There is little we know about Tunisian artist Mahdi Machfar. He, as yet, has not released many tracks, appearing on small independent labels from the UK and his native Tunisia. We received his demo under the pseudonym Hausick a few months back and fell for the originals found on this EP. Mahdi writes no bullshit deep House. His three originals are restrained and unpretentious. This music is meant to be mixed live, for selectors who specialize in long blends. This is about the girls and guys who remix live using turntables. The title track, Gospel, evokes Kung Fu movies and the “lonely traveller going from town to town” The speaker yells, “Learn how to spin!” A direct enough manifesto. Space Between Us and Empty Without You are both sparse and emotive. They are the kind of tracks that pull dual duty – they pound in a sweltering club and sound smooth and light as air at home. Empty Without You gets remixed by Audio Soul Project who teams up with saxophonist Jimmy Tripp. Jimmy played sax on ASP’s last full length album.

Alfonso León is a young dj and producer hailing from Santiago, Chile. His native hometown exposed him to a vibrant and exciting electronic scene early on, and he soon released his very first track on the Loveparade Chile 2005 cd under the pseudonym Skyfonik to enthusiastic reviews. Gigs and tours came right after, and no wonder he moved on very quickly to join the international roster of music makers and performers under the wing of Luciano and his Cadenza family. In 2012, Alfonso was welcomed on board Ibiza’s sensational “Luciano and Friends” for a weekly residency on the island’s hottest venue, Ushuaïa, and then he was invited to play at the swinging Cadenza Vagabundos parties. Appearances at Sankeys, Bubbles and Ibiza Global Radio followed shortly. Back in Chile, he took part in the first ever Vagabundos Party held at Mysteryland Festival. The spring of 2013 saw the young gun embark on a big European tour along with Luciano, Carl Craig and Dj Sneak to name a few. This ep on Memento Records sees him take his production skills to the next level. “Vinyl Compresòr”‘s soulful melodies and tribal percussions are matched by a deliciously funky and luscious bass line, until acid synth stabs open the way to a low-pitched, creepy, almost manic dark vocal that crawls along the groove. Fabrizio Maurizi’s unique taste resonates hugely in his remix: a computerised, robotic low frequency bounce underpins a loopy rework of the dreary vocal, bringing its more rhythmical and human elements to the fore, marrying them to the relentless beat. Outstanding works, both tracks.

Die Vögel is German for the birds, but those who’ve been following Pampa Records from the beginning know that this duo isn’t some Schlager tribute to that hippie folk band. Not counting last fall’s excellent remix for Dntel, it’s been nearly two full years since we’ve heard from Die Vögel. Is something afowl? Not to worry: Jakobus Durstewitz and Mense Reents still flock together and their new EP is ready to hatch, just in time for summer. And they’ve got quite an interesting guest with them this time… The Chicken begins with that familiar Pampa swagger, all clickety clackety in 3-D, and soon we hear the extended howl of some kind of beaked instrument, searing into your skull, as a looming voice dares you to try to look a chicken in the eye. Is that Vincent Price? No, it’s famed shoe-eating director Werner Herzog. (But yes, this release could prove itself to be no less than Die Vögel’s Thriller.) Further layers of this hypnotic laser cry enter and exit, beckoning the sunrise, but you, my friend, are captive to its trance for the entire nine minutes. After you pull the feathers out of your mouth from that existentialist affair, turn to page B for Mesmerize: This one is easier on the psyche, both majestic and gentle, with legato horns and strings massaging your mood. Neapolitan sherbet for open-airs and open ears. So there you have it, perhaps the definitive Pampa 12, bearing that dependable turkey logo, credited to Die Vögel, named after to the world’s most populous domesticated bird.
