Delsin’s considered re-issue and re-release arm follows up on EPs from Claro Intelecto and son.sine with a trip back to an early UK techno heyday. The man behind the two tracks getting attention is In Sync aka Lee Purkis, generally regarded as someone who played a key role in the development of house and techno in England not just because of his DJ sets – Purkis would travel to the US to buy records no one else had – but so too for his productions. A steady stream of them was released from 1992 onwards on Irdial Discs, Plink Plonk and Fortune8 and each one was to the furthermost of futuristic techno and deep, spacious house music. The re-issues presented here (‘Storm’ from a 1992 EP and ‘Subway Route’ alongside Pluto from 1993) have been fully licensed by Delsin from Irdial and have been transferred from the original master reel-to-reel tape for full authenticity. ‘Storm’ is an epic 12-minute plus track that travels to the furthest regions of out galaxy where warm solar winds breeze past, the sound of spaceships circles you and a pinging kick drums drive you along. The hi hats are feathery light and jazzy and curious little alien synth sounds draw you deeper into this still futuristic sounding world. On the flip, ‘Subway Route’ is a 17-minute house trip that’s lively and jazzy, airy and breezy and sounds like Boo Williams jamming with Carl Craig such is its hi tech sense of soul and seductive synth work. As ever this is a quality re-issue from Delsin that shines light on an often sadly overlooked producer and his truly pioneering discography.

Back in March 2003 Claro Intelecto announced his arrival in the electronic world with his Peace Of Mind EP on Ai Records. Now, a decade later, Delsin, the label on which he released his latest LP, is re-releasing it in all its glory. Across four perfectly formed tracks the EP proved Manchester’s Mark Stewart to have a fine grasp on techno, electro and dub, and that he was able to do his own unique things with each.

Arguably the most well known cut from the EP is ‘Peace of Mind (Electrosoul)’, a busy bit of chattery house-come-electro that is wired up with many zithering melody lines and Claro’s trademark lush strings. ‘Tone’ is then a much more frazzled and aggressive bit of techno with raw, slapping percussion, gurgling synth lines and plenty of dystopian electro vibes. ‘Contact’ then settles into a deep, dubby, spacious groove with airy hi hats and a delightful bassline and carries you along effortlessly, and final track ‘Signifier’ closes things out in beautifully serene style with ambient swirling pads, organic synths and a curious bassline that rises and falls like the tide. Seminal stuff that still fetches a high price on Discogs, it was the start of a remarkable career for Claro Intelecto.

It’s be a few years since his last EP, but this new track makes the wait worth while: ‘Stem Cell’ is a light-footed, harmonically enriched bit of house that has large opens spaces glowing golden white as paddy kicks keep busy below. A blissful but purposeful track, the final offering comes from sometime Ann Aimee producer Area Forty_One, who offers the dynamic and juddering bit of deep techno that is ‘Supervoid’.

Boris Bunnik has finished his third full-length album as Conforce. Entitled ‘Kinetic Image’, the ten-track album is to be released on Delsin in November following on from his standout offering, ‘Escapism’, back in 2011.

In the last few years, Dutchman Bunnik has established himself as one of the most prolific producers in many different sonic realms. From deep, stripped down explorations to raw and rugged techno via conceptual and cinematic sound design projects, he is a master craftsman who coaxes evocative sounds from both analogue and digital tools whether working as Versalife, Silent Harbour or any of his other monikers.

Kinetic Image, though, is the sound of Conforce producing without the dancefloor in mind. It’s the sound of him moving away from the past and into the present. The album has very much been designed to be heard in one sitting, as a complete experience that moves away from regimented 4/4 beats and into slower, more surreptitious tempos.

The result is an all consuming sonic journey of intriguing and inspiring sounds that range from full on cerebral excursions into vast open spaces that throb invitingly (Scientific Trajectory) to underwater daydreams that suspend you deep in an ocean as various mycobacterial details float by. There’s also more industrial sounding fair that depicts a desolate warehouse in perennial decay (Semantic Field) and mysterious echo chambers that spread out all around you as celestial light beams and haunting melodic ripples gently float by as per the excellent Temporary Reversals.

An aquatic vibe pervades – no doubt a side effect of recent projects under other monikers – and the title itself relates to the fact that Conforce wanted to make moving images and art that evolve and unfold like passing landscapes. He sure has done that, because Kinetic Images is like an imaginary soundtrack to the last days of Atlantis… it sucks you in, it churns you about and it makes for music that consumes your whole conscious and rewards it with very real sonic imagery.

As is always the case with this label, the album comes with bespoke artwork from Dutch designers Graphic Surgery who are inspired by “urban environments” and “experimental electronic music from the 1990’s”. Created using an analogue spray paint/stencil technique, each ‘box’ or ‘step’ is an original image on paper and gives rise to the aesthetic of minor failures. As such, the repetitive and monochromatic design they have come up with for Kinetic Images is both structured and architectural yet dynamic and fluid at the same time. Completed with crisp typography and luxurious amounts of negative space, it’s artwork as considered as the music it conceals.

Seventeen years after it’s first release, Delsin is soon to hit the landmark catalog number of 100. Truth is, taking into account choice re-issues and specials such as the recent house series, there have already been scores more than 100 releases. Nevertheless, in that time the Dutch label has become synonymous with a wide range of timeless sounds from house to techno to dub to electronica, nurturing and championing some of the most respect names in the scene.

To mark the occasion, the label is to release five new various artist EPs throughout the rest of the year. Besides a special collector’s box edition, all EPs will be offered separately. All fifteen tracks will also be compiled onto one CD.

“After many different life cycles, with this compilation I try a bit to go back to the core of Delsin, to showcase more soulful but still raw techno sounds from a selection of key artists who best represent the label,” says label boss Marsel Delsin. “The tracks are all individual offerings but are tied together with the common themes of the label, and as a compilation will paint a nice overall picture.”

The five EPs will contain tracks from newbies and old favourites alike, including Sawlin and Delta Funktionen, John Beltran and Conforce, Redshape and Herva, Ross 154 and Mike Dehnert and more. The first – like all of them – features three tracks, one each from Gerry Read, Unbroken Dub and Claro Intelecto.

Its Manchester’s Claro Intelecto who goes first with ‘Fighting The Blind Man’, a typically widescreen and atmospheric cut with rich but grainy pads, warm techno pulses underneath and plenty of expertly design synths gurgling in the foreground.

New school house hero Gerry Read then offers a typically rough jam, ‘Granny Bag’. A melange of sandy hits, smeared synths and hunched kick drums, it might be one of his deepest cuts yet before Siberian producer Unbroken Dub then layers warm pads on rolling, buried deep kick drums and has all sorts of analogue sci-fi lines racing across their face.

As has done Delsin itself over the years, this special series of releases looks to join the dots between the past, present and future of techno.
