operator doesn’t do laptops, instead touring the pawn shops and thrift markets of the world in search of knackered Jomox drum machines and wonky Junos. “Lucid Memory” kicks the EP off in thrusting form, hitting that sweet spot between proto house and Italo again and again with its bubbling bassline and snapping drums. Roy tops that killer rhythm section with hair raising sequences and spacey pads as he moves the party from the beach bar to the moon room. “Pugs Life” takes a step away from proto-house and jumps straight into the high gloss camp of the Italo world. Driving basslines, high octane synths and some of those swirling fills Todd Terje likes to rock ensure the floor’s gonna be rocking all night. On the flip Roy takes us into Italian house territory with “The Delete Of Society”, a hypnotic groover that draws you into its world of tuned synth vox, rattling percussion and sparkling melodies. Already a hit with me and the Pigeon in the Piccadilly office, this one’s gonna work the Mancunian floors for the foreseeable. Roy brings the EP to a close with the coastal night drive of “New Horizon”, a cinematic and melodic synth workout worthy of the great Jan Hammer, which could bring a tear from a glass eye. Whoever he is, Roy Comanchero is one to watch!

Genius Of Time and Running Back seems like such a perfect fit you wonder why the Swedish duo haven’t graced Gerd Janson’s label before now. It might be because Alexander Berg and Nils Krough aren’t exactly the most prolific of duos when it comes to original material with only three EPs to their name since they inaugurated the Aniara project in such sublime fashion back in 2010. Fans of Genius of Time and John Talabot’s DJ Kicks mix have added reason to engage in some vociferous rejoicing as the former’s sublime offbeat number “Juno Jam” contribution to the latter release is centre stage on this 12″. In addition to the A Side bliss of that Berg and Krough slip in two more percussive numbers on the flip which Running Back quite rightly point out would make “Joe Claussell proud”

Given his love of twinkling melodies, warm electronics, new age chords and shuffling analogue house rhythms, Norwegian-in-Berlin Telephones seems a neat fit with Gerd Janson’s Running Back label. The Ocean Called EP certainly chimes with Janson’s love of picturesque deep house and glassy-eyed Scandolearica. There’s happily much to admire, from the chiming melodies and crystal clear textures of “Blaff” (which, incidentally, is accompanied by a great bonus rhythm track), to the glistening beauty of “Hot Destinations” and darting, life-affirming positivity of “Untitled (The Island)”. Of course, none of this will come as a surprise to those who’ve been watching his career blossom over recent years, but this is still particularly potent. Arguably, it’s his best release to date and features some fine art from Sex Tags DJ Fett Burger.

While Redshape certainly has a way with melody, his real skill is drum programming. Even his most metronomic techno productions are blessed with swing, shuffle and a percussive looseness that belies their thunderous heaviness. Further proof of his skill with drums can be found on Bonuz Beatz Volume 1, a quartet of stripped-back but surprisingly lively percussion tools guaranteed to ignite dancefloors. Each of the cuts, from the handclap-laden low-slung bounce of “Itz” and tech-jazz swing of “Finizh”, to the cowbell-laden vintage breakbeat-house goodness of “Dogz” and basement techno slammer “Zteel”, feels like an invitation to lose it out on the dancefloor. Making drum tracks this addictive is a skill, and Redshape is undoubtedly a master of the groove.
