Bjrn Torwellens second Concept-EP The Gunslinger is released on Steil. Three tracks which are, in the broader sense, related to Stephen Kings novel The Gunslinger. After several releases on Nachtstrom and Driving Forces, Bjrn Torwellen produced a nine track album in cooperation with Virgil Enzinger released by i.cntr. just recently. The region around his hometown Cologne already considers him as one of the shooting stars of the Techno scene as well as the readers of the Partysan Magazine who voted him to be one of the best newcomers 2012. His sound is industrial, noisy, dark and hard. Yan Cook and Rene Walther will bring the Remixes, which both have already proven their insight for Techno on plenty of different releases during the last years.

Whilst mystery continues to cloak the artist Sawf, there’s nothing clandestine about the Greek’s bold and inventive take on techno that has been accruing on Perc Trax over the last few years. Pushing the label’s industrial founds to new and unexpected heights, records to date including a particularly versatile debut full length, ‘Flaws’ have seen funk infusions, disco undertones and gritty ambient interludes all nestled amidst a splay of low slung to full throttle and barefaced floor material one has come to expect from Ali Wells’ stable. After a pretty quiet year, marked by a solitary release for new label Modal Analysis entitled ‘Sand EP’, comes the first new work for M_Rec Ltd, “Skotos”, backed by remixes from modern Berlin bastions Milton Bradley and Henning Baer.

Once again looped vocal stabs take the lead in Sawf’s original version of “Skotos”, guiding us through plied atmospherics together with soft, seductive pulsework with unhurried poise over a charged nine-plus minutes to finish in shady inconclusiveness that leaves you begging for more. On the B-side Milton Bradley offers a toughened up and industrialised remix complete with cranky mechanical misdemeanours, while K209 partner Henning Baer patches the space between with rumbling basement bass, vocal overlays, dry hats and rough edges to round off the EP

Our next Watergate compilation is numbered with the myth-enshrouded 13 – a burden taken by our longstanding friend and resident Ruede Hagelstein. Simultaneously to his enrolment into our booking agency, he curated 25 tracks for our new CD. The collection contains known classics and new gems.
The mix starts off with a dreamy melancholic track by Prins Thomas and develops an enormous deepness, which is masterfully broken by technoid soulfunk. Mike Dunn’s Chicago-house-bomb “Phreaky MF” is mixed with the soulful Tone Of Arc anthem “Sound Sail” peaking with Shlomi Aber’s “Foolish Games”. One of the highlights is definitely Henrik Schwarz’s “Take Words In Return” remixed by Carl Craig! The original version from our Watergate-X compilation plus remix will be released on our label end of February.
Ruede himself contributes two exclusive tracks – “A.R.G.O.”, a collaboration between him and Emerson Todd and “Up The River”. Both tunes will be released with remixes by Marek Hemmann and Ian Pooley on Watergate Records. And he couldn’t have chosen a more beautiful outro than M83’s “Where The Boats Go”. Altogether Ruede Hagelstein composed a fantastic and light-footed mix, which will be available end of March. We will also release a vinyl with exclusive tracks and edits from this mix-CD. Enjoy!

The opening three tracks serve as an introduction to the dissolved identities of the triumvirate behind the Sandwell shroud as their originals and edits layer over in an eerie aural collage of shuddering ambiance and brittle percussion. The mix slowly ramps up track by track as we’re guided through the experimental noise of Boyd Rice back-to-back with Raime then snapped into the skittering percussion and post-punk mumbles of Regis’ edit of Ike Yard’s “Loss.” Mary Velo’s “Detune” ups the ante as swathes of sinister beats and decimated stabs rattle around JPLS’s “Basis” before lunging slowly into “Wedge” by Rrose which cloaks “Syväys” by Ø. Function’s “Modifier,” takes us down the rabbit hole once more before the malevolent, swirling euphoria of Carl Craig’s “Darkness” washes over it and on into Markus Suckut’s cavernous “Hunt.”

The sludgy atmospherics of Samuel Kerridge’s “Waiting For Love Part 1” bleed into Untold’s “Motion the Dance” before the unsettling noise-fuelled dissonance of Surgeon’s “As You Breathe Here Now” pulls back into Hardwax boss/ Basic Channel legend, Mark Ernestus’ “Mark Ernestus Meets BBC.” Plastikman’s Plasticine provides an early-morning acid injection before going for the jugular on the murky bass throb of Trevino’s “Uptight” and back into Regis’ VCMG remix from the very start of the mix. The final furlong of the mix draws in Factory Floor, James Ruskin, SS/S, Laurent Garnier before circumnavigating its way back to Function’s “Voiceprint” – an atmospheric coda which echoes the opening sequence, providing a refined symmetry to the whole ordeal.

With this mix, another genuine artefact has been added to the Sandwell legacy, a document of their skewed presence and existence, a treasure guaranteeing the kind of quality that electronic music compilations rarely achieve. In 1 hour 15 minutes, the pairing of Regis and Function succeed in presenting and executing some of the most potent flourishes in the Sandwell catalogue, distilling them into a coherent body of work that masterfully defines the current techno zeitgeist. Few contemporary producers have bettered the merciless techno blueprint laid down by this collective, and few ever will.
