While he has released on Gene on Earth’s Limousine Dream label, Eric OS (real name Eric Axelsson) has saved most of his music for the Space Trace outlet he established back in 2021. ‘Underworld’, an expansive six-track mini-album, is his most significant release since 2023 debut album ‘The Wandering Mind’. It’s a pleasingly diverse yet sonically coherent affair, with the Swedish producer applying his trademark ‘spacey’ sound to a variety of styles. Compare the stylishly dead-eyed Italo-disco throb of ‘Elusive’ (all 16-bit melodies, pulsating sequenced bass and effects-laden spoken word snippets), with the deep, dreamy and otherworldly downtempo breaks of ‘Underworld’, and the tech-tinged, acid-bass propelled house shuffle of ‘Stereophysical’. To emphasise his varied influences, closing cut ‘Cherry Red’ joins the dots between the Cure, jangly dream-pop and intergalactic electro-pop.
