We’ve previously described Kalabrese as an “intriguing character”, a description fuelled, in part at least, via the loose and eccentric blends of electronic styles found on his impressive 2013 debut album. To kick off this return to Rumpelmusig, mighty tech-house sort Ripperton has been recruited to rework “Is This”. He predictably does a bang-up job, delivering a pleasingly hazy epic rich in hypnotic tech-house beats, wayward electronics, dubbed-out vocal snippets and atmospheric guitar lines. Having got the peak-time moves out of the way, Kalabrese returns to his eccentric, hard-to-pigeonhole ways on the dub-fuelled, loose-and-wonky deep house sweetness of “Rock Your Duby”. Similarly inclined closer “Bananeraeuber” is, if anything, even better, thanks in no small part to the producer’s trippy synths and impeccable electric piano work.
