Ryota O.P.P aka Ryota Arai is the latest signing to Meda Fury. A highly respected DJ, promoter and producer – Ryota is a lynchpin of Tokyo’s burgeoning disco / house scene, his comtemporaries include Cos/Mes, Kuniyuki, and KZA among others who mix eastern mysticism, jazz spirituality, rare cosmic disco and deeply musical / intricate house.

As Meda Fury founder / A&R Nick Williams explains ”You can trace the roots of their sound right back to the early 90’s when house music really took hold there and created seminal producers such as Soichi Terada, Satoshi Tomie and the Major Force collective.”

Williams met Ryota in a chance encounter on his first visit to London from his hometown of Tokyo in Japan, and was immediately struck by the latter’s self described “zero-gravity sound” – The ‘Future Life EP’ is named in tribute to his debut self-released album of the same title, and contains early versions of tracks from it – which Williams judged perfect for release on the imprint.

From the haunted discoid-stomp of ‘Zombie Boogie’ to the sparse, clipped jazz-inflected funk of ‘Rain Jazz’, to the caustic, spiralling pads and moody stabs of ‘Sweet Claim’ and beyond, it’s clear that this is utterly unique dance music with an intriguing balance of flavours at play – ‘Spirit house’? ‘dark balearica’? ‘mystic house’? we’ll leave it to your imagination.

To give Williams the final word: “My obsession for Meda Fury is to cover all various strains and mutations of house music. The slo chuggy cosmic side of house was something I wanted to get to – and along it came without warning. I didn’t even use a divining rod!”
