Having tinkered quite brutally with These New Puritans’ Attack Music, and produced some truly beautiful, electronically affected euphoria in 2012’s Pray and S&G, Deco Child (aka south Londoner Alex Lloyd) is back. He’s spent his time since his last EPs developing a new, intimate feel to his music. It’s a startling turn, one which initially stupefies – as all positively charged, emotive music should – though once the astonishment is allowed to settle, what we’re left with is Lloyd’s most accomplished collection to date. It’s a brand new take on electronic music, embodied into a record that’s equal parts grace and guile.

Opener “Skinless Pt 1” plays off the subtle compositional simplicity of Nils Frahm’s Screws and the gentle dexterity of Sigur Rós, and the result is as plainly cinematic and softly orchestral as the haunting minimalism of Ninja Tune label mate Jason Swinscoe. A ghostly, piano-lead intro gives way to a thudding, minimal beat and plunging bass, before bowing to a sun-flecked crescendo and a trademark, heart-pumping blow-out of euphoric strings, electronics and vocals. There’s then “Heartbeats” – a silken palpitation fuelled by elegiac soundbites (“Sometimes my heart starts racing really fast,”) lightly placed upon arresting and languorous keys. The whole thing performed with a nimble ability picked up during the ‘Child’s upbringings in electronica.

“Skinless Pt 2” meanwhile, with its spectral hanging notes and sweeping grandeur, is arguably the EP’s doleful chef-d’œuvre, and is decorated with Ben Dodson’s wistful vocal. Like an aggrieved groan of a floating spectre, transfixed by the teary-eyed waltz of a once beloved seen only through the fogged globules of a dangling chandelier. As you can tell, this an artist with a vision very much his own. “The less you change, the harder it becomes,” the song grieves, before turning agitated; aggressive, even, around the four-minute mark, as frenzied sirens and acerbic breaks invade its innate tranquility. As schizophrenic as it is unequivocally stunning, vocally there are glimpses of Antony and glimmers of Patrick Watson located within this flittering, seraphic thing.

Having already garnered plays on Radio 1 and 6Music and cemented himself as a favourite of Lauren Laverne’s, this is a welcome return for Deco Child. This is a release teetering upon the meeting point of the worldly and the ethereal, the organic and the electronic, with the techniques of each seamlessly intermingled with one another. It’s the meeting of aged learning and a new and optimistic outlook; a meeting that’s irrefutably inspiring to the ear that decides to lend itself.

The Elektrik Karousel is the new album from The Focus Group, the alias of graphic designer and co-manager of Ghost Box records Julian House, and it’s the most sonically rich, enjoyable and psychedelic so far. It’s an evolution of the Cut-Up experiments of the earlier albums where House developed a musical style that mirrored his collaged design work.

On Elektrik Karousel House, with help in the studio from Broadcast, weaves his samples into a rich tapestry of electronics, fuzzed guitar and processed exotic instrumentation together with fractured skipping rhythms and submerged melodies.

Ranging from electronica to experimental, from minimal pop to state of the art song deconstruction, this first album of the transatlantic duo Fanatico will comprise a diverse selection of cover songs as well as new original material. Can you imagine Patti Smith and Led Zeppelin tracks with dance beats? You will after listening to Dancing Daze. Fanatico is a new project of DJ-producer Mathias Schaffhäuser and vocalist Jorge Socarrás from New York. The project came about when Mathias Schaffhäuser did a remix of a track from the Patrick Cowley and Jorge Socarrás vintage 70s album, Catholic, which was retro-released in 2009 by Macro Music, Berlin. The two men had never met, but Socarrás contacted Schaffhäuser to say how much he liked the remix. Schaffhäuser, who was an old fan of Socarrás 80s band, Indoor Life, replied suggesting that perhaps they might work together sometime. Through subsequent emails both expressed how theyd each been wanting to interpret some cover songs, eventually leading to Socarrás going to Köln in August 2010 and spending a week recording with Schaffhäuser in his studio. The two had remarkable chemistry from the start, working together as if they were longtime music partners. Indeed Socarrás felt that in Schaffhäusers envelope-pushing minimalism hed found a contemporary successor to his earlier collaborators.

Born in the small town Badhoevedorp, located just outside of Amsterdam, Roel came in touch with Traum in 2007 when he remixed Minilogues “The Leopard”. He has recently done a remix for Ryan Davis & Electric Rescue on Traum and a compilation track on “Tour De Traum V” which put him on the map as a skilful and serious recordings artist writing unique music. Saying that the track is already over and “Game Over” starts.A haunting sequence meets, small noise cascades and and sees an electrifying bassline take the lead in an exiting track to unfold.Wait a minute and you can hear a mesmerizing synth being dropped from out of the deepest corners of his soul.Roel twists sequences like Nathan Fake at his best and makes this track a big feast for the senses which you don’t want to end. The remix of “Game Over” by Mononoid and puts them on the map for electronic music again in a big way.Mononoid have created a separate track out of the samples resulting in a highly hypnotic piece of deep melodic techno entirely suited to the peak time dance floor. Mononoid have become masters in their own genre and this heady groove of theirs continues to roll and evolve right until the lights go out. Game over. “Next To The Neon Light” is no homage to Kraftwerk but a shiny piece of a broken beat epic, melodic, uplifting tune that at times wraps one in a cloak melancholy. This track has such a strong and sonic feeling that it makes your your skin crawl. “Sugar Rush” shows Roels other side, letting orchestral sounds collide with sequential tones foreshadowing a “mad world” full of traffic where there is still a place for lush melodies and peace.
