Mr. Mitch’s Gobstopper Records is regarded as a melodic grime label, but Odeko’s EP is evidence of what happens when you strip out the grime and focus on the melodies. The soft pads of ‘Setsuko’ give way to a glossy lead and textures that are seriously reminiscent of Sakamoto ‘Forbidden Colours’. Restraint is the key word here – the approach is light, like carpets of fallen cherry blossom. ‘The Yumato Spring’ joins two disarmingly lovely melodies arm in arm, before being overwhelmed by fizzy sawtooth foams. ‘Tsundoku’ is all glassy tones and massive jet engine bass blast, before a jackhammer ending with tinkling music box melodies that threatens to turn into proto trance but fizzles out before it can get there.
