Swarm Intelligence's first album for Ad Noiseam is the densest and most interesting piece of beat-driven industrial music that has been sent our way in the recent times. Drawing from a past in IDM and techno as well as his involvement in Berlin's current new noise scene, Swarm Intelligence marries here some of the heaviest basses around with an uncompromising level of distortion and astute beats. Heavy, enthralling, modern, dark: an impressive new step by a musician to watch (and listen to) very closely.
Dark, menacing, oppressive: Swarm Intelligence's first album appears at first as a monolithic work of aggressive distortion. But stopping there wouldn't do justice to this musician, whose début album is a carefully crafted ensemble. From the heavy bass-drums of the opening "False Flag" to the glitchy atmospheres of "Run Interference", Swarm Intelligence's album is at the meeting point of many genres, all of them torn and twisted into an over-driven and bleak new form.
The cliché goes that music moves in circle. It is interesting to hear with "Faction" (or the works of like-minded young noise artists with which Swarm Intelligence had shared the stage) a return to the heavy industrial noise of the early 2000s. A new generation of noise artists have emerged out of the techno, IDM and dubstep scene, producing a raw and uncompromising sound which takes some core elements from their original styles and mixes them with uncompromising, dark and heavy industrial sound. Swarm Intelligence lies right at the center of this new movement, alongside such acts as Oyaarss, Fausten, Dead Fader, Emptyset, or Ancient Methods. Each of them comes from a distinct genre, but all meet in a burgeoning, heavily distorted new take at the rhythmic noise fury of the early 2000's.
Drawing from his rich IDM and techno culture as well as his years of productions, both solo or together with his labelmate and long-time collaborator Monolog, Simon Hayes unveils with “Faction” is first full-length album, following releases on highly regarded digital labels such as Acroplane or Acre Recordings. This Irish musician, now relocated to Berlin and, as a sizable part of Ad Noiseam's roster there, is working for one of the world's leading music software company, takes us here on a trip which is at the same time massive, distorted and dark, but which is also obviously a highly musical and varied work. It is time to let waves of overdrive wash over us again. Sometimes club compatible, sometimes intended for the headphones, “Faction” is without a doubt one of the most interesting piece of beat-driven industrial music we have come across recently, and obviously a very enthralling swarm.
Machine Code – Samurai
Artist: Machine Code
Title Of Album: Samurai
Year Of Release: 2014
Label: Ad Noiseam / adn181
Genre: Drum & Bass
Quality: MP3
Bitrate: 320 kbps
Total Time: 01:01:44
Total Size: 161 mb
Tracklist:
01 It’s Time
02 Wires
03 Urban Drum (Featuring MC Coppa)
04 Gatling
05 Seraphic
06 Labyrinth (Featuring Balkansky)
07 Samurai
08 Red Nova
09 Headphone Eden
10 Mining
11 City Lights
12 Requiem (Remix by Huron)
Machinecode’s fourth full length album is the one in which Current Value and Dean Rodell let their creativity flow wild. Stylistically diverse, daring in its experiments and rich of their production expertise, this is an album which includes dancefloor-packing tracks but also goes further. “Samurai” is as much the product of technical mastery as it is a work of soulful beauty: crystal-clear drum’n’bass, deep low-frequencies, innovative beat-work and evocative soundscapes form a coherent whole of the kind which is too rare in this genre.“Samurai” is the fourth full-length album by Machinecode, the boundary-pushing project of Tim Elliot (Current Value) and Dean Rodell. Probably their more daring work to date, this album does not stick to the accepted rules of drum’n’bass, but takes instead their experiments several steps further. After two albums by their Underhill “super-band”, the two of them present today their first Machinecode release for Ad Noiseam.
Decades of production and concerts have made of the producers behind Machinecode some of the most acclaimed purveyors of forward-thinking (and forward-sounding) drum’n’bass. Their taste for innovation, demonstrated since their earliest EPs, was the key to their first album (“Environments”) and fully unfolds in “Samurai”. Machinecode’s most daring – some will say experimental – work is the one in which they allow their ideas to express themselves in the most personal way, something essential to Ad Noiseam.
The universally recognized common thread of all Machinecode tracks is their impressive, masterful production. This is proven again in “Samurai”: Current Value’s low frequencies dive deeper than ever (case in point being the aptly name “Headphone Eden”), whereas Dean Rodell’s knife-yielding beats take us for daring rides (“Gatling”). The duo steps out of the neuroid sound it helped create, opting for science-fiction-like sounscapes (“Wires”), dubstep tempos (“Labyrinth”, with Balkansky), bold back-flips (“It’s Time”), headbang-inducing guitar riffs (“Red Nova”) or the masterful vocals of MC Coppa (also a member of Underhill, this time featured on “Urban Drum”). Topping the whole thing is a remix by Huron, Berlin’s glichtronica best kept secret.
“Samurai” is what comes out when two highly experienced producers give free reign to their ideas without being bound by the limitations of a style. Heavy, original, evocative, driven, powerful, sexy, fresh, deep, fun, sharp, bold: there is a lot to discover in this album. We strongly encourage long and repeated headphone-listening sessions in the company of this futuristic, robotic samurai.

Following the larger-than-life “Silent Siren” and preceding a new album as a full-band, “Prologue” is an instrumental, introvert musical dialogue between Dean Rodell and Ivan Shopov. If both are known for their beat-driven music, Underhill’s new album is what they listen to and write when the time comes for calm moments and beauty. A melancholic and beautiful play of acoustic tones, dub atmospheres and electronic glitches, “Prologue” provides a welcome respite to an overdriven electronic scene and does so with subtlety and humanity. (Get this on CD / as a poster print with download code / as digital files)
Underhill’s debut, 2012’s “Silent Siren” album, was a larger-than-life work. Combining the musical talent of three producers (Dean Rodell, Cooh / Balkansky’s Ivan Shopov and Current Value’s Tim Elliot) and including the voices of Martina Astner and MC Coppa, often all on one track, was a major effort resulting in a full and lush sound.Just as “Silent Siren” was a surprise both in its line-up and its resulting seductive sound, “Prologue” is everything except what one could have expected. Instead of gathering the whole band again for days or weeks in the studio, Dean Rodell and Ivan Shopov chose to work together in a reduced setting. Recorded in the weeks preceding the 2013 edition of the Burn The Machine festival (and including a collaboration with the Bulgarian dark-ambient artist Mytrip on the title track), this new album is a intimate work, which sounds and feels as a concentrate of these two musicians’ take at dub, introvert music.
While Ivan Shopov and Dean Rodell are better known for their club-friendly drum’n’bass and dubstep (the first as Balkansky and Cooh, the later either solo or as part of Machine Code), they are no strangers to much calmer material. “Prologue” is the perfect example of their skills at long atmospheric tunes, dub-heavy ambiences and acoustic tones. An album clearly made for careful home-listening, far from the dancefloor or the concert stage, this new album is what these musicians listen to (and invite you to listen to) when the feet are tired and the brain needs beauty rather than beats.
Harmony and calm in an unassuming, perfectly crafted and compact album: Underhill’s second album is what the electronic scene desperately needs, and a “Prologue” in itself of more music to come.

Maturity and depth: with his second album, Mobthrow refines his very original mixture of beat-driven breaks and highly evocative atmospheres, enriching them with a subtle newfound palette. A very original work at the meeting point of the club and the sonic daydream, “Unfolded” sharpens Mobthrow’s vision and brings a modern twist on his impressive sound-design. This seductive and personal album is not only the confirmation that Mobthrow is a talented musician to be reckoned with, but also an author whose albums carry their own strong narrative. There are many side to “Unfolded”, and they all fit firmly and harmoniously together.
